Part 1

The risk assessment of student desk

I have divided the hazards in 3 main categories

 Ergonomics
 Physical
 Other

Ergonomics hazards includes the monitor, keyboard, mouse, laptop, chair design, table
design, and foot rest.
Physical hazards includes the lighting of the area, proper air conditioning of area, hanging
things beside the desk, books on the book shelf
Other hazards includes the trailing of the wires on the desk, use of eatables on the desk.
Description of hazards and why are they considered risk
Ergonomics

Monitor
The user is directly facing it when sat can be effected from glare and flicker with can cause
damage to eyes hence it is considered risk.

Keyboard

The keyboard must be placed on a proper place with soft keys otherwise it would result in
ergonomics injuries due to fatigue in finger and improper position of keyboard and it result in
risk.

Mouse

The placement of mouse and improper shape of mouse can also contributes to fatigue which
later causes the injury.

Laptop

Using laptop by placing it on the laps on legs which could cause the damage to the legs due to
the heat generated by the laptop therefore it is risk
Chair design

The chair available is simple and less ergonomic shape.it has no proper adjustability of height
and back supporting and is wood structure with no cession for hand rest. Therefore it is
considered risk.

Table design

The table available is not of proper design it does not have separate space for monitor and
keyboard draw and proper feet rest. As a result of which it causes fatigue and result in injuries
therefore it is considered risk.

Physical

Lightning

The lighting condition of the desk are not proper which results in strain to eyes of the student
siting on the desk, hence resulting in injury therefore it is considered as risk
Air conditioning

Hanging things

The hanging things and board can fall down from the wall and can result in damage of monitor or
can cause any injury to the student therefore it is possible risk

Books on the shelf

The trailing books on the shelf can fall down and could cause damage to the monitor or student
siting down can be injured therefore this hazard is considered as risk.

Other

Trailing wires

The trailing wires on the desk can possibly cause electrocution and can result in fatal injury
therefore this hazard is considered as a risk.
Edibles on the table

The edibles placed on the desk could result in electric shock from the electrical appliances
Present on the desk therefore this hazard is considered as risk.

Part 2

Summary of Risk Assessment

Number Hazard found Risk Control measures for risk Cost Residual risk
level level
1 The chair should be adjustable in
Chair design High height, padded, with free-moving 30$ Low
wheels, and should be stable.

The chair should have lumbar support

for the user’s lower back.

The user can position the chair

comfortably in front of or under their

eye strain

to prevent the damage by the heat.
5 Mouse Proper sized and shape mouse must
Medium be used to prevent the fatigue 2$ Low
6 lightning A proper lighting must be used and
Medium extra lamp should be used to reduce 2.5$ End
