Message from our Superintendent
September 5, 2019

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!

District 22 continues to show increases in both ELA and Math

performance and student progress. This year, we have initiatives
that include “Algebra for All” whereby grade five students are
taught math by a teacher who has received intensive training in
the teaching of Algebra. With this initiative, our students will be
better prepared to take Algebra in middle school and beyond.

As a district, we are paying close attention to the “social issues”

that face our students including the “internet and bullying” We
have planned many workshops for parents to support us in solving
this increasing problem. Please be an engaged parent/guardian
and participate in all of the planned meetings and events at your
school through the parents’ association. Continue to check the
District website, social media, and attend Community Education
Council (CEC) Meetings.

I wish you and your family a successful and healthy year,

Julia Bove

For all of us at the NYC Department of Education (DOE), safety is of the utmost importance when it
comes to our public schools and the 1.1 million students we serve. This is why every City school
has readiness plans in place to address various school-related emergencies as they arise. We want
all City students to know that they, too, play a huge role in protecting their schools. What role?
Simple: “If you know something, say something.” Students: if you are aware of a threat, don’t keep
it to yourself—find help. Tell a trusted adult. Call 311 (or 911 for immediate emergencies). Know of
an ongoing bullying and/or harassment occurring at your school? Use our bullying report form and
help end it. Let’s work together to ensure everyone feels secure, supported, and respected in City
public schools. On behalf of the DOE, we thank the New York Police Department, our teachers
and administrators, and our vigilant students for all that they do to keep our schools safe.

IS 278: On July 31th and August 7th, Marine Park JHS 278 welcomed in their new 6th grade class
with an opportunity to participate in their annual, “6th Grade Day of Fun.” Students were invited to
come to school and meet their new classmates, teachers, assistant principal, and principal.
Students were divided into teams, with each child receiving a Marine Park I.S. 278 Class of 2022 t-
shirt in the color of their team. This day allowed the incoming 6th graders to become familiar with
the Marine Park environment, as well as make new friends! Students were able to connect with
each other and their teachers socially and emotionally. With approximately 100 students coming
to each day that was offered, students were able to start school knowing more familiar faces; not
just faces of their peers, but faces of their teachers too. Marine Park’s “6th Grade Day of Fun”
gave the students just a small glimpse into what it feels like to find your “home” within a school
building.

IS 78: We are excited to announce our new Band Room which opened in September!
