Find the form of be and try to find the simple past continuous pattern in the text !

The past continuous and continuous forms, in general, are used with action verbs such
as talk, drive, play, etc. The continuous form is not used with stative verbs such as
'be', 'seem', 'taste', etc. Some stative verbs can be used as action verbs so there are
some exceptions. For example, 'smell' - It smelled good. (stative verb) / He was
smelling the roses when she walked by the window (action verb.)

The function are :

a. To indicate that one action was in progress when another action occurred.
b. To indicate that two actions were progress simultaneously.
c. To indicate an action that happened at a certain time in the past.

For the formulas are

 Nominal form :
a. Affrimative : S+ was / were + Complement
b. Negative : S + was/ were + Complement
c. Was/were + S + Complement ?
 Verbal form :
a. Affrimative : S+ was / were + Verb(ing) + Complement
b. Negative : S + was/ were + not + Verb(ing) + Complement
c. Was/were + S + Verb(ing) + Complement ?

Time clause that can be used are when and while

For example are :

 When the phone rang, I was watching TV.

 I was watching TV when the phone rang.
 While I was watching TV, the phone rang.
 The phone rang while I was watching TV.
