MY INDIVIDUALITY
Josiah Alexander Ngwoke is a Nigerian Afro
pop singer based in South Africa. Born in Ebonyi
State of Nigeria, Iyioji Akaeze he grew up in an
underprivileged family of seven children.
As the first born, had the responsibility to look
after his siblings as is customary in most African
homes. Josiah, who now goes by the stage
name Kingstyle, developed the love of music
when he was 13 years old. He would come home
from schooland sit in solitude where he would
secrete juicy lyrics through his pen onto paper.
Josiah has constantly challenged himself. He
began song writing and singing in his early teens
and is influenced by every genre of music from
Afro pop to Gqomu.
Although he is a young and upcoming artist, it’s
clear through his music that Kingstyle has the
vision, range and creative conviction to make a
great impact on the Music Industry on a
Continental Scale.
KINGSTYLE has travelled to many countries outside his
home country in pursuit of finding himself and cultivating his
love of music. After completing his basic primary and
secondary education, he moved to Ebia State University to
study the Law.
Due to financial constraints, he was unable to raise the
necessary funds to pursue his desire. He identified a gap in
the furniture industry and decided to study professional
upholstery at Porthacourt City Rivers State in Nigeria -
combining it with his natural talent of working with wood and
material.
Recognising that it was taking too long for him to realise his MY FOOTPRINT
music dream, he moved to Malaysia where he stayed for a
short period partly due to harsh weather and that his stay
there bore no fruits towards advancing his musical
aspirations.
In 2012, he moved back to Africa but this time to
Johannesburg in South Africa, where he struggled to find
employment but got an opportunity to perform at weddings,
friends’ parties and small gigs.
Thus far, he has not received any opportunities to perform on
a big stage with renowned musicians. Disheartened, 2013
saw Kingstyle leaving Joburg for Durban where he has found
warmth and friends.
MY INSPIRATION

African contemporary music, commonly

called Afropop, is as diverse as the African
continent itself. It encompasses more than 50
genres, which in turn convey an array of
languages, cultures, histories, political
movements and personal stories.

The issues around the World especially in

Africa are Kingstyle’s inspiration behind his
lyrics and singing talent. A rare gem, Kingstyle
believes in himself as his own role model.

When composing songs, Kingstyle plunges

straight to the deepest, most intimate, and
most significant aspects of life experiences. In
a compact form, this contemplative artist
imparts all the information essential to
understanding the complexities of African
issues, while putting them in a political and
cultural context; spicing up the mix with
generous helpings of anecdote.
 My Artistry

MY ARTISTRY His earliest works were merely random scribblings, but as he

matured musically and began to apply the principles of
conventional composition to his favourite hits, each song
grew into complete melodies and harmonies.
The skilful blend of evocative counter-melodies and
demonstrative lyrics is the bedrock of Kingstyle's music. His
song writing encompasses diverse genres including hip-hop,
dancehall and even Gqom, provoked by his imaginative
sentience. He believes his music falls under the banner of
the Afro-pop genre.
He never ceases to seek new learning opportunities to
develop and improve himself; Kingstyle incorporates each
new experience into his repertoire of Afro-pop to suit every
occasion.

He describe his Gqom music as an evolving genre that

transcends the beat to possessing dance movements that
everyone wants to try on the dance floor. To top it off, his
Gqom encompasses inspiring and educational lyrical
content.
FROM SHAM STEP TO DRILL

A large part of Kingstyle’s music career has been

shaped by performing on small stages - sometimes
doing covers; this is a platform and opportunity whose
value he dares not downplay.
Stepping forward and becoming a music legend,
performing on big stages with giants of music is the
ultimate dream for Kingstyle.
Apart from being a songwriter, composer and a
singer, he owns a recording studio that he initially
installed for personal use but now he is recording other
struggling artists.

His determinations involve becoming a music legend

himself, leaving subsequent generations with a
comprehensive African history through his music.
Kingstyle’s rich, soulful voice is a gift to the African
music industry.

Having composed and recorded more
than 20 songs thus far, Kingstyle is keen on
releasing more. All these songs have a
unique and eclectic sound where he
rhythmically orates about the Black
Diamond Colonial Master, Africa’s
economy, Government and many other
socio-political issues.
