Art Critiques

I. Describe the Class

This is the typical art one, high school class. There would be about 32 students in the
class, with about four being special needs.

II. Subject/Skill:

The goal of this lesson is to introduce the idea of applying specific art criteria to evaluate
artworks through a critique process involving description, analysis, interpretation, and
judgment.

The students will observe fine art slide, write formal critique, and fill every line, using
pencil, critique sheet hand-out to be completed during 10 minute time-period, during
daily class period.

III. Objective(s)

Students will choose and evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas.
Students will reflect and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work
of others.

IV. Procedures

I give short lecture on critique and show fine art slides of artwork and discuss each of the
individual steps of formal critique over two class periods.
Each day following lecture and discussion I will lead in oral critique of an art piece.

The students will receive a handout of procedures and objectives for project
The students will participate in oral critique (led by instructor)
The students will do independent critique work during first 10 minutes of the last class
period.

VI. Modifications
Alternate lesson assignment will be given to students not capable of writing critique.
Studio projects and examination of artwork in books.

VII. Assessment

Assessment will be made through participation in oral critique of fine art slides as well as
teacher observation and evaluation of written critique sheet. This is an ongoing project
and will be evaluated on student use of art vocabulary, and support of judgments using
principals and elements of art.
