ABSTRACT

The current traffic sitation is complicated, many solution and idea is raised. Among them,

the Public Transporation is focused and Subway Line is the one being chosen. An aim of

our research is to consult the people to use the Subway Line regularly, in order to do that

we have to understand why they do not choose public transit as their usual transport

mean. Participants would answer a set of 8 questions online, each is selected thoroughly.

The result shows that Bus Quality took highest responsibility, followed with other

reasons. The result shows that if we want to consult them to use the Subway, we need to

improve said problems.

iii
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Traffic had become an knotty problem of Ho Chi Minh City since 2000. Several projects

was suggested in order to settle this question without significant success. It became more

more chaotic and complicated as the polulation grew.Consequently, public transportation

became a saviour, to be more detail , that was the subway.

Numerous debates and articles were raised. In those articles, the journalists agreed that

the enormous quantity of personal vehicles, such as scoopers and automobiles were the

main reason (Nguyen L. ) meanwhile quite number of them stated that the quality of

infrasructure was the certain cause (Unknown, Urban traffic congestion - Cause and

Solution - Finding from Construction Planning). In that situation, some journalists

pointed out that public transportation might be an answered, as the convenience it

brought is remarkable. Bus was the example in this articles (Unknown, Getting the citizen

into the habit of using friendly- environment public transportation)

The findings of studies examining the advantages of using subway, Phil Silverwitz

(Silverwitz, 2017) stated some benefits of using subway, as well as the difficulties of they

might give up using subway after a certain time riding them (McMahon, 2013). These

1
documents had contributed enough reference for this study, from the habit, chance, and

struggles when carried out the necessary projects.

The purpose of this study was to plan some propose of using subway to settle the current

traffic situation of HCMC and getting the citizen the habit of using underground

transportation in the meantime effectively, from now to 2020.

The first part of this research paper is the introduction about the traffic situation of

HCMC, It is followed by the proposals of how to get people use the underground transit.

After outlining the research findings and discussion, the study concluded with the

successful chance and complexion when carrying out

2
CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

An article (Unknown, Current Traffic Situation in HCMC) says that the traffic situation

in HCMC was complicated and had many potential risk. Almost 70% accident occurred

between 17h00 and 24h00; stress, exhaustion , day-night temperature, lightning source

gap ( especially for transporation driver) were the main reason. Alcohol overuse and

traffic awareness were considered cause. Furthermore, Duy Nguyen (Nguyen D. , 2012)

points out that each year the amount of vehicle in HCMC would increase to 1,83M; the

number of them had upto 13% compared to last year, meanwhile the roadway expand

was just under 0,3%. Public construction like subway line or parking lot was also

mentioned.

Public transport had been a common mean for foreign citizen. National Express Transit

(Transit, 2017) shows the benefits when using public transport were ‘communities

financially, reduces air pollution, increased fuel efficiency, reduced traffic congestion,

saves money, increases mobility, frees up time and safer’. A statistic also points out that

people board public transportation 35 million times each weekdays and employ nearly

420,000 people (Unknown, Facts). Meanwhile in Vietnam, this kind of transportation

was not used regularly due to the inconvenience and private vehicles were seen as a

social status (Trung, 2017)

Many proposal had been presented to increase the public transit efficiency parallel with

attracting the citizen to use them like lane arrangement adjustment, technology or

3
publicization (Lao, 2012). The 4.0 technology was about sharing bike, lane arrangement

adjustment focused on expanding roadway, road sign and polices working when in rush

hour and publicization was on how to make the people obey the rule voluntarily and

naturally. However, the result was not positive, citizen still declined taking public

transport and the troublesome situation remained the same.

5
Chapter 3: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY.

3.1. Settings:

To find out a solution for this complicated situation, many ideas had come up and using

public transit had been considered. Before conducting this plan, consulting to use the

public transportation was necessary. Because of that reason, a survey had been produced

to inquire why people did not want to use public transit, beside the inconvenience and

social status reason.

3.2. Participant:

A short survey named Collecting opinion about Launching subway line in HCMC had

been conducted online. Twenty one HUFLIT Junior English Major students despite male

or female had been chosen to take part in this survey automatically. All the participants

were aged between 19-21. The data collecting process was happened throughout the day,

not depended on the period of the day.

3.3. Method:

The survey required the participant to answer 8 questions, ranged from the place they

lived, their opinion about the current traffic situation, their dissatisfaction about public

transit , how they think about launching the subway line and the reasonable price ticket.

To measure the dissatisfaction of the current traffic situation and how they willing to take

the subway line if it was operated, two question asking what they think was the problem

6
of public transit and the frequency if the station location were convenient for them was

used. The survey was carried out in 5 days, from 28th April to 2nd May, 2018..

3.4. Data Statistic:

Quantitative method was used, as the results and findings based on the figures and

statistic that was collected. The data was plotted and presented by pie charts.

Surprisingly, they were 61/9% participants said that they will take the subway if it is

operated, and the detail of result is presented in the following chapter.

7
CHAPTER 4: RESULTS

The first part of this research paper is the introduction about the traffic situation of

HCMC, It is followed by the proposals of how to get people use the underground transit.

After outlining the research findings and discussion, the study concluded with the

successful chance and complexion when carrying out.

Figure 1 shows that, when being asked about what they displeased most about the public

transportation quality, 38,1% said that that was the Convenience, the same number

responsed Bus Quality was the problem needed to be improved, meanwhile just a small

number of those interviewed suggested that was the Staff’ Attitude. Those answered

indicated clearly what we should do to consult them using the public transport, lead to the

reducing in the amount of vehicles and congestion situation in HCMC.

8
FIGURE 1: Public Service Quality Survey

Moreover, from the data of Figure 2, it is apparent that most interviewees willinged to use

the subway line if it was convenient for them, since 61,9% said yes when being asked,

just 9,5% said no and one-third of the participants said they will consider based on the

situation. These figures shows that a large number of people longed for a better traffic

situation passionately and will be ready to use the subway line if it is available.

9
FIGURE 2: Frequency of using Subway Line If Available

The result is significant at the reasonable ticket in Figure 3, when 33,3% said that 10.000

– 25.000 VND/ ticket was reasonable, one-third of the participants said that 25.000-

40.000 VND/ ticket and Monthly Ticket: 150.000-200.000VND/ 30 ticket was

affordable, just a small number of those interviewed suggested Above 40.000VND/ ticket

was sensible. It is clear that people will use the subway regularly, if the price is fall into

about 10.000-25.000VND/ ticket, this result is understandable compared the average

income of HCMC citizen

This study has taken a step in the direction of inquiring the demand of the HUFLIT

Junior English Major students. It is possible, of course, that other school or participants

with different opinions may produce entirely different results. In addition, it is important

to emphasize that methodological problems in the research design limit out interpretation.

12
The approach outlined in this study should be replicated in other school, workplace or

location to construct more details in variety of jobs.
