I. TITLE: IMPROVING READING FLUENCY

II. GENERAL OBJECTIVES

This study is aimed in solving Aiza’s case: her reading fluency.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

It specifically aimed in improving the reading fluency of Aiza’s and the possible

interventions and solutions to solve her case.

III. CHARACTER

Aiza, the subject of the study, is a 12-year-old Grade V pupil who studies and lives in a

lowland area in Barangay Puro, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

IV. INTRODUCTION

Reading is an essential skill which enables one to understand and convey messages to

another. Learning to read starts immediately at birth and first developed through emergent

literacy which occurs at home and continues formally at school with supervision of the

teacher.

Reading can be silent or oral depending upon the purpose of the reader. But for a teacher

to determine how effective the reader is, oral reading is better used.

There are various elements that cover effective reading and one of which is fluency: the

ability to read smoothly and accurately with speed appropriate for reader’s age or level.

In the conduct of the study regarding problems concerning reading, it came out that

majority of the respondents did not show fluency in reading and the one who read the

slowest among them was a 12-year-old grade five pupil of Puro Elementary School named

Aiza. Aiza manifested her reading problem as I let her read a fable entitled “The Wind and

the Sun” with the book Joy in Learning English 5, page 43. She read very slowly and stopped

at several times as she tried to mumble the word first before reading especially those which

are not so familiar for her.

Aiza is the only child of a 50 year old farmer and a 48 year old sari-sari store owner who

live in a lowland area of Puro, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

This case study was conducted not just primarily to solve Aiza’s case but as well to further

be included to the studies and researches conducted which are laid for those schools and

teachers who have the same case as Maria.

V. INITIAL DATABASE
Aiza is a member of a middle-class family in a lowland barangay of Puro, Caoayan, Ilocos

Sur. She lives with her parents, Edwin Rafal his father, and Leslie Rafal , her mother. Since

they live in a lowland area, their primary source of living is fishing and also owns and manages

a sari-sari store.

VI. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Aiza lives with a simple life in a rural area of Puro, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur. Their house is

surrounded with few neighbors. She often socializes with her relatives almost especially with

her cousins who are also their neighborhood. She may sometimes be seen playing with others

but most of the time she tends in watching television alone and surfs in social media

specifically Facebook. Within her class, she is very active and often recites.

VII. WHAT IS THE CASE ALL ABOUT

The case of Aiza is mainly concerned with her reading fluency. Base on the interview

made with her parents with regards to Aiza’s study habits, she seldom read books which could

help her supposed to be in improving her reading fluency, instead she has more of her time

in watching television and surfing internet.

VIII. CONCLUSION

Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions are drawn:
The researcher therefore concluded that (a) the cause of Aiza’s reading fluency case is

also base in her study habits; (b) that interviews and home visits are effective in determining

the existing problem of Aiza’s with regards to her reading fluency.

IX. RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings and conclusions, the following are therefore recommended:

1. Remedial reading if needed (by the teacher) which could help improve
her reading skills and fluency.
2. Proper orientation to the parents to limit Aiza in surfing internet and
giving more time of reading books or any other reading materials.
3. Monitor the progress of Aiza’s reading fluency.
