LESSON PLAN

KYRSTIN DEAN
CSN SUMMER 2018
EDU 214
Plants – A science unit

Concept/Topic To Teach:

 The topic being taught is plants.

General Goals:

 To teach students about the needs of plants, the parts of plants, and the life-cycle of a

plant.

Specific Objectives:

 Students will learn the importance of plants.

 Students will learn the needs and the parts of a plant.

 Students will learn how to care for a plant.

 Students will learn how the lifecycle of a plant works by planting their own lima beans.

o Students will see the importance of sunlight and water for a plant by recording

data from their groups two pots of lima beans.

Required Materials:

 Internet Access

 Computer

 S.M.A.R.T Board

 Science Journals

 12 potters

 36 lima beans

 Activity Sheets

 Pencils

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):

 The lesson will be led-in using a power point. Students will learn the importance of plants

and what they are through a power point before students are allowed to plant their own

plants and experiment. Students will be asked a series of questions throughout the power

point to ensure the teacher that they are listening and to see what they know prior to what

is about to be taught.

Step-By-Step Procedures:

 We will begin our lesson with a power point, which will include definitions/words

students will need to know, the lifecycle of a plant, and instructions for the students to

follow.

 Students will then work by themselves to complete a series of plant-related assignments.

These assignments include a labeling/coloring worksheet and an interactive term,

definition, and picture foldable.

 Students will next receive an individual 5-page scientific journal from their teacher they

will need to complete by the end of the assignment.

 Students will get into groups of 6 (groups are provided by the teacher). One students will

be in charge of getting 2 lima beans, and two small potters for their group from their

teacher.

 Students will work together to plant two lima beans (one lima bean in each potter) in

which the first plant will receive food, water, and sunlight and the second plant will not.

 Students will individually record the data from their groups plants.

 To finish this lesson, students will work together in their groups to complete a poster

where they will draw their plant and the factors that played into growing it.

Plan For Independent Practice:

 Students will individually complete two activities and a scientific journal provided by the

teacher.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):

 Students will work together to complete a drawing of their plants.

Assessment Based On Objectives:

 Students will be tested on the different parts of a plant.

Possible Connections To Other Subjects:

 Scientific Method

 Why plants are essential to human life

Student with special need:

 I have a student in my class who has a severe case of dyslexia. In order to make it easy

for him to understand the power point and the lesson being taught, I will print out a

version of the power point for him to use to follow along with and use as a reference and

then occasionally check in on him to see how he is following along and if instructions are

clear.
