Problema 1

Problem 5 (1/2)
• Suppose that you are running a power plant and your burner release a lost of
pollutants into the air. The flue gas has been analyzed to contain 5% SO2, 3%
NO2, 7%O2 and 15% CO2 by moles. The remainder was determined to be inert.
• Local regulations require that the emissions of SO2 be less than 200 ppm (by
moles) from your plant. They also require you to reduce NO2 emissions to less
than 50 ppm. You decide that the most economical method for control of these
for your plant is to utilize ammonia-based processes. The proposed system is as
follows.
– Put the flue gas through a denitrification system, into which (pure ammonia) is
pumped. The amount of ammonia pumped in is three times as much as would
theoretically be needed to use all of the NO2 in the flue gas

14
….Problem 5 (2/2)
– Allow it to react a specified amount of time
– Pump it into a desulfurization system. Nothing new is injected here, it just has
a different catalyst than the denitrification, and the substrates are at a
different temperature and pressure
• The reactions that occur are:
• 2NO2 +4NH3 + O2  3N2 + 6H2O
• H2O + 2NH3 + SO2  (NH4)2SO3
• If your plant makes 130 ft3/s of flue gas at 900 K and 2 atm, how must
ammonia do you need to purchase for each 8 hour shift?
• How much of it remains unused?
• Why do we want to have a significant amount of excess ammonia?

15
convirtiéndose completamente a CO2.

Recycling
• Recycling is the act of taking one stream in a process and reusing it in an earlier
part of the process rather than discarding it. It is used in a wide variety of
processes.
• Benefits:
– Let’s achieve a wider range of separations
– In combination with some sort of separation process can increase the overall
conversion of an equilibrium reaction
– By using recycle, it is possible to recover expensive catalysts and reagents
The lower the flowrate
you can achieve in the
concentrated or dilute The more dilute or
stream concentrated you want your
product to be

Problem 1
• To save energy, stack gas from a furnace is used to dry rice.
• What is the amount of recycle gas (in lbmol) per 100 lb of P if the
concentration of water in the gas stream entering the dryer is 5.20%

Stack gas, S (lbmol) Recycle, FR Wet gas, W (lbmol)

4.73% water 9.31% H2O

Problem 2
• Nitroglycerine, a widely used high explosive, when mixed with wood flour, is called
“dynamite”. It is made by mixing high-purity glycerine (99.9+% pure) with nitration
acid, which contains 50% percent H2SO4, 43% HNO3, and 7% water by weight.
The reaction is:
• 𝐶3 𝐻8 𝑂3 + 3𝐻𝑁𝑂3 + 𝐻2 𝑆𝑂4 → 𝐶3 𝐻5 𝑂3 (𝑁𝑂2 )3 +3𝐻2 𝑂 + 𝐻2 𝑆𝑂4
• The sulfuric acid does not take part in the reaction, but is present to “catch” the
water formed. Conversion of the glycerine in the nitrator is complete, and there
are no side reactions, so all of the glycerine fed to the nitrator forms
nitroglycerine, The mixed acid entering the nitrator (stream G) contains 20%
excess HNO3 to assure that all the glycerine reacts.
• After nitration, the mixture of nitroglycerine and spent acid (HNO3, H2SO4 and
H2O) goes to a separator (a settling tank). The nitroglycerine is insoluble in the
spent acid, and its density is less, so it rises to the top.
25
….Problem 2
• It is carefully drawn off as product stream P and send to to wash tanks for
purification. The spent acid is withdrawn from the bottom of the separator and
sent to an acid recovery tank, where the HNO3 and H2SO4 are separated. The
H2SO4-H2O mixture is stream Wm and is concentrated and sold for industrial
purposes. The recycle stream to the nitrator is a 70% w solution of HNO3, in
water. In the above diagram, product stream P is 96.50% nitroglycerine and
3.50% water by weight.
• If 1000 kg of glycerine/h are fed to the nitrator, how many kg/h of stream P
result?
• How many kg/h are in the recycle stream?
• How many kg of fresh feed, stream F, are fed per hour?
• How many kg/h is stream W?, determine the analysis in weight percent
