World Environment Day 2019 – “Air Pollution”

History of World Environment Day:-
World Environment Day (also called as WED) has been started celebrating as an annual event on every 5th of June
since 1973 in order to raise the global awareness about the importance of the healthy and green environment in the
human lives, to solve the environmental issues by implementing some positive environmental actions as well as to
make aware common public worldwide that everyone is responsible for saving his environment and not only somebody,
government or organizations working for it.
World Environment Day is the United Nations’ most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for
the protection of our environment. Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that focuses attention on
a particularly pressing environmental concern. Theme for this year is “Air Pollution”. This Year China is the global host
of 2019 World Environment Day which will take place on June 5, 2019

“Beat Air Pollution”, World Environment Day 2019 will urge

governments, industry, communities, and individuals to
improve air quality in cities and regions across the world by
putting in place solutions across a wide range of sectors.
Approximately 7 million people worldwide die prematurely each
year from air pollution, with about 4 million of these deaths
occurring in Asia-Pacific.
Air pollution occurs when harmful or excessive qualities of
substances including gases, particles, biological molecules and
smoke emitting from vehicles including trucks, jeeps, cars,
trains, airplanes cause immense amount of pollution. Sulfur
dioxide emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels like coal,
petroleum and other factory combustibles is one the major
cause of air pollution

Air Pollution facts:

 92 per cent of people worldwide do not breathe clean air
 Air pollution costs the global economy $5 trillion every year
in welfare costs
 Ground-level ozone pollution is expected to reduce staple
crop yields by 26 per cent by 2030

Few Tips to Beat Air Pollution:-

 Generate more plantation and avoid cutting trees.
 Convert energy generation to renewable energy than the
fossil and Cole energy.
 Invest in energy efficient power generation.
 Improve domestic, industry and municipal waste
management.
 Build better and affordable public transportation system,
define no vehicle zone to increase bicycle users.
 Create pedestrians cycle friendly network.
 Reduce agricultural waste incineration, forest fire and agro-
forestry activities.
