CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Writing is a method of representing language in visual or tactile form. Its system uses sets

of symbols to represent the sounds of speech and may also have symbols for such things as

punctuation and numerals.

Writing is also a set of visible tactile signs used to represent units of language in a

systematic way, with the purpose of recording messages which can be retrieved by everyone who

knows the language in question and the rules by virtue of which its units are encoded in the

writing system. (Colmas,1999)

However, difficulty in writing has always been the concern for college students in

general. In some cases, students find it hard to even select or decide on what to right about due to

the factors that may cause writing difficulties. Such dilemma must be looked into to address

writing difficulties especially with college students.

College students must have the right amount of knowledge on writing because it is a

prime skill needed when writing a composition or in thesis writing. If a student has mastered the

skills of writing, it is likely for him or her to produce a composition or write that has good

quality. When writing a thesis for the purpose of getting a degree, the skill or talent in writing is

useful because if a student knows the ins and out of writing, he or she can easily explain the

chosen study in an elucidated matter with the use exact terms which can put a lot of weight to the

chosen topic.

3
Writing difficulties amongst college students must be addressed not only by the students

but also the professors and parents as well. This study presents ideas and practices that may be

useful to college students who has concern on writing matters and amongst those practice they

may be to choose what is more suitable to them.

Writing difficulties amongst college students also display some causes that must be taken

to consideration in the field of learning. Students should not be blamed for such deficiency,

sometimes the problem is also in the environment. The causes of writing difficulties in college

students and other intervening factors that affects the situation will be addressed by this study.

School is an arena of learning where individuals learn the skills that they are aiming for

and develop it so they can be productive individuals of the society. Perhaps an encouraging

motivation from an educational figure will have a big impact on the learning process of writing.

Words of wisdom and encouragement from professors may have a key role in unveiling the

solutions of writing difficulties amongst college students.

Furthermore, the study focuses on the tenets on how to overcome writing difficulties in

college students. It also propose ideas that may be useful to students, professors and parents

when it comes to addressing such matter.

4
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. Why is writing an important skill for college students?

2. What are the main causes of writing difficulties amongst college students?

3. How can professors motivate college students to write better?

4. How can college students overcome writing difficulties?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study may be beneficial to the following:

To students. The study states best practices and ideas that may be useful to students on

how they can overcome writing difficulties. It also give them options to select which practice is

suitable or convenient that could help them remedy writing matters.

handle or help students suffering from writing difficulties. It also presents some causes of

writing difficulties which can easily help professors diagnose reasons why students suffer from

such difficulty.

To all forms of learning institution. Schools, universities or other forms of learning

institution may benefit from the study because it might lead to the idea of facilitating

symposiums and seminar workshops to address writing difficulties and how to recuperate when

experiencing such situation.

5
To parents.Parents will learn how to motivate their sons and daughters on how to

become a better writer and that writing difficulties can be overcome if they focus on developing

the skill.

To aspiring writers. This study will be helpful to them because it will make them realize

that writing is complex and for it will never be perfected instantly.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF STUDY

This study is mainly focused on writing difficulties amongst college students, how to

address such concern and the role of professors, students and parents on addressing the issue. It

also dissects the causes of writing difficulties in college students or the drawbacks of writing.

CHAPTER 2

DISCUSSION

Importance of good writing skills in college students.College courses demands different kinds

of writing that employ a variety of strategies for different audiences. A typical college student

will be required to write variety of essays throughout his or her collegiate years. This essays and

assignments will cover a variety of goals and purposes that must written legibly for profound

understanding. Some of these essays and assignments are based on personal experience while

others require additional research and use of other resources. (1) If college students has mastered

the skill of writing, they would be able to create a well-crafted write up even on a short period of

time. Writing well means conveying thoughts, ideas and facts in simple and clear language.

(David B, 2009) The art of writing is not something that is officially taught in schools or

universities but it is essential to develop such skill in order to excel academically and

professionally. (2) Students with good writing abilities have an edge over others and they score

better than other students because they can effectively convey what they have learned in the

written communication. Good writing skills can be a ticket to better grades and greater academic

achievement. Critical writing is a part of college papers.(3) College students with good writing

skills can easily critique papers because they know how to analyze statement in the passage and

form an informed opinion from it. (4) Good writing is also useful in writing papers. Regardless

of the course a college student is pursuing, writing is always involved especially with research

papers and thesis. Writing a research paper requires grammatical arrangements, spelling,

8
accurate facts and information. (5) College students who have exceptional writing skills can

easily formulate sentence to explain the study with the use of proper grammar. Academic writing

trains college student to be analytical because they take in complex ideas, break them down,

explain and simplify it. Learning to go from the complex to the simple is incredibly useful skill

that could be apply in the coursework. The world is all about writing. The better an individual

write, the more likely he or she will succeed. A good quality of writing is a required skill once

students entered college because of the many advantages and opportunities it provides. Indeed, a

good writing skill is a ticket to success for college students. (6) Students with good skill in

writing can easily find career of their choice because of their versatility in written discourse and

the possibilities of career advancement is also very high. 2.

Addressing college students writing difficulties. It’s no wonder that many college students find

writing to be a baffling exercise and have a little sense of how to break the ice when starting to

write college papers.(1) Writing regularly is a technique that can help college students overcome

writing difficulties. Short daily assignments can build writing fluency and make writing a more

motivating activity. For struggling writers, formal writing can feel like foreign language because

of the use of obscure grammatical rules and intimidating vocabulary. If such routine is practiced

regularly, progress and development will increase because writers will gain confidence and they

will learn to adapt the strategy of formal writing. By contrast, college students with poor writing

skills must be prompted to write daily and receive rapid encourage about their writing so they

can be motivated of becomingskilled writers. Professors must encourage daily writing by giving

writing assignments or allowing students to write a journal about their learning. Short daily

writing tasks have the potential to lower students’ aversion to writing and boost their confidence

in using the written words. However, (2) the consideration for writing difficulties amongst

9
college students with learning disabilities (LD) must be given attention as they require more

teaching and a different level of intervention. Many students with LD experience difficulties

mastering the process of writing but through interventions the difficulty in writing will be

slightly resolved. There are principles designed to alleviate writing difficulties in college

students with LD such as the provision of effective writing instructions, tailoring writing

instruction to meet students’ need and early intervention to provide additional assistance. It also

includes identifying roadblocks to writing and the deployment of technological tools to improve

writing performance. In some cases, college students find writing unrewarding probably due to

underdeveloped skills and discouragements coming from the environment and here lies the

dilemma of writing. How can a professor connect to a student who finds the subject boring or

unrewarding? Perhaps a unique approach in addressing such a situation is needed to address

writing difficulty. Though it is noted that addressing writing difficulties amongst college students

will never be easy because it is still up to the student whether he or she wants to improve his or

her writing skills. (3) The concept of workshops and seminars that focuses on the development of

learning could be an interactive therapy college students can involve themselves with. Seminars

and workshops will help them how to deal with the type of writing difficulty that they have. It

can be deduced that the result of informative writing difficulty workshops and seminars will lead

to a lower number of college students experiencing the problem. (4) College students who may

feel like they have an unusual writing difficulty must seek for professional advice so it can be

given attention. Sometimes the problem is very simple and could be solved through learning

therapy or medications. In the way, college students can regain their skills in writing.

Main reasons of writing difficulties amongst college students.Writing always involves a topic

and a writer must a have a broad understanding about the chosen subject. (1) Some college

10
students find it challenging to decide or choose a topic where they can anchored their themes or

ideas easily and put it to writing. In some cases, they have too many ideas and they find it hard to

select which one works best for them. (2) The lack of understanding of specific topic is also a

reason why college students suffers from writing difficulties. They find it hard to expand their

ideas in a profound manner due to insufficient knowledge and sometimes poor vocabulary. Due

to poor vocabulary, some college students find it hard to organize their ideas and express their

thought clearly which leads to the difficulty in formulating articles or write ups. (3) The learning

environment can be a pitfall in terms of writing as well because of the many disturbances or

noises whether external or internal. Some college students cannot concentrate when confined on

a crowded and loud room which affects the process of starting to write. Noise and other forms of

disturbances is preventing them from conceptualizing ideas or formulating sentences to support

the said topic. Psychological and physiological imbalance can also lead to writing difficulties.

Mentally and emotionally bothered college students are likely to experience writing difficulty

because they find it hard to focus on something due to the impeding factors that embodies them.

When college students faces the mentioned problems, they start to look for a way out and the big

chances are they will never develop any writing skills or they will never involve themselves with

writing which can lead to failure.

How can professors motivate college students to write better? Writing is an essential tool for

learning and when college students realize that writing is simply another way of communicating

through a pen versus their lips, it will make it more interesting and sensible to them. There are a

few strategies on how professors could motivate college students to come up with a good piece.

(1) The use of photograph can be a motivating tool for them, through their own photographs they

11
would be able relate their emotions to writing easily. Seeing their own photographs will help

them remember different types of emotions which can lead to effective writing. (2) Graphic

organizer is also a technique that can be used as a guide when arranging ideas in an organized

manner. The use of graphic organizer is also useful because it helps them write coherently and its

efficacy is proven especially when writing stories. (3) Let them record and transcribe their write

ups because listening to their writing and transcribing it is exciting and they can also be aware of

their lapses. Besides, recording can also practice their speaking skills. (4)Encourage them to

make up a pen name that may reflect their own personality because it will boost their confidence

in writing especially when their write ups gets published. Having a pen name is also a personal

identity and they can change it anytime or it can be forever pen name. (5) Integrating artwork

will keep them engage in writing. Allow college students to brainstorm their writing ideas

through pictures or drawings so they can communicate their ideas better. The main purpose of

this is to help them express their thoughts without hesitation. If college students finally

understood what writing really is then the walls will come down and they will start to master the

skills writing and impart their writing difficulty experiences to others.

Techniques on how to overcome writing difficulties in college students. Even professional

writers are experiencing challenges of writing difficulties that is why college students should not

feel downbeat if experiencing such a situation. There are techniques that is said to be proven and

worth trying to overcome writing difficulties especially amongst college students. (1) Writer’s

block is a type of writing difficulty where a writer find it difficult write because of the many

factors affecting her mental or physical state. Writer’s block can be very dangerous, especially if

it is ignored for a long period of time. Taking a rest, making sure of getting enough sleep and not

over-stressing would help to regain thought. Reading is also helpful because it stimulate the

12
brain and enrich ideas which can be used when writing. Having a balanced diet and daily

exercise can also reduce writer’s block. Sometimes the problem is that the brain lacks

stimulation which resort to shut down that leads to writer’s block. Exercise makes the brain

healthy and the body to be physically fit which puts individuals in the right frame of mind. (2) It

is normal that not all the time a college student will be knowledgeable about a certain topic. This

concern leads to the impediment of writing but there are techniques on how to overcome it.

Reading is the best solution someone can turn to if they lack understanding about certain matters.

Internalize all the ideas gained from reading and be open about it because it can contribute to the

topic. Researching on what to write is also another step to consider but never plagiarize the work

of others and never forget to give credit others idea. (3) A little help from friends or professors is

a useful technique when looking for a different view or perception which can improve the quality

of the writing. Dialogues or casual conversation with friends to share ideas, writing process,

worries or stories of success can somehow boost confidence in writing. (4) With the help of

visualization or brainstorming, college students would find writing easier and it may cure some

writing difficulties. Creating a list of ideas related to the topic is brainstorming method that helps

students distinguished which idea is suitable to the topic and with that college students would be

able to arrive to the best topic the paper calls for. Visualization can also be a part of the physical

act of writing because it is easier to write when things or events are visually clear. (5) Recognize

that writing is a complex process and the mastering of such skill requires effort. College students

must not aim for a perfect writing because it can never be achieved in just one go. It can only be

perfected if it is done repeatedly for a long period of time. Failure is always a part of learning

and through failure learners are able to improve themselves and become better.

CHAPTER 3

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS

The importance of writing amongst college student. Good writing skills is viewed as a ticket

to success amongst college students. College students with good writing skills has a better

advantage in academic rating than those with an average skill. College students with a good

writing skills can easily explain his or her thought in written communication which is a part of

any exams in college learning. They also have an eye for detail when analyzing statements from

the book or any piece of writing that needs critiquing. Formulating an idea or statement will be

easy if college students have a good writing skills because they can easily write sentence

comprehensively with the use of grammar and its regularities. Writing skill is also useful when

students venture into career world because it will help them get a better career and promotion is

always possible. Life is all about writing. The better college students like, the more likely they

will succeed in their chosen field or in their studies.

Addressing college students writing difficulty. Addressing college students writing difficulties

calls for attention not only from the learner or student but also from the parents and professors.

Writing regularly is a technique that is effective when addressing writing difficulties amongst

college students. Daily writing routines helps college students build up their skill and confidence

in writing. It also exercise the skill in mastering grammar as they get if they write every single

day. On the one, a different form of strategy is needed when learning disabilities is involved.

College students with LD are given higher attention because they have different needs and they

require different a specific therapy that works best for them. Through conducting seminars and

workshops about writing difficulties, the number of college students experiencing the said

14
problem will decrease because they will gain knowledge on how they can recuperate from it. It is

also suggested that college students who experience writing difficulties must subject themselves

to talking to a school psychologists. A professional advice would be helpful to overcome writing

difficulties. Though it will never be easy to overcome writing dilemmas, college students must

continue to push themselves to become better.

Main reasons of writing difficulties amongst college students. Writing difficulties presents

various reasons that impedes acquiring the skill. Trying to think of a topic or deciding what topic

to write about is an issue that troubles college students when starting to write. The lack of

understanding about the topic is also a barrier to writing because inadequate information will just

lead to senseless writing. The physiological and mental environment of college students are seen

as pitfalls to writing because disturbances can cause stop them from concentrating to write.

However, there are certain types of techniques college students must learn so they can surpass

the many reasons of writing difficulties.

1. How to motivate college students write better. There are ways on how to motivate college

students write better. The use of photograph to represent students’ feelings or emotion is an

effective exercise that could help them write what they really feel about. Photographs represents

ideas, memories, experiences and personalities which is easy to relate through visualizing the

image. The use of graphic tools is also useful if the aim is to let students know how to write

events or ideas in a chronological manner. The proper arrangement of ideas or events is

important to make the whole write up coherent and understandable. Recording and transcribing

write ups are effective ways on developing the writing skills of college student because it helps

them practice the use of proper grammar while assessing their speaking skills. Encouraging

college students to invent their own “pen name” can motivate them to better especially when

15
they see their work being published on a school paper with their own pen name. Integrating art in

writing is another method that is used to encourage students speak their mind without hesitation.

Some college students perceive art differently and through art they are able to come up with

brilliant topics. Motivating college students to write better must not only lies on the hands of

professors but also to the student themselves. They must learn to improve themselves with the

help of others and be more courageous when addressing difficulty such as writing.

How can college students overcome writing difficulty? With the right attitude and perception

college student would be able to surpass writing difficulty. Taking good care of personal health

is seen as the best way to overcome writing difficulty. A strong mind and body can easily

produce ideas which can be put to writing. Reading can also help overcome writing difficulty

because it enriches the mind with ideas or information which can be useful when writing.

College students can also gain writing strategies while reading because while scanning the pages

of the book they find new ways of expressing their thought and organizing it. Brainstorming is

also a technique that helps college students point out an exact topic or idea where they can focus

more. Asking help from peers, friends and professor is good way of assessing the skill of writing

because through the perception of others, college students are able to find out what they must

work on or improve or they can also find support and motivation through it.

3.2 CONCLUSIONS:

Based on the findings, the following conclusions can be drawn:

Writing is a complex process which can never be perfected instantly. Writing is an important skill

in college students. The many reasons of writing difficulty affects the development of writing

skills amongst college students. A good attitude to writing primarily comes from the learner.

16
Writing difficulty amongst college students can only be overcome if they focus themselves to

learning the skill and developing it into a talent.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

The following recommendations are made based on the conclusion drawn:

1. A further study must be conducted to address extreme writing difficulty amongst college

students with learning deficiency.

2. Seminars and workshops about writing must be facilitated by the government or learning

institutions to develop the writing skills of individuals.

Formal, Non-formal and Informal Learning:

What Are the Differences?
Earlier this year I did some applied research on the differences
between formal, non-formal and informal education in both the
sciences, as well as literacy and language education.

These terms have been used by the OECD (Organization for

Economic Cooperation and Development) as well as
researchers and practitioners around the globe. Here’s a
simplified explanation:

Formal education – Organized, guided by a formal

curriculum, leads to a formally recognized credential such as a
high school completion diploma or a degree, and is often
guided and recognized by government at some level. Teachers
are usually trained as professionals in some way.

Non-fo rmal learning – Organized

(even if it is only loosely organized), may or may not be guided
by a formal curriculum. This type of education may be led by a
21
qualified teacher or by a leader with more experience. Though
it doesn’t result in a formal degree or diploma, non-formal
education is highly enriching and builds an individual’s skills
and capacities. Continuing education courses are an example
for adults. Girl guides and boy scouts are an example for
children. It is often considered more engaging, as the learner’s
interest is a driving force behind their participation.

Informal learning – No formal curriculum and no credits

earned. The teacher is simply someone with more experience
such as a parent, grandparent or a friend. A father teaching his
child to play catch or a babysitter teaching a child their ABC’s is
an example of informal education.

These may be overly simplified explanations. There are times

when the lines between each type of learning get blurred, as
well. It isn’t always as cut and dry as it seems, but these
definitions give you a general idea of each type of learning.

If you’re interested, the two reports (one I wrote and the other
I co-authored), they have been archived in 3 countries are
available free of charge. There are links to the full reports here:

A simple Funda to understand formal education is

perceiving knowledge in a systematic way i.e attending regular
school and achieving academic objectives.
Informal education is acquiring life skills and experiences in such a
way that we learn many things openly. In informal education we do
not learn things in any classrooms or any systematic way. Life values,
manners, etiquette, justifying good or bad, family traditions, ethics
and so.. In a word every aspect we learn
from nature and observations such education is informal
education.
Non-formal education is defined as neither formal

22
nor informal but knowledge is acquired through books, social media
or digital media. For example doing academic course through
correspondence courses is known as Non-formal way of
learning. In Non-formal education there is no direct interaction with
any teacher or student but the learning process is nothing but self
learning.
Concisely
Formal education is systematic learning in classroom
Informal education is learning with experiences
Non-formal education is learning with the support of digital
education where there is no direct involvement of teachers but self
help.
