UNIT TITLE: INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE AND NATURE OF MATTER


CONTENT STANDARDS
The learners demonstrate an understanding of…
 science, it branches, and applications;
 scientific ways of acquiring knowledge and solving problems;
 some important properties of solutions;
 the properties of substances that distinguish them from mixtures;
 classifying substances as elements or compounds;
 the common properties of acidic and basic mixtures and
 properties of metals and non-metals

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The learners shall be able to…
 conduct simple investigations using the inquiry approach;
 perform in groups in guided investigations involving community-based problems using locally available materials;
 prepare different concentrations of mixtures according to uses and availability of materials;
 investigate the properties of mixture of varying concentrations using available materials in the community for specific purposes;
 make a chart, poster or multimedia presentation of common elements showing their names, symbols and uses; and
 properly interpret product labels of acidic and basic mixture, and practice safe ways of handling acids and bases using protective
clothing and safety gear.

CONTENT STANDARDS
The learners demonstrates an understanding of…
 the parts and function of the compound microscope
 the different levels of biological organization;
 the difference between animal and plant cells;
 organism that can only be seen through the microscope, many of which consist of only one cell;
 reproduction of being asexual or sexual; and
 organisms interacting with their environment to survive.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The learners shall be able to…
 employ appropriate techniques using the compound microscope to gather data about very small objects;
 conduct a collaborative action to preserve the ecosystem in the locality;
 recognize that many organisms including human have systems that work together to carry out essential processes of the body; and
 engage in activities that promote proper nutrition and healthful habits to maintain proper functioning of the organ systems.
