• Physicist Thanu Padmanabhan received the M P Birla
Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of
cosmology.
• He is a professor of Inter-university Centre for Astronomy
and Astrophysics in Pune.
• The award was introduced in 1993 in recognition to the
excellence in research in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space
Science and related areas.
Greta Thunberg wins 'alternative Nobel Prize'
• Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg was
named as one of four winners of the 2019 Right Livelihood
Award, known as Sweden's alternative Nobel Prize.
• Thunberg won the award for inspiring and amplifying
political demands for urgent climate action reflecting
scientific facts.
• She shares the award with Brazilian indigenous leader Davi
Kopenawa of the Yanomami people.
CIAL won an international award
• Cochin International Airport Ltd has been selected as the
best airport in terms of services it offered to passengers,
based on a survey conducted by Airport Council
International (ACI).
• CIAL was emerged the topper in 5-15 million passenger
category among the airports in the Asia-Pacific region.
• It ranked amongst the best airports in the 5-15 mn
category in the Asia Pacific region for 2018.
National Tourism Awards 2017-18 presented
• Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu presented the National
Tourism Awards 2017-18 on World Tourism Day in New
Delhi on 27 September 2019.
• A total of 76 Awards under various categories were
presented.
• On this occasion, a workshop on ‘ Tourism Jobs of the
Future’ was also organized by UNWTO in collaboration
with its affiliate member in India, Outlook Responsible

Infosys bagged UN Global Climate Action Award
• Infosys has received the United Nations Global Climate
Action Award in the ‘Climate Neutral Now’ category.
• Infosys is the only corporate from India to earn the
recognition for its efforts to combat climate change.
• The announcement of the winners was made after the UN
Climate Summit in New York convened by UN Secretary-
General Antonio Guterres.

• She was awarded for her work towards the abolition of

National Water Mission Awards 2019 presented
• NWM, Department of Water Resources, River
Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti
has initiated the ‘National Water Mission Awards’ to
recognize excellence in water conservation, and efficient
water use.
• NWM has 5 goals and 39 strategies prescribed in the
Mission Document.
• The awards are given in 10 categories defined under
5 goals of NWM.
PT Usha honoured with IAAF Veteran Pin
• International Association of Athletic Federations,
(IAAF) honoured the Indian track and field legend PT Usha
with a Veteran Pin in recognition of her contribution to the
growth of the sport.
• IAAF chief Sebastian Coe presented her the Veteran Pin
during the 52nd IAAF Congress at Doha.
• At the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games, she won silver
medals in 100m and 200m events.
National unity award named after Sardar Patel
• The Centre has instituted the highest civilian award for
contribution to the unity and integrity of India, in the
name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
• The award seeks to recognize notable and inspiring
contributions to promote the cause of national unity and
integrity and to reinforce the value of a strong and united
India.
• The award will be announced on National Unity Day on
31 October 2019.
Ramanujan prize for U.K. mathematician
• The SASTRA Ramanujan prize for 2019 will be awarded to
Adam Harper.
• Mathematician Adam Harper is an Assistant Professor with
the University of Warwick, England.
• The prize is conferred annually on mathematicians from
across the world who are less than 32 years of age and
working in an area influenced by the genius Srinivasa
Ramanujan.
• The prize carries a citation and an award of $10,000.
Amitabh named for Dada Sahab Phalke award

• Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan has been named for the
prestigious Dada Sahab Phalke award for his outstanding
contribution to the film industry.
• The award is conferred by the Government for outstanding
contribution to the growth and development of Indian
Cinema.
• It consists of a Swarn Kamal and a cash prize of ten lakh
rupees.
PM Modi received Global Goalkeeper award
• PM Narendra Modi was conferred the "Global Goalkeeper"
award by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by his government.
• Over 11 crore toilets were built in the country in the last
five years, which is a record.
• The cleanliness campaign was launched by the Modi
government during its first term on October 2, 2014.
Messi won FIFA player of the year awards
• Lionel Messi won his 6th FIFA player of the year award,
while Megan Rapinoe won her first at Milan’s iconic Teatro
all Scala on 24 September 2019.
• Rapinoe was rewarded at the FIFA Best awards for leading
the US to the women’s World Cup title in July 2019.
• She scored six goals in the tournament, earning her the
Golden Boot for the tournament’s top scorer and the
Golden Ball as the top player.
71st Emmy Awards 2019 declared- I
• The 71st Emmy Awards were held in Los Angeles on 22
September 2019.
• Game of Thrones wrapped up its run with an Emmy for

• The award is in honour of the photographer and filmmaker
William Klein, best known for his unusual photography
techniques.
• The prize is intended to reward a photographer for their

• Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg and the
Fridays for Future youth movement received Amnesty
International’s ‘Ambassadors of Conscience’ award.
• The award was given for their work highlighting the need

• Best Debut Actor and Actress was given to Ishaan Khatter
for Dhadak and Sara Ali Khan for Kedarnath, respectively.
• Best Playback Singer was given to Arijit Singh, Harshdeep
Kaur, and Vibha Saraf.
• Saroj Khan was honoured for her Outstanding Contribution
to Indian Cinema.
• Best Story was awarded to the film Andhadhun.
• Best Lyrics was given to Amitabh Bhattacharya for Dhadak.

• The IIFA (The International Indian Film Academy Awards)
were held in Mumbai recently.
• Alia Bhatt received the Best Actor (Female) award for Raazi
and Ranveer Singh bagged the Best Actor (Male) Award
for 'Padmaavat'.
• Sriram Raghavan won Best Director for AndhaDhun.
• Best Supporting Actor and Actress was given to Vicky
Kaushal for Sanju and Aditi Rao Hydari for Padmaavat,
respectively.
National Geoscience Awards conferred

• The National Geoscience Awards for the year 2018 for
outstanding contributions in the field of geosciences,
mining and allied areas were presented to 22 scientists
from across the country.
• Prof. Syed Wajih Ahmad Naqvi, Council of Scientific and
Industrial Research (CSIR), received the Award for
Excellence.
• Dr Sohini Ganguly of Goa University was conferred with
the Young Scientist Award-2018.
Anand Kumar felicitated with an award
• Super 30 founder Anand Kumar was felicitated in the US
with Education Excellence Award 2019.
• The Foundation For Excellence (FFE) awarded him on the
occasion of the organisation’s 25th anniversary.
• Anand has been running a highly innovative Super 30

Gangwar gave away the Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar

• 28 awards were given for Vishvakarma Rashtriya Puruskar
while 81 winners bagged the National Safety awards.
• The Minister said, his ministry has planned to set up
regional offices of technical wing of the Ministry in

Neena Gupta won two awards
• Bollywood actress Neena Gupta has won 2 awards at
Indian International Film Festival of Boston.
• The actress won the Best Actress award for ‘Badhaai Ho‘
and her film ‘The Last Color‘ emerged victorious in Best
Feature Film category.
• ‘The Last Color’ was directed by chef Vikas Khanna.
• The film deals with taboo surrounding widows in
Vrindavan and Varanasi in India.
Agnes Kharshiing conferred Hrant Dink Award
• Meghalaya-based rights activist Agnes Kharshiing, who
survived an assault by the coal mafia almost a year ago,
received the 11th International Hrant Dink Award.
• She received the award along with Turkish activist against
male violence, Nebahat Akkoc.
• The Hrant Dink Award is presented every year to
individuals, or groups that work for a world free from
discrimination, racism and violence.
IIFA comes home with first ceremony in India
• The international Indian film academy awards are to be
held in India for the first time in their history.
• Mumbai will host the 20th IIFA awards ceremony on 18
September 2019.

Bangladesh School project wins Aga Khan Award
• An innovative project for constructing a floating school for
marginalised children in Bangladesh has been awarded the
prestigious Aga Khan Architecture Award 2019.
• The award was given to the Republic of Tatarstan for the
Arcadia Education Project in South Kanarchor of
Bangladesh.
• The project involved the construction of a school in an
area which is underwater during the monsoon months.
5 Indian women police officers honoured by UN
• 5 Indian women police officers were honoured by the
United Nations for their commendable services in UN
mission in South Sudan.
• These are Reena Yadav, Gopika Jahagirdar, Bharati
Samantray, Ragini Kumari, and Kamal Shekhawat.

Govt notifies e-assessment process

• The central government has notified the ambitious e-
assessment scheme also called the faceless assessment for
income-tax payers.
• The centre will serve notices to the assessees specifying
the issues for selection of their case for assessment and
after a response is received from them within 15 days, the
centre will allocate the case to an assessing officer using
an automated system.
Odd-even scheme to be implemented in Delhi
• Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announced that odd-even road
rationing scheme will be implemented in Delhi from
November 4 to 15, 2019.
• The move was aimed at combating high levels of air
pollution in winters when crop stubble burning takes place
in neighbouring states.
• Under the scheme, odd and even-numbered vehicles ply
on alternate days. Delhi has earlier also experimented with
Odd-Even plan.
Maritime communication services launched
• Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and
Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad launched
maritime communication services.
• He also launched a web portal for reporting stolen mobiles
to help trace them.
• Maritime connectivity will enable high-end support to
those travelling on sailing vessels, cruise liners and ships in
India.
Haryana launched two insurance schemes
• The State government of Haryana launched 2 insurance
schemes for registered small and medium traders.
• The schemes are Mukhyamantri Vyapari Samuhik Niji
Durghatna Beema Yojana and Mukhyamantri Vyapari
Kshatipurti Beema Yojana“.
• An insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh would be provided under
the former one.
• An insurance cover ranging from Rs 5 lakh-Rs 25 lakh
would be provided under the latter one.
CHC Farm Machinery App launched
• Minister of State for Agriculture, Parshottam Rupala has
launched a multilingual Mobile App CHC Farm Machinery
during a conference on Crop Residue Management in New
Delhi.
• The app will allow farmers to avail custom hiring services
of CHCs located in a radius of 50 km.
• With the help of it, the farmers will now be able to get
affordable access to cutting-edge technology at their
doorsteps.

• IIT Kharagpur has been selected for setting up a
Sophisticated Analytical and Technical Help Institute
(SATHI), a Department of Science and Technology initiative
of the Centre, for which Rs 125 crore has been earmarked
over a period of three years.
• The primary objective of the SATHI will be to extend help
to the academic institutes in the neighbouring regions.
Govt launches updated CLSS Scheme
• The government of India launched the updated Credit
linked Capital Subsidy Scheme (CLCSS) to allow micro,
small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) access to capital.
• The scheme provides an upfront subsidy of 15% on
institutional credit up to Rs 1 crore for MSMEs in the
specified 51 sub-sectors.
• The government will also prepare a final report on the
recommendations of the U K Sinha committee.
First Mega Food Park in Telangana
• Union Minister of Food Processing Industries, Smt.
Harsimrat Kaur Badal inaugurated the first Mega Food
Park in Telangana.
• It is situated at Village Lakkampally, Nandipet Mandal of
Nizamabad District, Telangana.
• Mega Food Park is a scheme to establish a direct linkage
from farm to processing and then to consumer
markets through a network of collection centres and
primary processing centres.
UDAN regional connectivity scheme launched
• Hisar, Haryana has entered into the civil aviation map after
the launch of the air shuttle service between Hisar and
Chandigarh.
• SpiceJet has started the air shuttle service between Hisar
and Chandigarh under the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik
(UDAN) Regional Connectivity Service scheme.

• SpiceJet would provide the service of two flights between
Hisar and Chandigarh daily.
Electors Verification Programme launched
• The Election Commission launched a new mega Electors
Verification Programme across the country.

• The National Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA) has launched a miniature satellite designed by

• The satellite is named 'RamanSat 2' and measures 4 cm x 4
cm x 4 cm.
• The satellite is made to measure radiation from the sun
and space reaching the Earth.
The Second Interstellar Object detected
• The second interstellar object has been officially detected
in the Solar System.
• According to the International Astronomical Union (IAU),
the comet is 'unambiguously' interstellar in origin, and it
has now been given a name: 2I/Borisov.
• In 2I, I stands for 'interstellar', and 2 for being the second
interstellar object ever discovered, after 'Oumuamua,
which was detected in October 2017.
World's Biggest Amphibian discovered
• A newly-identified amphibian is possibly the world's
biggest, new research of museum specimens shows.
• According to Phys.org, researchers from the Zoological
Society of London (ZSL) and London's Natural History
Museum identified new species of giant salamander using
DNA from museum specimens.
• The species that is probably the largest has now been
given a new name: Andrias sligoi.
Astronomers discover water vapor in atmosphere

Cryodrakon boreas: The largest flying animal
• Scientists have unveiled a newly discovered species of a
pterosaur, the largest ever flying animal according to a
study conducted by Queen Mary University in London.
• These species come from the Azhdarchid group of
pterosaurs.
• The pterosaur’s name Cryodrakon boreas roughly
translates to ‘frozen dragon of the north wind’.
India to launch deep sea research project
• India will launch ‘Samudrayaan’ project in 2021-22.
• The project proposes to send a submersible vehicle with
three persons to a depth of about 6000 metres to carry
out deep underwater studies.
• The vehicle is capable of crawling on the sea bed at a
depth of six-kilometre for 72 hours.

Lander Vikram lost its communication
• The lander of the lunar craft Chandrayaan 2 went
incommunicado just minutes before its planned soft
landing near the moon's South Pole on 7 September 2019.
• Vikram Lander descent was initiated as planned and
normal performance was observed up to an altitude of 2.1
km.
• Subsequently, the communication from the Lander to the
ground stations was lost.
• The data is being analyzed.
NASA and the European Space Agency to meet
• NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) will meet in
Rome to discuss their plan for planetary defence against
asteroids.
• The two-part mission dubbed Asteroid Impact Deflection
Assessment plans to collide with Asteroid Didymoon- the
smaller of the Didymo's binary system.
• NASA is in charge of conducting the actual impact while
ESA will analye the aftermath.
World's First iPS Corneal Transplant
• A Japanese woman has become the first person ever to
receive an iPS corneal transplant.

• In an incredible feat of medical advancement, a team from
Osaka University in Japan conducted the first-ever corneal
transplant in July, using reprogrammed stem cells.
• The woman, who is in her forties, was suffering from
corneal epithelial stem cell deficiency, which can lead to
blindness.
Malaria linked to 30% risk of heart failure
• Malaria infection is linked to 30 per cent higher risk of
heart failure, a new research has warned.
• The mosquito-borne infection affects more than 219
million people worldwide each year, according to the 2018
statistics of the World Health Organization (WHO).
• Malaria can also affect vascular pathways that cause
inflammation in the heart, which could lead to fibrosis and
then heart failure.
Carbon nanotube computer chip developed
• Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT) have developed the biggest-ever computer chip
using carbon nanotubes (CNT).
• The RV16XNano is a 16-bit processor that contains 14,000
transistors — electronic switches.
• These switches are made up of CNT — tiny cylinders made
of rolled-up, atom-thick sheets of graphene.

Government constitutes a task force
• The central government has set up a task force to draw up
plans for building infrastructure worth Rs 100 lakh
crore over the next five years.
• The task force under the chairmanship of Secretary (DEA)
has been constituted to draw up a 'national infrastructure
pipeline' from 2019-20 to 2024-25.
• The national infrastructure pipeline project would include
greenfield and brownfield projects.

RBI places Lakshmi Vilas Bank under PCA
• The Reserve Bank of India has placed the Laxmi Vilas bank
under its prompt corrective action (PCA) framework.
• Under PCA, banks are mandated to cut lending to
corporates and focus on reducing the concentration of
loans to certain sectors.
• They are also restricted from opening new branches and
paying dividends.
Facebook to invest in tech start-ups in India
• Facebook will make substantial investments in technology
start-ups in India.
• Around 1.95 start-ups are getting registered every hour in
the country.
• There are 22,895 registered start-ups in the country as per
the records till September 2019.
• Around 45 per cent of start-ups have come from tier-2 and
tier-3 cities.
• About 9 to 10 per cent start-ups have women as founders.
SEBI penalised Aurobindo Pharma
• SEBI has imposed a penalty of over Rs 22 crore on
Aurobindo Pharma and its promoters.

• They have been penalised for violating insider trading
norms.
• The regulator had conducted an investigation into the
trading in the scrip of Aurobindo Pharma Ltd.
• SEBI found that these entities purchased shares while in
possession of the UPSI pertaining to Aurobindo, and made
unlawful gains.
RBI tightens norms for failed transactions
• The Reserve Bank of India prescribed a turnaround time
(TAT) for banks to settle failed transactions for customers
and also notified compensations payable for various types
of customer complaints.
• The timeline for auto-reversal has been set at between
one day after the transaction to five days.
• Most financial compensations have been set at ₹100 per
day if the reversal does not happen.
Govt waives lock in period for IDF bonds
• The government of India has waived the three-year lock-in
period on investments made by non-residents in
Infrastructure Debt Funds (IDFs), to promote funding in
the infrastructure sector.
• To attract off-shore investments into IDFs, any amount of
interest received by non-resident or foreign company from
investment in such IDFs is charged at a reduced tax rate of
5%.
UAE tops in investments by non-residents
• According to the Reserve Bank of India’s, ‘Survey of
Foreign Liabilities and Assets of Mutual Fund Companies,
2018-19’, Non-residents’ (NRIs’) investments in Indian
mutual funds are up by nearly a tenth and is now
approaching Rs 1 trillion.
• The UAE, the UK and the US were the largest investors
together accounting for one-third of the MF units.
OECD slashes India's economic growth
• The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development (OECD) has projected the Indian economy to
grow by 6.3%.
• The OECD predicted that the global economy will see its
weakest growth since the 2008-2009 financial crisis,
slowing from 3.6% last year to 2.9% this year.
• The OECD's growth forecast, however, is higher than 5.5
per cent in 2012-13
8.65% interest rate for EPFO members
• Government has approved 8.65% interest rate on deposits
in Employees Provident Fund for 2018-19.
• Ministry of Labour and Employment has notified
8.65% rate of interest on EPF deposits for its over six crore
subscribers.
• The EPFO has been settling EPF withdrawal claims at
8.55% interest rate, approved for 2017-18.

Scope of Bharat Bill Payment System expanded
• The RBI has expanded the scope of the Bharat Bill Payment
System (BBPS) by adding other categories of recurring
payments through the portal.
• BBPS is an interoperable platform that enables a customer
to pay bills such as telephone, water, gas, at a single
location.
• With the expansion of the scope of the payment facility,
other recurring payments such as school fees can also be
paid via BBPS.
RBI increases banks' loan exposure limit
• The RBI increased loan exposure limit of banks to a
single Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) - excluding
gold loan companies - from 15% to 20% of its capital base.
• This move will help increase credit supply to the crisis-
ridden shadow banking sector.
• NBFC are establishments that provide financial services
and banking facilities without meeting the legal definition
of a Bank.
FDI grows to $16.33 bn in Q1 FY20
• According to government data, Foreign direct investment
into India grew by 28% to $16.33 billion during the first
quarter of the current fiscal.
• The inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) during April-
June of 2018-19 stood at 12.75 billion.
• Singapore emerged as the largest source of FDI in India
during the first quarter of the fiscal with $5.33 billion
investments.
MCX and Zhengzhou Exchange sign MoU
• The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and
Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (ZCE), one of the leading
commodity exchanges in China, have signed an MoU.
• The MoU will facilitate cooperation between the two
exchanges in areas such as knowledge sharing, education
& training, organizing events.
• MCX offers commodity futures contracts in bullion, base
metal, energy and agricultural commodities.
Standard Chartered launched DigiSmart card
• Standard Chartered Bank has launched a DigiSmart credit
card that is focussed on millennials.
• The card is available for a monthly fee of ₹49, which will,
however, be waived off if the customer spends more than
₹5,000 in the previous month.
• In the initial phase, Standard Chartered has partnered with
marquee brands such as Myntra, Grofers, Yatra, Zomato,

UPI Transactions jumped 6 Times In 2018-19

• UPI or Unified Payments Interface transactions surged
nearly six times in the year to June 30, 2019.
• In value terms, UPI transactions soared nearly eight times
during the year, according to RBI data.
• Instant payment system UPI is developed by the National
Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which is regulated
by the Reserve Bank of India.
Equitas SFB misses RBI mandate of listing
• Equitas Small Finance Bank (SFB), which completed three
years of operations on 4 September 2019, has missed its
listing timeline.
• Equitas Financial Holdings, which owns 100% stake in
Equitas SFB — is a listed entity, the RBI rules mandate that
the SFB be listed separately within three years of launch of
business.
• Equitas SFB, the first such bank, began operations on
September 5, 2016.
India to go ahead with $3.1 billion US deal
• India is set to go ahead with a $3.1-billion deal with the US
to acquire maritime aircraft for the Navy that will add to
its surveillance capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.
• The procurement of 10 Boeing P8I maritime patrol aircraft
is likely to be cleared at a key acquisition meeting.
• The deal will include a mandatory clause for at least 30%
offsets to domestic companies.
Crisil lowers India's GDP growth forecast
• Crisil cut India's GDP growth forecast to 6.3 per cent for
fiscal year 2020 from its earlier forecast of 6.9 per cent.
• This comes after the GDP growth was at its slowest in
almost 6 years and grew only at 5 per cent in the first
quarter.
• Earlier, Moody's too had revised India's GDP growth
forecast for the current year to 6.2 per cent.
Banks to link lending rate to ext benchmark
• The RBI made it mandatory for banks to link their retail
and MSME loans to external interest rate benchmarks.
• Home, car and personal loans for travel are expected to
fall benefiting borrowers.
• This new norm will be effective October 1 where banks
have to migrate from the Marginal Cost of Lending Rate
regime to external benchmarking and will have the
freedom to choose which one to follow.
B K Modi launched OCI investment platform
• Businessman B K Modi announced the setting of an
Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Investment Forum with a
proposed fund size of $100 billion.
• As its first project, the OCI investor forum will undertake
investment in the region of Kashmir to develop 100 Global
Wellness Hotels in Kashmir.

PAN for people filing ITR with Aadhaar
• The Income Tax Department will automatically issue PAN
to a taxpayer using Aadhaar number for filing returns as
part of a new arrangement to link the two databases.
• A person who furnishes Aadhaar, as they do not have PAN,
shall be deemed to have applied for allotment of PAN and
they will not be required to apply or submit any more
documents.
• The rule has come into effect from Sept. 1, 2019.
RBI panel recommended self-regulatory agency
• A task force set up by the RBI submitted its report on the
development of a secondary market for corporate loans
on 3 September 2019.
• The task force headed by Canara Bank chairman T.N.
Manoharan recommended setting up of a self-regulatory
body (SRB).
• The SRB may be set up as an association by scheduled
commercial banks, public financial institutions.
IRDAI sets up single point of contact for RS
• Insurance regulator, IRDAI has set up a single point contact
for its Regulatory Sandbox (RS) initiative.
• Now financial technology firms can seek permission to
experiment with innovative approaches for the growth of
the sector.
• Regulatory sandbox (RS) usually refers to live testing of
new products or services in a controlled/test regulatory
environment.
RBI releases annual report
• According to the RBI's Annual Report, the Reserve Bank of
India's (RBI) balance sheet expanded by 13.42% to Rs
41.03 lakh crore while its income soared by 146.59% to Rs
1.93 lakh crore in 2018-19.
• Interest income grew 44.62% to Rs 1.06 lakh crore.
• The RBI's holding of government securities grew by
57.19%.
Samsung India ties up with Mastercard
• Mastercard, RBL Bank and Samsung India have announced
the launch of Samsung Pay for RBL Bank’s credit
cardholders.
• The partnership will allow RBL Bank Mastercard credit
cardholders to make contactless mobile payments using
their Samsung Pay-enabled phones.
• These payments can be made via any PoS (Point of Sale)
machine where a card can be dipped, swiped or tapped,
both in India and abroad.
NPCI caps BHIM UPI discount rate

• To drive digital payments in both small and large
merchants’ transactions, the National Payments
Corporation of India (NPCI) said the BHIM UPI merchant
discount rate (MDR) for large ticket transactions has been
capped at a maximum of Rs 100 and made zero at offline
merchants for transactions up to Rs 100.
• Currently, MDR is capped at 0.25% for transactions up to
Rs 2000.
GDP growth at 5% in Q1 FY20
• India’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth slumped
to a 25-quarter low of 5% in Q1 FY20.
• The slowdown in investment and consumer demand
derailed manufacturing, which grew just 0.6%.
• A meagre 2% rise in farm sector added to the demand
slowdown.
• Private Consumption collapsed to an 18-quarter low of
3.1% from 10.6% in the March quarter.
TDS on cash withdrawal above ₹1 crore
• The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said that the
2% tax deduction at source (TDS) on cash withdrawals of
over Rs 1 crore will come into effect from 1 September
2019.
• The government had made the provision of levying 2 per
cent TDS on cash withdrawals exceeding Rs 1 crore in the
Union Budget with an aim to discourage cash transactions
and move towards a less-cash economy.

Gujarat government reduced traffic fine
• The Gujarat government reduced fine amounts stipulated
in the new Motor Vehicles Act passed recently.
• The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill 2019 was passed by
Parliament in July and its steep fines were to come into
effect from 1 September 2019.
• The penalty for driving without a licence has been brought
down from ₹5,000 to ₹2000 for two-wheelers and ₹3000
for four-wheelers.
UP govt announced Agriculture Export policy
• Uttar Pradesh Government has announced it's maiden
Agriculture Export policy, 2019.
• The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting on 10

• In Bihar, the campaign against single used plastic began on

• Under this campaign, single used plastic will be collected
at ward level and it will be sent to collection centres of
local bodies for recycling.
MP: 313 Anganwadi centres developed
• In Madhya Pradesh, 313 Anganwadi centres have been
developed as Child Education Centre under Rashtriya
Poshan Maah - National Nutritional Campaign.
• These centres are now providing primary education along
with distribution of nutritious food.
• 27 thousand smartphones have also been provided in the
state for monitoring of nutritional food distribution in
Anganwadi centres.
J&K: 85,000 LPG refills distributed
• In Jammu and Kashmir, 85,000 LPG refills have been
distributed through home-deliveries to consumers in
Srinagar in last three weeks.
• The number includes 60,000 refills distributed in the last
two weeks of August and 25,000 distributed in the first
week of September 2019.
• Moreover, since September 1 around 50 thousand quintals
of rice has been distributed among consumers in Srinagar.
Centre set up 3-member panel
• Centre has set up a three-member panel to oversee the
bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union
Territories.
• The committee will look into the distribution of assets and
liabilities of Jammu and Kashmir between two successor
Union territories, which will come into existence on 31
October 2019.
• The committee will be headed by Former Defence

• The Legislative Assembly will be formed in J&K as UT but

• 108 Central Laws will be applicable on the two UTs while
164 State laws will be repealed and 166 State laws will

World Bank to fund tourism projects in UP
• World Bank will fund ‘pro-poor tourism’ (PPT)
development projects worth more than $57 million in top
tourist hotspots of Agra and Braj-Mathura regions in Uttar
Pradesh.
• While the World Bank will incur 70% of the project cost,
the remaining 30% will be borne by the UP government.
• Pro-poor tourism is a holistic tourism concept aimed at

CGHS services to be available in 100 cities
• Health Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan launched a new
scheme of Annual Health Check-up for Central government
health schemes (CGHS) beneficiaries who are pensioners
of the age of 75 years and above.
• He also inaugurated state-of-the-art CGHS Bhawan in New
Delhi.
• The CGHS services will be available in 100 cities by 2022.
• The CGHS services were started in 1954 in Delhi.

• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Tokyo for a
bilateral visit. As part of his visit to Japan, he is going to
chair the Annual Defence Ministerial Dialogue with Takeshi
Iwaya, Minister of Defence of Japan.
