On 6th October 2019, students from class SETG-02 were assigned to present
an assignment given to each groups on that day on the main title Engineering Ethics.
We are given a situation where we are supervising a product with specifications that
only A-made parts may be used. Late in the project we discovered a sub-contractor
has supplied a part with B-made bolts. They are not very noticeable and would
function identically to A-made bolts. Our customer urgently needs the finished product
and what we should do at this moment.
The issue with the problem in that situation is that the material used in the
product does not comply the specifications of the customer's requirements as the sub-
contractor uses other materials.
So we discussed to the group about the situation. We’ve come up with two
decisions or ways to deal with the situation. For the first time, we will try to have a
good discussion with the sub-contractor. We will try to explain to him that we have
found that he has used a part with B-made bolts, whereas the product specification
only uses part A-made bolts. We will ask them to convert the B-made bolts to A-made
bolts as the product does not comply with product specifications and customer
requirements. B-made bolts also do not undergo any tests to verify the safety and
durability of the material. The product may be used by many people over the long
term. Therefore, if the material used in the product is not tested in advance it may
cause various problems in the future. We will also ask them to prepare within the time
set for the product agreement to be finalized. Otherwise, we will require them to
compensate our company for their acts as a sub-contractor and will not use their
services for the next project. However, we will still notify the customer of this problem
and request a little extra time to prepare the product and provide a price reduction if
the sub-contractor is unable to complete the product within the specified time.
For the second option, we will provide the customer product using B-made bolts
after discussing with the sub-contractor such as the first option and the compensation
but not asking them to replace the B-made bolts with A-made bolts but asking them to
make tests and studies on B-made bolts. The test is to make sure it meets the
specifications of the product and to test the durability and safety of the material for
long-term use and that many people can use it well. This way can prevent the delay of
the product being set up. Our company will also try to talk to our customers about our
current problems and ask their goodwill to gladly accept their product using B-made
bolts part. But because we are not able to provide good service then we will give our
customers a discount on the product in return. We will also explain the product in all
aspects. The specifications of B-made bolts and A-made bolts are not significantly
different and are still safe and easy to use. If the sub-contractor is unable to provide
proof that the test has been performed on the B-made bolts then we will sue him and
report to the superior for their unethical behaviour.
After discussing it well with our group mates, we have unanimously chosen the
second option as the best and the best. This is because, the second option that may
not take the risk of delay is keeping our company in good standing. In particular,
customers are very much in need of the product within a short period of time, at a
predetermined date. Nor do we want to lose customers who may need our services
again in the future, so in the second way we will have a good experience with them
when we have a problem. We have also gained new experience in using other
materials to follow the product specifications set through several tests.
