Interview answers

Interviewee : Program, I belong to the department SCEGE kung tawagin, what’s the meaning of SCEGE
School of Civil, Environmental, and Geological Engineering. Company, shempre MU.

Interviewer : what institution you acquire your degree?

Interviewee : I completed my undergrad studies here also in Mapua, my MS Civil Engineer Major in
Construction Engineering Management was also taken in the same school. Dito rin sa Mapua.

Interviewer : Second question would be, it’s already answered sir, the chosen field is civil engineering,
why did you take civil engineer po sir?

Interviewee : I was encouraged by my mother to take it because at that time I was contemplating to take
math subject/math major or engineering. My mother told me that my cousin a civil engineer, making it
good in his profession and probably it would be better for me to follow his footsteps, that’s the idea, that’s
why my mother suggested I take up civil engineer.

Interviewer : So, there seems to be ano sir you look at the future where in your financial standing is better
than the others sir?

Interviewee : Yeah because I’m from a poor family and my mother thought all the while that would be a
venue or opportunity for me to make good and of course it would be equated to money, makakagawa ng
pera kaya nga my mother said, why don’t you follow your cousin tignan mo mayaman yung pinsan mo he
completed his civil engineering, maaaring may pera jan that’s it. I don’t have an idea about the job of a
civil engineer honestly, the time that I took it in school, pero for your information I was not really keen on
taking engineering in school. Cause of events I will not be telling you, I should have taken it there in UP,
but I was late in enrollment that’s the reason why I thought taking it in up Diliman I took it here in Mapua.

Interviewer : How many years are you working in the industry po sir?

Interviewee : Since graduation, after a year of graduation, 1973, I graduated 1972 after that I immediately
practiced my profession, so in the years 73 up to now that would be, ang hirap na computing yun that
would be 6 ano bay un 1 ano bay un 40, 46 tama 46, around 46 ba ayun 46 year of practicing my profession,
46 year in the industry.

Interviewer : What was your first job?

Interviewee : My first job is in engineering equipment was really my contract that I signed with them is
for me to be a quality control assistant, QCA but then when my boss saw my potential, because he learned
na medyo magaling ako sa feasibility study, he transferred me from QA from quality control assistant to
systems engineer position responsible for the preparation of method’s and systems, and I belong to a
different department, the department of products and systems department so officially I work as system’s
engineer

Interviewer : What company po sir?

Interviewee : EI, engineering equipment engineering EEI, quality control no. 1 yun.

Interviewer : Ilang year na po kayo nagtuturo sir?

Interviewee : Ilang taon na? since year 2001 if I’m not mistaken. From 2001 to the present mga 18 years
na.

Interviewer : Can you site your ongoing projects as an engineer po?

Interviewee : My first job was EEI, I initially work as systems engineer, I was promoted to supervisor of
products and system department, in charge of the system and methods engineering in industrial
engineering and product development engineering, that was in EI. I was given the chance to work in Saudi
Arabia, to serve as project manager, I work there for more than a year. Then after that, after arriving here
I work at Makati development corporation initially as project engineer then I was promoted to project
manager, and after working there for 3 or 4 years I decided to work on my own. Meaning I form my own
group initially I work as sub-contractor and then finally I decided to have my own project na building
apartments residential building.

Interviewer : That was around manila po?

Interviewee : Around manila lang, I never get project outside metro manila. As far as Nueva Ecija,
Most of my project are located
here in metro manila at saka puro mga bahay. The moment that I become a faculty member dito sa
eskwelahang ito di na ako masyado nangunguntrata I just work with my best friends sa malaking

Interviewee : Yun ang kasama ko kasi yung may-ari nun is my best friend in college, Mapua rin. I work as
sub-contractual niya.

Interviewer : In relevance to the development of the Philippines what do you think is the role of an
engineer?

Interviewee : Marami, marami, a lot of output that you would ay na very substanicial sa development of
the Philippines ano. Ang output nay un is referring to the construction industry, siyempre we are here for
the construction, infrastructure, buildings. Ngayon ang engineer are the one preparing this infrastructure
in preparation for its full blast economy and growth kasi sab inga “before you could have this full blown
growth in economy dapat complete ang infrastructure , dapat complete talaga kaya nga yung proyekto ng
administration “build, build, build” in preparation for full blown growth in our economy our
industrialization.
infrastructure, tayo mga CE ano that’s the most relevant role of engineers ano we are the catalyst of
growth. Without these projects siyempre walang proyekto. Pero for your information because engineers
in nature are really math expose guy and math-oriented guy, we are very good in math. Aside from
working as engineers we are also hired to work in insurance companies, manufacturing companies, hindi
lang solely construction. Madaming gamit satin dahil ang ating ability and background in math we can use
it in many other industries.
One thing na pinaka maganda sa inhinyero we are the one that makes the
preparation for para sa feasibility studies . yan ang di nakikita ng iba na exposure ko rin I can prepare a
very credible feasibility study kasi pag gawa mo ng feasibility study you have to cover marketing, you have
to cover technical, you have to cover financial.
study before building a structure dapat pag-aralan. Kikita ba ito or hind kasi the money might go to waste,
kasi how much money would be spent sa isang proyekto?

Interviewer : Millions.

Interviewee : Not only millions bit billions tapos walang kang kliyente wala kang negosyo, a good example
example is the Uniwide, done without feasibility study.
thinking na kikita rin siya dun nagkamali because there is no study conducted prior the construction yun
ang mahalagang role ng inhinyero.

Interviewer : So, we don’t disagree doon sa study?

Interviewee : Oo kasi mahirap ang feasibility study na gawin without you being not an expert on technical
could do it also magaling na man tayo sa research. Yun ang magandang papel ng inhinyero diba I would
like to mention to you na hindi nakikita na we can play the role of a consultant in any feasibility study. Pag
nagging inhinyero ka kaya mo yan lalo on my level marunong ka gumawa ng feasibility study, marunong
ka mag essay, diba.

Interviewer : What is the purpose of having global cities in our country?

Interviewee : Kasi you cannot be a successful country without having cities na globally oriented. Kasi we
have to cater to the international market. We cannot live on our own. Kasi kailangan natin mag export we
have to get trade and businesses with other countries, kasi padala tayo ng tao para yung tao doon kumikita
ng dollar so pag wala tayo global cities, those cities which are really related to other countries in terms of
business and trade. Kailangan nakikipag deal tayo, kailangan natin yun diba, kailangan natin definitely.
Global cities, the word global is this we are referring to the outside world, the other countries, kailangan
we have to do business and trade with the other countries through this global cities or global
municipalities. Hindi lang we are producing our own things on our own consumption, para din sa labas
para kumita din tayo.

Interviewer : So vice versa?

Interviewee : Oo vice versa kailangan natin yun, diba? Yan ang sinasabing global cities iyon ang ibig sabihin
ng global cities in this question, iyon ang aking pagkakaintindi. And what is the purpose of having global
cities in our country? Definitely kailangan natin kasi we would like to have business with other countries,
business and trade.

Interviewer : In terms of industrialization what is the effect of building global establishments in our
country?

Interviewee : Ano pa ba of course, syempre we are catering our own resources to the labor of the global
world, in the global market yung ating mga product not only for our own personal consumption yung ating
serbisyo would not only be limited to the local scene, kailangan magpadala tayo tao na gagawa sa abroad.
Kaya nga kailangan natin iyon. The fact of getting global establishment kailangan natin yan like example,
meron tayong mga IT building, marami tayong ganun diba mga IT, kaya meron tayong call agent. Ano pa
eto yung mga global establishment. Siguro yung global establishment yung controversial yung gaming
establishment.

1. As a Filipino engineer, what are your projects that helped the development of global
cities in our country?

Interviewer : Yung POGO

Interviewee : Oo yung POGO global din yun, kailangan natin yun, that exactly what we mean by this.

Interviewer : Sa eighth question na man po na cover niyo na po so next. What is your distinctive trait as a
Filipino engineer that may contribute to the advancement of our county’s economy?

Interviewee : In the global setting what is your distinctive trait as a filipino engineer that may contribute
to the advancement of the economy of the Philippines? Hindi na lang na man ako, I mean, but it is typical
to a Filipino engineer, yung ako hindi masyado pero nakikita ko majority of the Filipino engineers when
they are given the right pay, nako grabe ang gagaling lalo, that’s why our engineer abroad, not only
engineers any skill for that matter, when you are given the right pay iba, iba.

Interviewer : Iba po yung results?

Interviewee : Iba oo iba, yung ating overseas workers there were respected, yung pagtingin satin, kaya
hinahanap tayo lagi.

Interviewer : Iba rin po yung quality.

Interviewee : Oo lalo na yung mga construction workers when you give them the right pay. The right pay,
what they would expect, nako ang gagaling, karpintero, kartero. Ang gagaling, right pay lang. Kasi usually
ang problema nating mga Pilipino, yung attitude magaling lang tayo pag Malaki pera, give them the right
pay, more than that lalo na siguro makikita mo yung produktong gagawin, diba. Yun obserbasyon mo yun.

Interviewer : Ano po kasi yun, driving force.

Interviewee : Oo kasi sanay tayo sa hirap, tignan mop ag nakatikim tayo ng ginhawa. Maganda tayo doon,
maganda maging empleyado

Interviewer : Last question, what would be the next course of action regarding the progressive global
development on global cities such as Taguig and Makati po?

Interviewee : More cities like that, marami pa sana hindi lang only Taguig and Makati. It should be all over
the Philippines. There should also be global cities in Mindanao and Visayas. Hindi na dapat consentrated
sa Luzon, it could also be located in Mindanao and Visayas

Interviewee : Oo kasi oversaturated tayo kaya nga may inequality yung doon di naambunan. Dapat
maambunan na man, dapat equal distribution kaya there should be global cities in Mindanao and Visayas.
Ang daming tao walang trabaho doon saka malaki lupa doon. Para hindi lahat andito crouded places. Yun
ang aking ano what would be the next course of yun na nga. There should be global cities in Mindanao
and Visayas similar to that of Taguig and Makati.
