The service interruption time depends on many factors, such as the system software size, upgrade
method, operator's skill, and service configurations. The following service interruption time is for your
reference.
In the following examples, the switches are not configured and they are not in any stack. In
addition, all these switches can provide the PoE function.
If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded
through the serial interface, the service interruption time is as follows (the baudrate is
115200):
S2750: 50 minutes
S5700: 50 minutes
S6700: 47 minutes
If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded
through the network port (FTP mode), the service interruption time is as follows:
S2750: 6 minutes
S5700: 6 minutes
S6700: 6 minutes
If the switches are upgraded by using the command line, the service interruption time is as
follows:
S2750: 3 minutes
S5700: 3 minutes
S6700: 3 minutes
No. Description
1 When you upgrade the software using the command line, stack upgrade, or USB
flash drive, do not copy or delete files.
2 After the version is upgraded, ensure that the configuration is saved because a
later version is compatible with early versions but an early version is
incompatible with later versions. If the configuration is not saved, the
configuration will be lost in the case of version rollback.
3 If the loopback local swap-mac or loopback remote swap-mac command has
been used on an interface in a version earlier than V200R003 to configure MAC
swap loopback, run the start command in the interface view after the upgrade;
otherwise, the MAC swap loopback configuration will be invalid.
4 After the arp learning dhcp-trigger command is used on a VLANIF interface
of the DHCP relay agent in V200R003, dynamic ARP entries are generated only
after DHCP snooping in the corresponding VLAN or on the physical interface
connected to users.
5 After a switch is upgraded from a version earlier than V100R006C00 to
V200R003C00SPC300 with no configuration performed on the switch, some
previously disabled alarms are disabled. These alarms include basetrap, lldptrap,
dldp, and loop-detection.
6 After a switch is upgraded from V100R003 or an earlier version to
V200R003C00SPC300, the default setting of the dot1x handshake function
changes from enabled to disabled. After the upgrade, the dot1x handshake
configuration has no buildrun information.
7 After a switch is upgraded from V100R002 or an earlier version to
V200R003C00SPC300, the value range and default value of the interval
parameter in the mac-authen timer guest-vlan reauthenticate-period
command change. In the old version, the value range of the interval parameter is
1–3600 and the default value is 30 (seconds). In the new version, the value range
is 60–3600 and the default value is 60 (seconds). If the interval has been set to a
value in the range of 1–59 seconds, the interval changes to 60 seconds after the
upgrade.
8 After a switch is upgraded from an earlier version to V200R001 or a later
version, the default aging time of ACLs used for ARP Miss suppression changes
from 50 seconds to 5 seconds.
9 After a switch is upgraded from a version earlier than V200R001C01 to
V200R003C00SPC300, the default setting of the icmp rate-limit enable
command changes from enabled to disabled. After the upgrade, the command
has no buildrun information.
10 After a switch is upgraded from an earlier version to V200R001 or a later
version, the default setting of the set flow-statistics include-interframe
command changes. In earlier versions, the traffic statistics collected on an
Ethernet interface do not include the inter-frame gap by default. In
V200R003C00SPC300 the traffic statistics collected on an Ethernet interface
include the inter-frame gap by default.
No. Description
11 If DAI is enabled on a VLAN and an interface belonging to the VLAN using the
arp anti-attack check user-bind enable command, V200R001 and later
versions use a different rule than that used in earlier versions to check ARP
packets. In earlier versions, an ARP packet is considered valid as long as the
packet passes the check on the interface. In V200R001 and later versions, an
ARP packet is considered valid only when the packet passes the check on the
interface and VLAN.
12 After the switch is upgraded from V200R001C01 to V200R003C00SPC300, the
configuration of the traffic rate statistics collection timer in traffic policies
cannot be restored and the timer value is reset to the default value 300s. In
V200R003C00SPC300, run the traffic statistics interval interval-time
command to set this timer.
13 No buildrun information is displayed after an interface is shut down by loopback
detection. You can use the display interface or display loopback-detect
command to check the status of this interface. An interface cannot automatically
go Up after it is shut down by loopback detection. To restore the interface
without disabling loopback detection on the interface, run the shutdown and
undo shutdown commands or the restart command on the interface.
14 After an S5700-LI or S5710EI switch is upgraded from V200R001C00 to
V200R003C00SPC300 or a later version, its file system will expand from 64
MB to 200 MB. If the system rolls back to V200R001C00, the BootROM will
not be updated. It is highly recommended that you back up important files before
a degrade and limit the size of the files within 61 MB (3 MB reserved for system
software). If the size of files exceeds 61 MB, the system backs up the files in the
following order and discards excess files:
1. Software package for next startup: Sys_StartupFlagRec_S.szCurSwtFile
2. Configuration file for next startup: Sys_StartupFlagRec_S.szCfgFile
3. Patch file for next startup: Sys_PatchUpdateFlagRec_S.szNextPatchFile
4. Patch state file: flash:/$_patchstate_reboot
5. flash:/ *.web.zip
6. flash:/private-data.txt
7. flash:/$_patch_history
8. flash:/serverkey (if any, used for SSH login)
9. flash:/hostkey (if any, used for SSH login)
10. flash:/resetinfo
11. flash:/syslogfile
The system displays "do not power off" during update of the file system. Do not
power off or restart the switch in this process. Otherwise, all data on the switch
will be lost. If the device is powered off due to incorrect operation or for other
reasons, upgrade the software to V200R003C00SPC300 through BootROM
according to section 4.2 or contact Huawei technical support engineers.
15 To upgrade an S5700LI or S5710EI switch using the BootROM menu, upgrade
the BootROM to the latest version, download the latest software package, and
specify the software package for the next startup using the BootROM menu. To
roll back the system version of an S5700LI or S5710EI switch, specify the old
software packet for next startup while retaining the latest BootROM version.
No. Description
16 If a switch has no management interface, enter the BIOS menu and use the first
electrical interface to transfer the software package to the switch. Errors may
occur if you use other interfaces to transfer the software package.
17 If an 5700SI or 5700LI switch has been configured with the maximum number
of ACL CAR entries and inbound rate limiting before it is upgraded to
V200R003C00SPC300, the ACL CAR configuration may be lost after the
upgrade due to insufficient resources for ACL CAR entries.
18 After the system is upgraded to V002R002C00 or a later version, the default
temperature alarm threshold and value range will change. If the temperature
alarm threshold configured in the old version is out of the value range in the new
version, the threshold will change to the default value after the upgrade.
19 If the system version rolls back to an earlier version from V200R002C00 or a
later version, the stack configuration may be lost. When this occurs, the stack
cannot be set up. To set up a stack, reconfigure the stacking function and re-
connect stack cables if necessary.
For example, S5700-LI V200R002C00 adds to stack ports. If the two ports are
used for stacking, the stack cannot be set up after the system version rolls back to
an earlier version.
20 During BootROM update, the XMODEM protocol is transmitted at 128 bit/s. If
the size of a packet is not a multiple of 128 bits, the packet size increases. After
the stack reboots, configurations cannot be restored because the packet size
changes. It is recommended that you download the system software package
through FTP or TFTP.
21 V200R002C00C00SPC100 does not support HGMP. After the software is
upgraded to V200R002C00C00SPC100 or a later version, the HGMP
configuration will be lost.
22 V200R003C00SPC300 supports a maximum of 30000 commands. If more than
30000 commands are executed, some commands may become invalid after
software upgrade.
23 During software degrade, if the system displays "Info: After the system version
is changed successfully, it can only be changed to V200R002C00 or later in next
version change.", do not change the version to V200R001 or an earlier version.
If the system displays "Error: The system cannot be degraded to this version.
Please use V100R006 or a later version.", use V100R006 or a later version.
24 After the trap function is enabled or disabled on V100R006C00, the snmp-agent
trap enable basetrap command is not supported. After the system software is
upgraded to V100R006C00 or a later version, the configuration of the snmp-
agent trap enable basetrap command will be lost. The trap function is not
affected.
25 When the software version is degraded to be earlier than V200R002C00, the
BootROM is not automatically upgraded. After the version is degraded, it cannot
be upgraded again. The S5700EI is not limited by this rule. The software version
of S5700SI cannot be degraded from V200R002C00 to V100R006 or an earlier
version.
No. Description
26 After the software version is degraded or upgraded to any version through the
USB flash drive, index file verification may be failed. A formal patch must be
installed to solve this problem.
27 Before upgrading or degrading V200R002C00C00SPC100 to any version
through the USB flash drive, check whether a password has been set on the
device using the set device usb-deployment password XXXXXX command. If a
password has been set, add <usb-deployment password=XXXXXX;/> to the
index file on the USB flash drive for password authentication. The password in
the index file is in plain text, and cannot contain semicolons because semicolons
are separators in the index file. Authentication can be successful only when the
password in the index file is the same as that on the device. If no password is set
on the device, the password or field can be filled in the index file or not.
28 If the BFD negotiation time set in V100R002 is shorter than 100
ms, the setting of BFD negotiation time is lost after the software
version is upgraded to V200R003.
No. Description
37 After the software version is upgraded to V200R003, the default settings and
value ranges of rate limit on the management port are changed. If the rate limit
before the upgrade is beyond the value range allowed by V200R003, the rate
limit is changed to the maximum value in V200R003. If the rate limit before the
upgrade is the same as the default value in V200R003, the buildrun is deleted.
38 After the software version is upgraded to V200R003, the default settings and
value ranges of cp-car total pps packets are changed. If the rate limit before the
upgrade is beyond the value range allowed by V200R003, the rate limit is
changed to the maximum value in V200R003. If the rate limit before the upgrade
is the same as the default value in V200R003, the buildrun is deleted.
39 The software version is upgraded to V200R002 or a later version. If the ipv6
enable command has not been executed on the interface where dhcpv6 relay is
configured, the DHCPv6 relay configuration will be lost after the upgraded.
40 After the software version is upgraded to V200R001 or a later version, the local
user password may fail to restore. It is recommended that you upgrade the
software to V100R006 first, and then upgrade it to V200R001 or a later version.
Alternatively, you can delete the user account before the upgrade, reconfigure
and save the user account, and upgrade the software.
41 If the software already have patches installed, you do not need to delete the
patches before the upgrade. After the upgrade is complete, the original patches
are not activated.
Run the startup patch command to specify the patch for next startup before the
upgrade.
42 After the stack upgrade is complete, you only need to install the patch on the
master device.
43 The V200R003C00SPC300 does not support setting queue numbers for
protocol packets. After the software is upgraded to V200R003C00SPC300,
the configuration of queue packet-type packet-type queue-value is lost.

In the following sections, the S5700EI is used as an example to describe the upgrade.
You can log in to the switch from a PC through the serial interface or Telnet.
The server and the switch can communicate with each other.
Files for the upgrade are stored in the server.
Figure 1.1 Network diagram of upgrading the system using TFTP or FTP
If no system software is stored on the device, do not restart or power cycle the device during
the upgrade. Otherwise, the system may break down. If the device is powered off
unexpectedly during the upgrade, use the BootROM to upgrade the device. If the upgrade
using BootROM fails, contact Huawei engineers.
Step 4 Run the delete command to delete unnecessary files to ensure there is enough space for
storing relevant upgrade files. Before deleting the unnecessary files, ensure that the files are
backed up or are unwanted. The following is an example of deleting the s-s5700.cc file. For
details, see "Managing the File System" in the S2750&S5700&S6700 Series Ethernet
Switches Configuration Guide – Basic Configurations.
After you run the delete /unreserved command to delete a file from the flash, the file cannot
be restored; therefore, run this command with caution, and a file backup is recommended.
----End
The methods of upgrading the system software using command line are similar on the S2750,S5700,
and the S6700. In the following description, the system software of the S5700EI is upgraded.
The S5700/S6700 has a dedicated management interface, MEth. The MEth interface can be used as
the Layer 3 interface.
Before the upgrade, use the terminal monitor command to enable the terminal to display logs,
traps, and debugging information sent from the information center.
You can use any of the following methods to load the system software:
Use the S5700EI as the TFTP client.
Use the S5700EI as the FTP server.
Use the S5700EI as the FTP client.
Use the S5700EI as the SFTP client
No TFTP client software is installed on the S5700EI; therefore, the customer needs to buy TFTP client
software and install it. The TFTP32 program is recommended.
Do not stop the TFTP server program when you are backing up data.
Step 2 Back up the system software, configuration file, and patch files to the TFTP server.
Before the backup, check the size of the configuration file. After the backup, compare the size
of the original file with the size of the backup file. Ensure that the two files are the same size.

The methods for upgrading the system software using the BootROM are similar on the S5700, and the
S6700. The S5700EI is used as an example to describe the upgrade procedure. In versions earlier than
V200R001C00SPC100, the default password of the BootROM menu is huawei or www.huawei.com.
Impact Services are interrupted during the system software uploading and the
device reboot.
Time Required The software uploading time depends on many factors, such as the
system software size, transmission rate on the serial interface, and
operator's skill. When the transmission rate of the serial interface is
115200 bit/s, the uploading time is about 30 minutes.
Prerequisites The matched BootROM is upgraded.
The flash memory has enough space to store the system software.
Press Ctrl+B before the countdown timer expires, and then enter the password. The default
password is Admin@huawei.com. Then the advanced BootROM menu is displayed. The
following information is displayed:
BOOTROM MENU
Changing the transmission rate of the serial interface causes interruption of the
communication between the PC and S5700EI. To restore the communication between the PC
and the S5700EI, you must set the transmission rate of the serial interface on the PC the same
as that of the serial interface on the S5700EI.
The XMODEM protocol is transmitted at 128 bit/s. If the size of a packet is not a multiple of
128 bits, the packet size increases. After the stack reboots, configurations cannot be restored
because the packet size changes. It is recommended that you download the system software
package through FTP or TFTP.
Select 3. Modify serial interface boot parameter. The following information is displayed:
1: 9600(default)
2: 19200
3: 38400
4: 57600
5: 115200
Select the transmission rate for the serial interface as required. The transmission rate is
expressed in bit/s. The default transmission rate of the serial interface on the S5700EI is 9600
bit/s. A larger value you enter represents a higher transmission rate of the serial interface. It is
recommended that you enter 5. 115200. If you change the transmission rate of the serial
interface on the S5700EI, set the transmission rate of the serial interface on the PC the same
as that of the serial interface on the S5700EI. In this manner, you can restore the
communication between the PC and the S5700EI.
For example, after you select 5: 115200, the following information is displayed:
Baud rate is 115200 bps. Please change the terminal's speed to 115200 bps
In this case, you need to perform the following settings on the HyperTerminal of the PC to
restore the communication between the PC and the S5700EI:
On the HyperTerminal, choose Call > Disconnect. The connection is closed
Choose File > Properties. The Properties dialog box is displayed.
On the Connect To tab page, click Configure. The COM Properties dialog box is
displayed.
Select 115200bit/s from the Bits per second drop-down list box.
In the COM Properties and Properties dialog boxes, click OK.
On the HyperTerminal, choose Call > Call. The connection is reestablished.
Step 4 Upgrade the system software.
Select 2. Download file to Flash through serial interface in the serial interface submenu,
and the following information is displayed:
Choose Transfer > Send File. The Send File dialog box is displayed.
Click Browse to select the upgrade file of the system software. Then select Xmodem from the
Protocol drop-down list box. Click Send to start sending the file.
After transferring the upgrade file, the system prompts you whether to change the file name. If
no, save it with the default file name. The default file name is not the uploaded file name. The
system software name in the flash memory or the default file name hw-switch.cc is used.
Generally, it is recommended that the file name be changed.
Only the files with the file name extension .cc can be used as the upgrade files of the system software on
the S5700EI.
If the file S5700EI-V200R003C00SPC300.cc has already been saved in the flash memory,
the system prompts you whether to overwrite the existing file with the new one. The
following information is displayed:

If an index file contains the following two formats, the S5700-SI uses the information in format (2). If
the required information is not obtained, the S5700-SI uses the information in format (1).
To write multiple items in the index file, press Enter when you finish each item.
(1) To upgrade the same system software and configuration file on multiple devices, fill in the
file in the format <boardtype=s53mv; vrpfile=; cfgfile=; patchfile=;/>.
− boardtype=s53mv is a fixed format, which does not need to be modified.
− Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.
− Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.
− Fill in the patch file name behind patchfile=.
Example:
<boardtype=s53mv; vrpfile=S5700SI-V200R003C00SPC300.cc; cfgfile=vrpcfg.cfg;
patchfile=patch.pat;/>
(2) To upgrade a single device, fill in the file in the format <mac=; vrpfile=; cfgfile=;
patchfile=;/>.
− View the MAC address of the switch on the chassis and fill in the MAC address
behind mac= in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.
− Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.
− Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.
− Fill in the patch file name behind patchfile=.
Example:
<mac=0018-8200-0001; vrpfile=S5700SI-V200R003C00SPC300.cc;
cfgfile=vrpcfg1.cfg; patchfile=patch1.pat;/>
<mac=0018-8200-0002; vrpfile=S5700SI-V200R003C00SPC300.cc;
cfgfile=vrpcfg2.cfg; patchfile=patch2.pat;/>
If you need to upgrade the system software, configuration file or patch file of
V200R003C00SPC300, the index file is in any of the following formats:
<time-sn=201301090851;/>
<usb-deployment password=123abc;/>
<mac=; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=; webfile=; patchfile=;/>
The first line in the index file must be the SN to prevent repeated copy. The SN consists of creation
date + time, for example, <time-sn=201105091219;/>. Before copying a file, the device compares
the SNs. If the SN of a file to be copied already exists, the device does not copy the file. After the
file is copied, the device stores the SN. The index files without SNs are considered invalid, and the
device will stop copying the files.
If an index file contains the following three formats, the device uses the information in format (2). If
the required information is not obtained, the device uses the information in format (3) and then
format (1). When only one USB flash drive is used in the upgrade, the values of mac=, esn=, and
boardtype= are default. When the device obtains the value default, the device starts to copy the file
without comparing it with other files.
When editing an index file, press Enter when a line is finished. After editing the file, save it.
Select the upgrade files, including system software, configuration file, Web file, and patch file as
required.
The upgrade procedures for S5700-LI, S5710-HI ,S5700-SI, S5700-HI , S5710EI and S6700 are the
same.
(1) To upgrade the same system software, configuration file, Web file, and patch file on
multiple devices, fill in the file in the format <boardtype=; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=;
webfile=; patchfile=;/>.
− To obtain the value of boardtype, view device labels or run the display version
command. boardtype=default indicates that all devices will be upgraded.
− Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.
− Fill in the version number behind vrpfile=.
− Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.
− Fill in the web file name behind webfile=.
− Fill in the patch file name behind patchfile=.
The following are the index files of different devices:
<boardtype=S5700-HI; vrpfile=S5700HI-V200R003C00SPC300.cc;
vrpver=V200R003C00SPC300; cfgfile=; webfile=; patchfile=;/>
<boardtype=S6700-EI; vrpfile=S6700EI-V200R003C00SPC300.cc;
vrpver=V200R003C00SPC300; cfgfile=; webfile=; patchfile=;/>
The following two formats are used for upgrading a single device:
(2) <mac=; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=; webfile=; patchfile=;/>
− View the device's MAC address on the chassis and fill in the MAC address behind
mac= in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.
− Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.
− Fill in the version number behind vrpfile=.
− Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.
− Fill in the web file name behind webfile=.
− Fill in the patch file name behind patchfile=.
The following is an example of configuration file:
<mac=0018-8200-0001; vrpfile=; vrpver=; cfgfile=vrpcfg.cfg; webfile=;
patchfile=;/>
If a keyword is not found or matched, the value of this item is considered to be empty.
If the version number behind vrpver= is the same as the current version, the device will not
restart.
Step 4 Copy the index file, system software, configuration file, Web file, and patch file to the root
directory of the USB flash drive.
The index files must be stored to the root directory on the USB flash drive; the other files are stored in
the corresponding directories.
Do not power off the switch during file copy; otherwise, the upgrade fails or the switch
cannot start.
Do not remove the USB flash drive before the upgrade is finished; otherwise, the USB
flash drive may be damaged.

Procedure
Step 1 Power on the S5700-HI, and wait until the system completes the startup (you are advertised to
wait for two minutes).
Step 2 Confirm that the system is operating stably (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks every
two seconds). If the system operating is unstable, wait or solve the issue.
If the SYS indicator is on and in green or orange, the system startup is not finished. Wait
until the system starts successfully.
If the SYS indicator is steady on and blinks red, the system is started but an error occurs.
Fix the problem before the next step. Check whether the power supply and the fan
function properly. If no, power off the S5700-HI, and then restart the S5700-HI. If the
fault persists (the indicator is on and in red), contact Huawei technical support personnel.
Step 3 Insert the USB flash drive.
If the SYS indicator is in green and blinks more than twice every second, the system is
copying the system software and configuration file from the USB flash drive.
After copying the files, the system restarts.
If the SYS indicator is in orange and blinks every two seconds after the restart, the
upgrade is successful. Now you can remove the USB flash drive.
If the SYS indicator is steady on or blinks red, an error occurs. Power off the S5700-HI and
power on it, and then insert the USB flash drive again. If the upgrade fails three times, check
whether the index file on the USB flash drive is correct, or contact the Huawei technical
support personnel.
When using the USB flash drive for upgrade, change the SN in the USB flash drive.
If you want to upgrade the software through USB flash drive upon a failure of USB-based upgrade, load
the files to the USB flash drive again.

The S2750,S5700 and the S6700 support up to nine switches in a stack system.
All the member switches belong to the same series. That is, the EI series and SI series
cannot form a stack.
All the member switches are connected by using stack cables and stack modules.
All the member switches are working properly.
The stacking function is enabled on all the member switches.
The stack processes version upgrade and rollback for new member switches in the same way.
If the flash memory of the new member switch does not have sufficient space to store the
startup software package, the switch automatically deletes a software package to free up
the space. If the switch is an S5700, it deletes a non-startup software package. If the
available space in the flash memory is still insufficient for the upgrade software, the switch
restarts repeatedly. In this case, upgrade the software of the switch to the version of the
stack system manually, and then add the switch to the stack. For the upgrade procedure,
see chapter 4Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch.
During the upgrade, ensure that the stack cables are functioning properly. If the upgrade of
a switch fails, upgrade the system software of the switch to the version of the stack
manually, and then add the switch to the stack.
The running time of the newly added stack must be shorter than the running time of the
old stack; otherwise, the new stack software cannot be upgraded to the same version as the
old stack software through intelligent upgrade.
Upgrade Process
