State Introduction
Gujarat is located on the western coast of the Indian Peninsula and it is one of the most
industrialized states in the country. The state shares its borders with Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra and the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The Arabian
Sea borders the state both to the west and the south-west. The state has a coast line of 1600 Km
with many natural harbors and home to large ports like Kandla and Mundra (the largest private port
in India) and is well connected to the rest of country.

Why Gujarat
Gujarat accounts for the largest share in the total investments in the food processing sector

Gujarat is keen to promote the agro-processing industry. In the budget of 2017-18 for the

Gujarat is one of the highly developed states in the country and its agricultural strength lies
in its diversity of climate, strong marketing infrastructure, enterprising farmer base and,
1600 km coastal belt. The state has more than 50% of the land under net cultivable area.

In the current times, the state’s agriculture economy has


witnessed a shift towards high value crops like cotton, SNAPSHOT OF LAND

Major agricultural produce of the state includes cotton, groundnut (peanuts), dates, and sugar cane,
milk and milk products. Gujarat is the dominant producer of tobacco, cotton, and groundnuts in
India. Other major crops produced in state are rice, wheat, sorghum (jowar), pearl millet (bajra),
maize, pigeon pea (tur dal) and gram.

Gujarat has the following marketing facilities 14 in the state:

 Food Processing Units: More than 30,000 food processing units are
operating in Gujarat providing employment to over 1 million people.
 Agri-Export Zones: Total of 20 agri-export zones, with focus on mango
and vegetables and sesame seeds have been identified by the State
Government, 15 for Mango and Vegetables and five for sesame seeds
 There are 194 Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) market
yards and sub-market yards in the state.

Dairy Sector in Gujarat 15:
 Gujarat is one of the largest milk producing states in India with
the contribution of 7.75% share in the total milk production of
India.
 The state having 17 Cooperative dairy milk unions & 25 private
dairy plants has a milk collection of 3.45 billion liters with over 3
million milk producers, affiliated to more than 15,000 Primary
Milk Cooperative Societies.
 Milk contributes to 22% to the Agricultural GDP of Gujarat and is
one of the biggest sectors for supporting livelihood in the state.
