1. Introduction
Thank you for purchasing WipAir 8000 solution. WaveIP's WipAir series is a carrier-
grade point-to-point and Point-to-multipoint broadband wireless solution that sets a
benchmark of unrivaled performance, reliability, capacity, latency and RF robustness,
making it the ultimate choice for future-proof wireless system.

1.1 Applications

Point-to-Point (PTP):
The basic subsystem is composed of a Master Unit (MU) and a Slave Unit (SU).
Typical applications:
• IP data backhaul of:
o WiMAX/LTE operators
o Metro WiFi Networks
o Cellular and 3G
• Video surveillance networks
• Multi-hop solutions

Point-to-Multipoint (PTMP):
The basic subsystem is composed of one Master Unit (MU) and multiple Slave Units
(SUs). Typical applications:
• Multiple backhauls solutions
• IP video surveillance and security networks
• Business grade wireless access
• Backbone for Metro WiFi Networks
• High bandwidth campus solutions

1.2 Technical overview

WipAir models:

• WipAir 8000 ACE PTP - up to 1000 Mbps net throughput


• WipAir 8000 MIMO PTP/PTMP - up to 310 Mbps net throughput

• Scalability and flexibility – WipAir scalable design allows software upgrades


between models:
o PTP radio -> PTMP SU (and vice versa).
o PTP radio / PTMP SU -> PTMP sector.
o Capacity upgrades - 5Mbps -> 310Mbps.

• Real time synchronization – WipAir’s built in time synchronization


technology allows collocation of unlimited number of wireless units on the
same mast and on collocated masts while reusing frequencies and eliminating
self-interference between them. WipAir supports full time synchronization
capabilities:
o Internal – synchronizing units collocated on the same tower via a
configurable master unit (no additional hardware required).
o External – synchronizing towers located at the same area via GPS.
o Unlimited – practically no limit of synchronized units using any
method (internal or external).

Time synchronization advantages:


o Eliminates self-interference between MUs.
o Supports all radio types and modes (PTP/PTMP).
o Synchronizes unlimited number of radios and towers.
o Allows frequency reuse for most efficient spectrum utilization.
o Supports ‘Cellular-like’ approach and most dense deployments.

Without time synchronization, one MU will transmit while the other MU receives. The
transmittion of the first MU will block the reception of the second MU since they are
close to each other (can even occur when the MUs are on different channels).

Time synchronization synchronizes the transmission and reception of all MUs, thus
eliminating self interference between them and allowing better frequency reuse.

WipAir supports ‘over-the-air’ remote management via:


• ViewAir NMS – manages the entire PTP and PTMP deployment from a single
point of management.
• Link Manager – configuration and monitoring per link.
• WEB interface.
• Telnet.
• SNMP.

1.3.1 NMS
ViewAir NMS, WipAir Network Management system provides one point of management
for the entire deployment allowing the operator to monitor and control the units:

1.3.2 Link Manager


In a technician level, The Link Manager provides a complete GUI system to monitor
the radio.
The Link Manager automatically discovers WipAir units and allows the technician to
monitor the radio in a fast and effective way.

WaveIP WEB provides advanced capabilities and powerful analytics for configuration
and monitoring of WipAir units.
WipAir WEB interface is managed from any computer, operating system and even
Smartphones.

1.3.4 Standard protocols


WipAir supports the following protocols:
• SNMP – Supports v2c and secure v3 with a private MIB, traps and
notifications.
• Telnet.

2. Installation
Deploy WipAir link in your office using the following scheme.

2.1 Connecting all together


1. Connecting the MU and SU to power - Connect the MU and SU to power as
detailed in WipAir Installation Guide.
2. Connecting the units to PCs - Connect the units to their corresponding
computer as indicated in figure 11.

                  


IMPORTANT! On lab/office tests of links with external antennas, connection
should be done via the antennas. In case direct connection is
required (with RF cables), make sure to have a minimum of
50dB attenuation on the RF cables to avoid any damage to the
radios.

3. Point-to-Point - Quick Configuration


WipAir link is pre-configured. Once the units are powered, there will be connectivity
between the 2 PCs.
The following section details the basic step-by-step configuration of the Point-to-Point
link.

3.1 WipAir MU configuration


WipAir MU (Master Unit) holds the main link configuration including data rates, time
synchronization, DFS master, adaptive modulation, etc.
Log in to WipAir MU WEB interface using its default IP - 10.50.1.1.*
Configure the following parameters of the MU:

1. Unit information table:


o Configure the MU ID (recommended value – same as the MU MAC
address).
2. Network tab:
o Configure the MU’s management IP.
3. Configuration tab:
o Configure the SU MAC address – this is the MAC address of the
associated SU.
4. Press ‘submit’ to save changes.

* In case the unit's IP is unknown, use the Link Manager tool to discover the IP address of the unit. See
more details in section 3.3.

3.2 WipAir SU configuration


Log in to WipAir SU WEB interface using its default IP - 10.50.1.2.*
Configure the following parameters of the MU:

1. Unit information table:


o Configure the MU ID – the value must be identical to the MU ID
configured in the MU WEB.
2. Network tab:
o Configure the SU’s management IP.
3. Radio tab:
o Make sure the following configuration is identical for the MU and SU:
a. Band (frequency band)
b. AES mode and pre-shared key.
c. Channel BW.
d. Diversity mode.
o Channel scan – make sure the SU is set to scan all channel.
4. Press ‘submit’ to save changes.

* In case the unit's IP is unknown, use the Link Manager tool to discover the IP address of the unit. See
more details in section 3.3.

3.3 Discovering unit's IP address


The Link Manager tool is used to discover a unit's IP address when it is unknown.
1. Run the LinkMgrInst_vx_xxxx.exe installation program and follow the
instructions.
2. Open the Link Manager program and go to Tools->select adapter. Select the IP
of the network adapter connected to the unit.
3. Activate the Link Manager, and click the ‘S’ button in order to connect to the
unit and view its IP address.

3.4 Checking the setup


Make sure to provide some distance between the units - align the antennas in a way
that keeps the RSSI level below –40 dBm. The RSSI level is shown in the Monitoring
tab (or in the Link Manager Installation window).

From the MU PC issue the command ping x.x.x.x –t, where x.x.x.x is the IP of the
PC behind the SU. Make sure both PCs are on the same subnet, for example:
10.1.1.10/24 and 10.1.1.20/24.

4.1 Introduction

WaveIP secured WEB provides advanced capabilities and powerful analytics for
configuration and monitoring of WipAir units.

WipAir WEB interface is managed from any computer, operating system and even
Smartphones.

4.2 Login

Activate your browser – The WEB interface is based on HTML5 and support the
following browsers:
• Firefox version 7 and above.
• Chrome version 12 and above.
• IE version 8 (requires chrome frame plug-in that is downloaded automatically).
• Any other browser that implement HTML5 and web sockets version 13 and
above.

Browse for the unit’s IP – the WEB login screen will appear.

Parameter Description
Name Display unit’s name.
IP Display unit’s IP address.
MAC Display unit’s MAC address.
User Select operator privilege:
• Admin – allows unit’s monitoring and configuration.
• User – allows monitoring only.
Password Enter password.
Login Press to login to the unit’s WEB.

4.3 Unit Information


After successful login, the unit’s information is displayed.

Parameter Description
Title The title displays unit’s information including:
• Model and frequency.
• IP address.
• MAC address.
Name Display/configure unit’s name.
Name is limited to 30 chars and may not include ‘,’ or ‘*’.
MU ID A string of hexadecimal digits, which identifies the MU to its SUs.
The MU ID configuration must be identical for both SU and MU.
Firmware Display unit’s active firmware.
License Display unit’s license. License information:
o X Mbps SU – displays the max net capacity supported by the unit.
o MU/SU – display unit type – Master Unit or Slave Unit.
o MU licenses:
1. PTP – supports 1 SU.
2. PTMP – supports multiple SUs.
Refresh Refresh unit’s parameters.
Submit Submit the configuration to the unit.
Log out Log out from the WEB interface.
Reset unit Send reset command to the unit.

4.4 Monitoring Tab


The monitoring tab displays radio status.

Parameter Description
Name Display SU name.
MAC Display SU MAC address.
IP Display SU IP address (relevant only if the SU is online).
Rate [DL-UL] The rate is color coded, indicating SU status:
• Green – SU online, current DL and UL modulations are displayed.
• Red – SU offline.
RSSI DL The received signal strength (RSSI) measured in dBm by the SU
(Downlink direction).
RSSI UL The received signal strength (RSSI) measured in dBm by the MU (Uplink
direction).
PER DL The packet error rate (PER) of the downlink direction.
PER UL The packet error rate (PER) of the uplink direction
Firmware Displays the active firmware version of the SU.
Available Displays the available net aggregate throughput, taking into account all
throughput current link parameters.
Radio status Displays current radio parameters (band, channel, channel bandwidth,
MIMO, diversity and Tx power).
Ethernet ports Displays Ethernet status - active port, speed, duplex , flow control and
status Rx CRC.
Counters Displays Tx/Rx traffic counters, CRC errors, ARQ counters and frame
loss (drop) counter.

4.5 Configuration Tab


The configuration tab is active at the MU only for configuration of SU parameters.

Parameter Description Notes


Status Configure SU status:
• Online – SU is authorized and may be
registered be the MU.
• Offline – SU is not authorized and will not
register with the MU.
• Delete – Select to delete the SU (SU will
be deleted after ‘Submit MU’ operation).
Name Configure SU name. Name is limited to 30
chars and may not
include ‘,’ or ‘*’.
MAC Configure SU MAC address. Each SU must have
different MAC address.
DL rate / UL rate Select the SU downlink and uplink rates: Recommended value –
• Auto - adaptive modulation mode. Auto (adaptive

VLAN filter modes.

4.5.1 Network modes

Each SU is configured to operate in one of the following network modes:


• Bridge – transparent L2.
• Broadcast filter – bridge mode with broadcast filter (broadcast packets will be
discarded).
• VLAN – VLAN mode. The SU will tag/untag packets with data tag.
• QinQ / VLAN filter:
o VLAN filter – default mode (QinQ is disabled by default). The SU support
data VLAN (tag/untag packets with data tag) and also pass two other VLAN
tags without tagging/untagging (transparent L2).
o QinQ – Enabled when ‘Enable QinQ’ mode is selected in the MU ‘Network
Tab’. For more information, please refer to ‘Network Tab’ section.

4.5.2 VLAN

VLAN configuration is relevant for the following network modes:


• VLAN.
• VLAN filter.

VLAN mode includes a single data tag that will be tagged/untagged by the SU.
Packets with different tag will be discarded.

SU1 (Figure 7) will tag/untag packets with data tag 100.

VLAN filter mode


VLAN filter mode includes up to 3 tags, separated with (.).
• First tag – data tag that will be tagged/untagged by the SU.
• Second and third tags – will pass transparently via the link (not filtered, not
tagged/untagged).

SU2 (Figure 7) will tag/untag packets with data tag 200 and will pass data tags 300 &
400 (without tagging untagging).

4.7.1 QinQ sub-system

The QinQ sub-system injects two tags for outgoing packets (from the radios into the
ISP WAN), or strips two tags from incoming packets (coming from the WAN into the
radio and forwarded to the users).

The inner tag (the closest to the payload) is the customer tag (ctag - 802.1q tag).
The outer tag, which is the ISP service tag (stag - QinQ tag).

4.7.1.1 The inner tag - customer tag (ctag)


Each SU can have its own ctag (several SUs can share the same ctag).
The network administrator (admin) can set the customer tag, by selecting the SU
network mode to ‘QinQ/VLAN Filter’ and configure the desired data tag (0-4095).

4.7.1.2 The outer tag - service tag (stag)


An MU can have only one stag, which is shared by all SUs connected to this MU.
The stag is composed of:
• QinQ Type - there are 3 basic types, which are specified as a 4 digits hex number:
o Stacked VLAN - 8100.
o 'Old QinQ' - 9100.
o 802.1ad – 88A8.
• Service tag - between 0-4095.
• Service tag priority - between 0-7.

4.7.2 Layer 3 routing (SU only)

requests to an external DHCP server.
Relay CircuitID Configure according to the required DHCP relay parameters (DHCP

The Administration tab is used to load new passwords, firmware or license to WipAir
unit. This window also allows the operator to export radio's configuration and import a
configuration file.

Passwords
• Set the “Administrator” password for Admin login.
• Set the “User” password for User login.
• Default passwords are blank.

Firmware update
WipAir unit includes 2 firmware banks - Active and Alternate.
On firmware upgrade, the new firmware file is loaded to the alternate bank. After
successful upgrade, the operator switch between the banks (the alternate bank
becomes active and the active bank is now the alternate bank).
• Browse for the firmware file (*.brn). The firmware details will automatically
appear.
• Press ‘Submit’ to load the firmware into the alternate bank.
• After successful upgrade, the firmware details will be displayed in the alternate
bank.
• Press ‘Switch banks’ to switch between the active and alternate banks. The
unit will automatically reboot.

License upgrade
• Browse for the license file (*.brn). The MAC addresses that are included in the
file will automatically appear in a list.
• Press ‘Submit’. The unit will automatically reboot after.

Configuration backup
• Export – save the radio's configuration into a file.
• Import - browse for a saved configuration file (*.wip) to update the radio
configuration according to the saved data.

5. Link Manager
5.1 General
The Link Manager is a technician tool used for monitoring WipAir units (MU or SU).

The Link Manager has the ability to discover WipAir units even when the IP address is
unknown, and allows monitoring of one unit at a time.

5.2 Activating the Link Manager


Activate the Link Manager.
When you first activate the Link Manager the following window appears:

5.3 Selecting the network interface


If there is more than one Network Interface Card (NIC) on the PC, select the default
adapter used by the Link Manager (Tools Select Adapter). The selected network
interface is saved in the application configuration file.
If a router separates the computer and units, configure the PC’s default gateway.

5.4 Logging into the unit

There are two options to login into WipAir unit:


• If the IP address of the unit is unknown, press the icon “S” to start a new session.
This command discovers the units on the network (using a broadcast command)
and displays them in a list.

Select one of the units from the list, select a Login User privilege (USER or
ADMIN) and type the corresponding password (the default passwords are blank).
The Login settings can be saved in the application configuration file by checking
the Remember Settings Checkbox. Finally, press the Login button to start a
session with the selected unit. The unit configuration is retrieved and displayed. As
long as the session is active, the unit type, MAC and IP address are displayed on
the title of the application window.

• Another way to login into the unit is a direct access using the unit’s IP address.
Type the IP and password, select the User privilege and press Login.

5.5 Toolbar commands

Fast Firmware Update

• Press ‘Submit Firmware’.
• After successful upgrade, the Link Manager will prompt to switch banks and
reset the unit. Answer ‘Yes’ to load the new firmware.

Fast Firmware Update is usually used when the unit is connected directly to the PC
(LAN). The Link Manager supports also TFTP firmware update to upgrade the firmware
using standard TFTP protocol.

TFTP Firmware Update


• Install a TFTP server on your PC.
• Place the firmware file (*.brn) in the TFTP server directory.
• Drag & drop the firmware file to the window (or use the browse button). The
alternate bank will be selected automatically as the ‘Target Bank’.
• Enable ‘Use TFTP’ checkbox.
• Press ‘Submit Firmware’.
• After successful upgrade, the Link Manager will prompt to switch banks and
reset the unit. Answer ‘Yes’ to load the new firmware.

Boot Bank
This section is used to easily switch between the alternate bank and the active bank.
Select the desired active bank and press ‘Switch Banks.
“N/A” means there is no firmware in the bank.

Using the RF Analyzer @ the MU


The RF Analyzer is usually used prior to installation, to verify that the RF channel is
clear and to select the channel with lowest noise level (example: a channel with –90
dBm reading is better than a channel with –70 dBm reading).

Using the RF Analyzer @ the SU


During SU installation, the RF Analyzer can be used to ‘see’ the MU’s energy.

Note: When the RF Analyzer is active, it shuts down the RF channel (no link). As a
result, RF analyzer can be activated only when connected directly to the unit (not
over-the-air).

5.10 Bandwidth Test


The throughput test tool simulates hardware throughput test device (like SmartBits)
using PCs.

• Start Tx – Configure the transmit rate (Mbps) and press Tx on PC1 Link
Manager. The actual Tx rate is presented next to the Tx button.
• Start Rx – Press Rx on PC2 Link Manager and view the Rx rate next to the Rx
button.

6. Telnet
The Telnet interface allows standard configuration of WipAir system from a remote
workstation (platform independent).

6.1 Telnet Features


WipAir Telnet interface features:

6.2 Telnet Login


The first Telnet message includes:
1. Unit Model, type (MU/SU) and frequency.
2. Unit’s MAC address.
3. Unit’s IP address.

3. Peer MAC Address – my link peer MAC Address. In case of PTMP system, the
MAC address shown is of the first registered SU.
