A tale of 2 cities.

It was the fastest sprint to the ATM outside their Ground floor apartment complex within minutes
of the announcement of demonization. My friend and his wife took turns in extracting the 100/- Re
notes withdrawing 400/- at a time. Minute by minute the people around the ATM was swelling
antagonising close to forcing open the door. Climbing the corporate ladder had trained him to leave
no loose ends and he left no 100/- Re notes in the ATM. In the wake of the spring in his step and
lightness in spirit lay the shattered hearts of dozens thronging the ATMs and another hundreds to
follow. He was the fastest finger first in KBC.

In another city nearby there was a guy who had resigned from his job only last week and his mind
was wandering around this magnanimous unforeseen event in the modern history of this nation.

He too had a privileged corporate account with high profile bank. He dredged up his 500/- and
1000/- and headed to the bank little knowing what is in store.

Lets go back to Mumbai. A small business with 7 delivery men at Bank street in South Mumbai
positions all his men and himself in all the banks around. Each strategizes on 2 banks. His workers
exchanged a cool 1.5 lacs worth of old currency. His wholesale business battling with a slow down
would plummet. He knew that this would go on for a few days. The new notes would fetch a
premium in the market. There were rumours that the new notes would fetch a premium in the
market yielding 30% on the first day. Ie. 70000/- new notes for every 100000/-.

He envied the influencial guy in group who liased 6 lacs for a paltry 5% with his liaisons with the
bank managers. These bank managers were catapulted in to ominous power.

The share of the thousands who queued up in the Banks and ATMs was passed on to a few
influential hoarders.

Meanwhile our city guy was expecting a red carpet welcome was sent back courteously as no cash
was available. As he made foray in to a nearby banks and ATMs he was astounded by the serpentine
queues. As a privileged customer of a bank with limited customers he got his 20000/- old currency
exchanged the next day. Little did he know that the effect of this shall deprive him of a new job for
months to come.

On his weekend visit to retired father, he came to know how a lot of high ranking govt employees
had hordes of cash to be bartered for new offering to the tune of 20%-30% returns.
