Now includes the ability to specify orientation of the angle legs and to subsequently calculate the
section properties about the modified axis orientation. The following are addressed
SLVD Unequal leg - short leg vertically down
SLVU Unequal leg - short leg vertically up
LLVD Unequal leg - long leg vertically down
LLVU Unequal leg - long leg vertically up
EQVLD Equal leg - long leg vertically down
EQVLU Equal leg - long leg vertically up
2 Includes calculation of the bw factor which is utilized in the 13th Edition AISC Manual - equation
F10-6 for calculation of allowable moments about the major principle axis for unequal length
angles. The proper sign of bw is also calculated which is dependent upon whether the shear
center is in flexural compression or tension.

x y'
y'' x''
Input
For purposes of calculating the section properties and the principle axes x' and y' ,the angle is initially
oriented with the long leg vertical. The angle is subseqeuntly rotated depending upon the selected
leg orientation. The principle axis closest to the vertical is labelled y'' while the one closest to the
horizontal is labelled x''. Properties are then calculated about the x'' and y'' axes.
Section Properties
For this calculation the longer leg (L1) is always taken as the vertical and the shorter (L2) as horizontal
Neutral axis location with respect to the geometric axes
Calculate βw
bw is used in determining the allowable bending moment for unequal length angles about the major
principle axis - AISC Formula F10-6. It reflects the location of the shear center relative to the principle
axes and is independent of the angle thickness. It is calculated here in accordance with the method
presented by Ziemian in "Guide to Stability Design Criteria for Metal Structures".
The sign of bw is positive when the shear center is in flexural compression. bw is negative
when the shear center is in flexural tension.
