Philosophical Portrait of Myself Karla Sida-Berumen

Roster #18

Throughout my life, I have experienced many things that have shaped the person that I

am today. I am an independent person. I have gone through some life struggles alone and due to

that, I learned that you will always go through things alone. At the age of 10, my father was

deported. This took a huge toll on my family as a month before that my grandfather passed. I was

always very attached to my father. When he left, I was left to fend for myself. Since it was still at

a very young age, I presume that my immediate family thought that I did not understand what

was going on. It has been 8 years and we are still separated from my father. Throughout the

years, I had to mature at an early age. My mother was struggling to provide for my sister and I

that we never got the chance to see her that often. My sister Laura is four years older than me.

Laura was going through her teenage years so she would lock herself in her room and do who

knows what. I was still considered as child then. I would spend most of my time with my father

so when he left I was alone most of this time. Due to this, I grew up to be very independent. For

most of my life it thought being independent was a bad thing. Now that I am older, I learned to

appreciate my independence. It taught me to become a leader. To create my own thoughts and

opinions and I am grateful for these qualities. Five years from now, I hope I can pass these

qualities to some of my future students.

In five years I hope to be finished with my Bachelors in Secondary Education with a

focus on English. I want to inspire my students to think critically and creatively. I want my

students to leave my classroom thinking about the materials discussed in class. I aspire for my

students to be able to connect their real life experiences to materials being discussed in class. I
would say that I am more of a “in person” learner. I have taken a few online courses since

beginning my college education. I have found that I do not retain the same amount of knowledge

as I do in a live lecture. I like to see examples of work of past assignments completed. An online

course would probably not be ideal for a learner like myself.

The education philosophy’s that I believe I fall the most under is between Perennialism

and Social Reconstructionism. With Perennialism, the classroom environment is more teacher-

centered. This type of instructor allows very little flexibility in their classroom. Perennialists like

to discipline minds to think rigorously. Social Reconstructionism encourages students to educate

themselves on changes going on in society. Social Reconstructionism discusses topics like

racism, sexism, climate change, environmental pollution, homelessness, poverty, substance

abuse, homophobia, and violence. The teacher’s role in a Social Reconstructionism environment

is to explore social problems like these. To bring awareness to students that these problems are

real and that they can make a change in the world. In my Service Learning, I volunteered at

Chispa Nevada, a climate change organization for the Hispanic and Latino community. During

my experience I learned to reach out to the community about how real these situations are and

that we together can take action and make a huge difference. I was surprised to see how many of

the people I discussed climate change with were as clueless as I was and willing to support and

advocate for cleaner renewable energy.

The educational philosophy that I am least like is Existentialism. With Existentialism,

students are left to direct their own learning. I think that students need guidance. A little push in

the right direction to get them started. Existentialism puts a lot of pressure on students to know

certain things that they just might not understand yet. If the students decide what and when they

learn, it will create major setbacks and every student will be at a different pace.
Throughout my experience in my Field Observations, I learned that Students are more

engaged when they are able to put themselves into their work. For Example, the classroom I am

observing is writing personal narratives. These students are really engaged with the assignment

and are having little to no trouble connecting themselves to their writing. I also observed that it’s

very beneficial for students to work on their own as much as it is for them to work in groups.

This gives students a chance to form their own opinions and thought independently, but also

allows them to share their thoughts and relate to their peers. During class discussions, as I

experienced in this class, it is very beneficial for us to fully understand a topic. This allows

students to see various sides to a scenario and gather different opinions. One thing that a student

says about a topic might inspire a thought within another student. I believe that this teaches

students that sharing their opinions is okay. It helps them learn to not be afraid to voice their

opinions and to speak their minds.

Ones perspective of them is always different than what others see you as. I hope that

what I strive to be is what I become. I hope to be the guidance students seek in their teachers. I

want my future students to be unafraid to stick up for what they believe in and be prepared for

what the adult world has to offer.
