PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to investigate the awareness of class facilities among

psychology student. Besides, another focus of the study is to determine the effectiveness and

comfort of the facilities provided by the administration at every faculty for UNISEL students. A

good infrastructure plays an important role in many things. This is because, with the availability

of complete and undamaged, it is able to attract students to learn and does not interfere with the

learning system in the lecture room. This study also aims to unravel the problems experienced by

students during the learning process.

In the presence of such research, the administrator can improve any shortcomings and the

damage occurs in the classroom based on complaints that will direct the stream to the

administrator.

5
COMPARISON OF LITERATURE RESEARCH

There is a growing body of work linking educational achievement and student

performance to the quality of air they breathe in schools. Some of this research is just beginning

to make a cumulative mark, and some of the research, for example on thermal comfort, shows

how much variation there is between individuals, making guidance for school construction

somewhat difficult. Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) is widespread, and its effects are too important

to ignore. The U.S. General Accounting Office has found that fifteen thousand schools suffer

from poor IAQ, affecting more than eight million children or one in five children in America's

schools (General Accounting Office 1995). The IAQ symptoms identified—irritated eyes, nose

and throat, upper respiratory infections, nausea, dizziness, headaches and fatigue, or sleepiness—

have collectively been referred to as “sick building syndrome” (EPA 2000).

Meanwhile, temperature and humidity affect IAQ in many ways, perhaps most

significantly because their levels can promote or inhibit the presence of bacteria and mold. For

example, a study of Florida classrooms with relative humidity levels greater than seventy-two

percent found visible mold growth on the ceilings and complaints of allergy symptoms

associated with sick building syndrome (Bates 1996). At the other end of the humidity scale,

Leach (1997) reported findings of a 1970 study done in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada,

which found absenteeism was reduced in schools by twenty percent as relative humidity in the

facilities was increased from twenty-two to thirty-five percent. Wyon (1991) showed that student

performance at mental tasks is affected by changes in temperature, and Fang et al. (1998) found

that office workers are most comfortable in the low end of temperature and humidity comfort

6
zones. These findings support the idea that students will perform mental tasks best in rooms kept

at moderate humidity levels (forty to seventy percent) and moderate temperatures in the range of

sixty-eight to seventy-four degrees Fahrenheit (Harner 1974, Wyon, Andersen, and Lundqvist

1979).

Also, it seems obvious that in a sealed space, without the availability of fresh air from

outside, the occupants of that space will die from asphyxiation. Yet despite this knowledge,

deaths of workers in confined spaces constitute a recurring occupational tragedy (NIOSH 1986).

While we certainly seek to avoid such extreme conditions in schools, a surprising number of

classrooms lack adequate ventilation, and evidence is accumulating to support the common-sense

notion that occupants of a classroom without good ventilation can't function normally and can't

learn at their full capacity. The purpose of ventilating classrooms and school buildings, at

minimum, is to remove or otherwise dilute contaminants that can build up inside. Such

contaminants come from people breathing, from their skin, clothes, perfumes, shampoos,

deodorants, from building materials and cleaning agents, pathogens, and from a host of other

agents that, in sufficient concentrations, are harmful.

Schools need especially good ventilation because children breathe a greater volume of air

in proportion to their body weight than adults do (Kennedy 2001, McGovern 1998, Moore 1998)

and because schools have much less floor space per person than found in most office buildings

(Crawford 1998). But because of the high costs of conditioning the ventilation air in schools to

comfortable temperatures before it is circulated, the designers and operators of school buildings

can be the unwitting architects of learning spaces that impair learning and health by offering

inadequate ventilation—whether this results from economic measures, ignorance, neglect, poor

maintenance, or some combination of these factors.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

According to the statement problem, the main objectives of this paper were listed as follows:

• To investigate the awareness of class facilities among psychology student at Unisel

Bestari Jaya Campus.

• To identify problems of class facilities among psychology student at Unisel Bestari Jaya.

• To evaluate the improvement of class facilities to psychology tutorial room.

8
RESEARCH QUESTION

The following research questions were formulated for the study:

• What the awareness of class facilities among psychology student at Unisel Bestari Jaya

Campus?

• What are the problems of class facilities among psychology student at Unisel Bestari

Jaya?

• What are the improvements of class facilities to psychology tutorial room?

9
METHODOLOGY

Research Design

In this study, we use qualitative data to complete the assignment. Using

qualitative data are description development and good to make a study of it, because it

has the characteristics of a good analysis in the study. The qualitative data also focus on

something the depth of the analysis. Next, field studies, provides an overview of the

background study and discussion of research.

Sampling

In this study, this research used purposive sampling to obtain data. Purposive

sampling is a sampling technique that is often used in making research. In this study,

research sampling focused on psychology students only. We chose the sampling without

any consideration.

Instrument

The instrument uses are two types of methods which are any of acquiring and

collecting data. Firstly the research conducts an observation. Through the observations

we observe five classes, which are class tutorial (BT) 17 until 21. This research focus on

hygiene, lecturer's desk, white boards, doors, quantities of chair, light switch, Wi-Fi

10
connection and air condition. The research was conducted over 30 days. Within the 30 we

observe and identify problems that occur.

Secondly, this study chose respondent 10 people to ask their opinion about the

facilities provided. This interview conducted to find out about their opinion regarding the

comfort and satisfaction of students who use the class.

11
RESULTS AND FINDINGS

This chapter will cover all the findings from the observation and interview answer. The
observations were conducted for 30 days. 10 respondents were involved in the research
interview.

Noise

Through the observation we can see that the classes were separated with removable wall.
It can be open for some occasion. Even though with a wall separated each of the class. The noise
can still be heard from the next door class. Because of the noise, the student would complaint
that it disturbing and them during lecture because they cannot hear the lecture explanations. They
also can’t concentration during lecture because their mind will focus on the noise rather than the
lecture. Saranya explained:

“The wall that separated the class are thin and if the next class
were doing the activities, they can hear all the noise that were
make.”

Which have good facilities?

Facilities such as the air condition, white board, tables arm chair, lecture table, projector,
projector screen and electric plug. Those things should be provided in all of the tutorial rooms.
Administrator should pay attention towards all the facilities because it will be used to as part of
the lecture. Table arm chair were used by student all the time and some of them may be broken.
Siti Majdiah explained:

“I think all the psychologist class not has good facilities. All of the
class has a broken chair and the air condition that are leaking.”

12
Lock the class

Tutorial room are not only been use during lecture but if any student choose to have a
group discussion regarding their assignment, they choose to use tutorial room. It is because the
tutorial room is very comfortable. If the all the class were lock their discussion activities cannot
be continue. But locking all the class will make sure that the class facilities will be protected and
none will try to steal it or will try to ruin all the facilities. Nurul Shahida explained:

“Some of the class may or may not be lock. Student usually has a
group discussion at night.”

Class that are comfortable

Having a tutorial room that is comfortable will help student to boost their confident in
wanting to learn. Comfortable class can be defined as a class that did have a problem in term of
the facilities. It also was the class that does have a problem but it was not a big one. The students
that were interview do have a certain class that they feel comfortable in. Mohaneshwari explain:

“BT 17 is very comfortable because it have a good air condition and

table arm chair. Classes also were lock and were take good care of.

Improvement

Some of the classes that need to have a major improvement because the problem that the
class facing are big and it leave a bad impact toward the student. All of the participants agreed
that the improvement that should be making were the air condition should be repair because of
the water leaking. Chair that is provided were already in bad shape and need to be change to a
new one. Lecturer table were also in bad shape and need to be change. Curtain should be
provided because the lectures were facing the hot sun for 3 hours and it will hurt their eyes.

13
Responsibility toward the class

Management is given a responsible to provide all of the class facilities. They were the
person that in charge in making the list of what type of facilities that were still lacking in each of
the class. But they seem to never pay any attention toward all of it. Students also play a major
role in taking care of all the facilities. It is because they use all the facilities all the time. Nurul
Hidayah explained:

“Both, management and the student should take care of all the
facilities. Management is given a task to monitor all the class and
student use the class all the time.”

Lists all the problem in all the class

Each of the participants listed the same problem that all the class have which is door,
lecture table, table arm chair, air condition and class window. All of them agreed that those that
were listed by them are the only facilities that are a problem.

Safety

Feeling safe in class is every important matter in student life. If a student doesn’t feel safe
in class it will affected their studies. But at night all the student use the class too. At night the
light at the outside of the class were not functioning. Student cannot see the anything at night.
Their feel threaten whenever they walk to class at night.

14
Class size

Sometime the class been use by 80 people of student and the class that were provided
were in small size. The class cannot accommodate the quantities of the student in it. Syafikah
Aliyahni explained:

“In this semester, when I been in BT 21 for class Personnel

Development and Workplace counseling. Student that take both of the
subject were more than 40 students. It is not very comfortable for us.”

Wi-Fi

Internet connection is the most importance part of student life. They can find information
regarding their assignment or others. Student that relay on Wi-Fi make use it all the time to log
in their media social account such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram and Email.
Shantini explained:

“Not all class get Wi-Fi connection from BT 19 until BT 21. But for
BT 18 and BT 17 do get Wi-Fi but the connection wasn’t strong.”

15
DISCUSSION

All the class that is part of the research does have a problem that given an effect towards
all of the psychology students. All the participants that were part of the interview research have
state each of the problem that researcher should take notes. Each of them said the same problem
to each of the classes. The one problem that all of the participants keep repeating is the Wi-Fi
and air condition. Those two were a crucial part of the problem they were facing. The
participants do state that they do not agree that the class door should be lock. But not all of the
class should be lock. The managements should provide a room for student that wanted to use for
their discussion.

One of the participants said that the class windows should hangs a curtain. It is because
the sun will disturb the lecture eye contact with the student and some lecture use projector as part
of the lecture. The sun will ruin the image projecting from the projector. For a disable student the
class facilities that were provided are not suitable for them. If one of the student that use wheel
chair. He or she will find it hard to get to the class because there no ways for a wheel chair to
ride up a stair. So the management should think of a way for a disable student.

For student safety, each of the class should be put a fire extinguisher and the fire alarm
should be in good conditions because we may not know when we will use. There were a time
that stray dog will come and try to eat form a trash that been put at the end of the aisle. Student
that on their way to the class may got attack by the dog. So the management should monitor the
entire problem that may or may not be happening.

Wi-Fi routers that are provided are far from psychology class. That is the reason why all
of the psychology class did get internet connection. Student needs internet connection to gather
more information and log in to their media social accounts. Also, management and student
should know that everything that were provided were both of their responsible. Student
especially should know that they are the one that always use all the facilities in the class. They
need to always remember that it also their responsible not only the management.

16
The management should always monitor each of the class and keep updating each of the
problems or provide a suggestion box at each of the class and CCTV. Any broken facilities
should be repair or replace with a new one. Other than that, sometimes psychology class been
used by other faculty student and psychology student have to find a new class.

If a class were provided with a quality facilities student will perform will in education. As
Fuller (1986) in Likoko, Mutsotso and Nasongo (2013) the quality and availability of school
facilities experienced by a learner determines the quality of education. Additionally, they
emphasized that, the quality and quantity of school resources can affect the quality of education
and students performance. Students that excel in their studies, it will leave a mark towards the
university. Those types of problem should be taken seriously. If no one ever taken an action
towards the problem, it will create a bigger problem and will leave a mark toward the
institutions.

17
CONCLUSION

As it is clearly seen, all of the psychology class still lacked class facilities that help to effectively
run teaching and learning activities. As information obtained from the observation gathered
showed class facilities such as air conditions, Wi-Fi connection, table arm chair and lecturer
table. This in turn have a negative impact on teaching learning activities also lecture and
student’s motivation. If the class were provided with a good qualities facilities the university can
attract new student to come and register to the university.
