Introduction
What is the mechatronics?
The term mechatronics is composed of “mecha” from
mechanics and “tronics” from electronics, introduced
in the late 1960s by Japan’s Yaskawa Electric
Company.

Introduction
What is the mechatronics?
“Synergistic integration of mechanical engineering
with electronics and intelligent computer control in
the design and manufacturing of industrial products
and processes.”

Introduction
Why Mechatronics?
▪ Ability to increase competitiveness of the product
through use of technology
▪ Able to respond rapidly and effectively to changes in
market
▪ Support and enable development of new products (any
new ideas of urs….. )
▪ Enhance existing products.

Mechatronics system Components
Mechanical elements
Mechanical elements refer to mechanical structure, mechanism,
thermo-fluid, and hydraulic aspects of a mechatronics system.

Mechatronics system Components
Actuators
An actuator is a type of motor for moving or controlling a
mechanism or system. It is operated by a source of energy, usually
in the form of an electric current, hydraulic fluid pressure or
pneumatic pressure, and converts that energy into some kind of
motion. An actuator is the mechanism by which an agent acts
upon an environment

Mechatronics system Components
Sensors
A sensor is a converter that measures a physical quantity and
converts it into a signal which can be read by an observer or by an
instrument.

Mechatronics system Components
Electrical/ Electronic elements
1- Electrical elements refer to Electrical components (e.g., resistor
(R), capacitor (C), inductor (L), transformer, etc.), circuits, and
analog signals
2- Electronic elements refer to transistors, diode, optoisolators,
operational amplifiers, power electronics, and signal conditioning

Mechatronics system Components
Control Interface/Computing Hardware
Control interface/computing hardware elements refer to Analog-
to-digital (A/D) converter, digital-to-analog (D/A) converter, digital
input/output(I/O), counters, timers, data acquisition and control
(DAC) board, and digital signal processing (DSP) board.

Mechatronics system Components
Control /Computing software
Computer/Information System elements refer to perform:
– dynamic system analysis, optimization, design, and simulation
– virtual instrumentation
– rapid control prototyping
– hardware-in-the-loop simulation
– PC-based data acquisition and control

Mechatronic engineer is often therefore to act as the link between

the specialists and to provide the necessary channel of
communication through which ideas and thoughts can be
transferred
