Assessment Methods
The following assessment methods are recommended:
• Self assessment requires the learner to perform a self-diagnosis on whether they consider
that they will be able to connect hardware peripherals. The attached self assessment guide is
to be completed by the learner. On completion of the self assessment the learner would then
progress to the first assessment event.
• The skills assessments require the learner to perform task that are identified in the Range
Statement. This may mean that learner can demonstrate their skill in any operating system,
Application programs, and hardware peripherals and so on. Use the Assessment Checklists
for each one of the assessments.
• Knowledge assessment will be in the form of written/oral short answer quiz used to gather
evidence of the learner’s ability to explain the requirements and concept of connecting
hardware peripherals. A decision as to when this assessment event is to be conducted should
be made in consultation with the learner prior to the commencement of any training. You may
decide that the learner completes each of the questions as they progress through the
assessment or upon completion of the assessment.

Evidence to be submitted
The following list identifies the sufficient evidence required for a judgement to be made on a
learner’s skills and knowledge to connect hardware peripherals
• Completed cover sheets
• Assessment Checklists (2)
• Confirmation of underpinning knowledge sheet/s

Case study I
People have been buying basic computer systems and then coming to your business to ask what
peripherals would be suitable for their use.
Use the internet to locate the sites of one or more suppliers of computer peripherals. It is preferable that
the suppliers be Australian, but not necessary.
From the site(s) you have found, select at least 8 items representing a range of peripheral devices, and
find the required information for each device. Type your findings into a Word document.
You should have ONE PAGE FOR EACH DEVICE, including
• name and model number
• type of device
• a picture
• price
• system requirements
• ports/connectors needed/supplied
• running costs and availability of parts and servicing
• as many technical details as possible (dimensions, capacity, weight, speed, protocols used, etc)
• Supplier name and EXACT URL of data used. (eg Supplier: Tektronix Corporation
www.tektronix.com.au)

Make sure that the device is currently available (ie no discontinued models).
Your finished document should be attractively presented, so that it could be printed out and used as a
"portfolio" to give to a prospective customer who is interested in buying peripherals for their system.
The customer should be able to use your portfolio to select appropriate peripherals to purchase for their
needs, and be confident that when the device arrives, it will work with their system.
Some devices that you may select from include: printer, scanner, modem, zip drive, CD-RW drive,
monitor, memory key, digital camera, video conference camera, data projector, TV tuner, tape backup,
video capture device. You are not limited to this list.

Case Study II

The Design Department of GE Electronics has ten old computers, two broken printers, and a number of
used printer cartridges that they don’t know what to do with. They’d like your advice on appropriate ways
they could dispose of this equipment.

As this will be an ongoing issue, can you create a policy document (on a company’s letter head) that
contains suggestions about how to responsibly dispose of unwanted computer equipment?

Make sure that you give tips on how you can recycle computers and their consumables. Also make sure
that the policy document contains occupational health and safety information.

Did the learner meet the following criteria? Yes No Assessor’s Comments
1.1 Identify client peripheral requirements and
confirm in accordance with organisational
standards.
1.2 Document client requirements and
peripherals needed in line with
organisational standards and report findings
to the appropriate person.
1.3 Verify client requirements with appropriate
person in line with organisational standards
and reporting procedures.
1.4 Take action to ensure client support
expectations are covered by vendor warranty
and support services.
2.1 Obtain peripherals under instruction from
appropriate person.
2.2 Enter peripherals into equipment inventory
according to organisational standards.
2.3 Validate that contents of delivered
components and physical contents match the
packing list and resolve discrepancies if
necessary.
2.4 Store peripherals according to
vendor/manual guidelines
3.1 Verify the timeframe for installation schedule
with the client.

Page 5 7/21/2011
3.2 Remove old peripherals if they are being y
replaced with minimal disruption to clients,
taking into account environmental
considerations and OH&S standards.
3.3 Connect new peripherals with minimum y
disruption to clients, taking into account
operating system procedures.
3.4 Configure the computer to accept the new y
peripherals.
3.5 Test hardware peripherals and confirm client y
satisfaction, pay particular attention to
possible impact on other systems and make
adjustments as required.

Case Study I

Prepare a quote for a customer who wants you to install a peripheral device on their computer at their
work. Include:
• The name and model number of the device
• The type of device, and its purpose (this quote will be reviewed by the customer's boss to ensure
that it is in line with organisational policy)
• Time requirements for the job (including how long their computer will be out of use during the
process)
• List of parts supplied with the device, and any others required
• How this device should be stored when not in use, or when being transported
• Steps required during the hardware installation (ensure OH&S procedures will be followed) - will
any existing peripherals need to be disconnected and/or replaced?
• Steps required in setting up software and drivers.
• Name the driver file that the device will use - Hint: to find this, use Device Manager on a
computer that already has the device installed
• How the device will be tested to ensure correct operation after installation
• How customer feedback and satisfaction will be ensured
• Where to find further information, including troubleshooting procedures
Some devices that you may select from include: printer, scanner, modem, zip drive, CD-RW drive,

monitor, memory key, digital camera, video conference camera, data projector, TV tuner, tape backup,
video capture device. You are not limited to this list.
Type your answers in an appropriately named Word document that is set out clearly and easy to
understand. Each point should be a separate heading in your document.
