The Benefits of Knowing a Foreign Language

(Expository Essay)

According to the Cambridge.Org, Language means a system of communication

consisting of sounds, words, and grammar, or the system of communication used by
people in a particular country or type of work. There are about 5000 languages spoken in
the world today but scholars group them together into relatively few families – less than
twenty. Many scholars believe the first spoken language appeared in Sub-Saharan Africa
at about the same modern humans emerged. From there, humans and their language
spread out into Mesopotamia and as these spread out the Mediterranean, Europe and
Asia, many new languages were born of this single ancient one. Some well-known
members of the Indo-European language family are Greek, Latin, Spanish, English,
Persian, Sanskrit and Hindi.
Today’s increasingly interconnected and interdependent world, proficiency in
knowing a foreign language is a vital skill that gives you the opportunity to engage with
the world in a more immediate and meaningful way-whether in your neighborhood or
thousands of miles away. Language are linked to each other by shared words or sounds
or grammatical constructions. The theory is that the members of each linguistic group
have descended from one language, a common ancestor. In many cases that original
language is judged by the experts to have been spoken in surprisingly recent times – as
little as a few thousand years ago.
Knowing a foreign language gives you the benefit to connect, one of the most
rewarding aspects of the human experience is our ability to connect with others. Knowing
the language makes you a local no matter where you are, opening up your world literally
and figuratively. You will be humbled by the kindness of strangers. You will build lifelong
friendships. And for these reasons alone, you will see the reward of learning languages
for many years to come. Language helps advance your career. It feeds your brain, people
who speak more than one language have improved memory, problem-solving and critical-
thinking skills, enhanced concentration, ability to multitask, and better listening skills.
They switch between competing tasks and monitor changes in their environment more
easily than monolinguals, as well as display signs of greater creativity and flexibility. It let
you see the world, while monolingual travelers are capable of visiting the same places,
travelers who know more than one language are more easily able to navigate outside the
tourist bubble and to connect and interact with the place and its people in a way that is
often inaccessible to those without the language. Learning a second language also opens
additional doors to opportunities for studying or working abroad. When you learn a new
language, you develop new brain networks that are primed and ready when you
embarked in learning a third language. Language also boost your confidence, it puts
yourself out there and moved out of your comfort zone. It will also strengthen your
decision making, study shows that second language are more reason driven than those
made in your native language. Language helps us to gain perspectives, learning about
another culture sheds lights on aspect of our own culture – both positive and negative –
we may not have previously considered.
