Reaction Paper: Goyo Ang Batang Heneral

Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is all about our hero Gregorio Del Pilar. This film is a
continuation of the story “Heneral Luna” where Philippines is still battling against United
States. Gregorio Del Pilar is one of the youngest in Philippine Revolution and the
Philippines-American War. He fought bravely for President Aguinaldo and for the
Philippines. He was the President’s favorite soldier for his undying loyalty. He was also
know for being “babaero” it may have been a negative image of him but at least, Goyo
has proved himself man enough to face the enemies and fight for our country and not
just for Aguinaldo. Goyo was promoted by the President to become General that would
lead the revolutionary forces in Bulacan and Nueva Ecija against the Americans. He
and his soldiers made an assault in Bulacan to get rid of the Americana, followed by an
attack in Quingua. They were forced to retreat heading north when Americans attacked
different areas. He also led the battle in Tirad Pass he then was killed by the Americans
in this battle.

Goyo shows us that not all leaders or heroes that we look up are strong enough to
handle the burden of fighting for the country. There is also war raging inside Goyo
because of his paranoia, mistrust and doubt. He sees visions of his past trauma. He
always thinks of what Bernal said whether he is a true leader or just a guard dog that
follows President Aguinaldo’s orders. Gregorio Del Pilar’s adoration for his president,
Emilio Aguinaldo, was unparalleled, but with the things he had to do, it broke him. He
became confused, lost, and torn, but the worst that it would do to him was that it would
result in his death.

The film also shows that what happened years ago are still happening today. Like how
our politics work, manipulating the minds of the people and creating false news just to
achieve their evil plans. They are killing who is against the administration that will be a
hindrance in their future plans. The film also showed Filipinos different bad attitudes the
most unforgettable was in the battle of tirad pass where a Filipino told Americans
another route to the top of the mountain where they lose because of that.

The lessons I learned from this film was the danger of idolatry where Goyo was
questioned of his identity he was always reminded “Tandaan mo kung sino ka”. I also
learned that battles are need to be taken seriously because the film showed us as
selfish kids who are trying to fight a grown man’s war, Instead of helping each other
Filipinos are quarreling against each other. And lastly too much of something can
destroy everything. This film showed me the flaws of the people we call heroes it’s all
natural, there are still humans after all. Let’s learn from mistakes by taking this story as
a warning to don’t get lost in the middle of chaos. Let’s take time to remember who we
are and what we are fighting for.
