Mazra integrated project for empowerment of women and children

India is the fastest growing economy in the world with the GDP of 4.4 trillion and is set to become the
second largest economy after china by the year 2035 compared to other fast growing and developed
economy, India’s priority is not just higher growths alone but a value based and harmonious
development pattern progressively benefitting the weaker sections of the society. Economic upliftment
of the downtrodden, marginalized and weaker sections would best be achieved through local initiatives
for income generations by ensuring minimal outflow of resources. Institutions support for such
initiatives is a vital component to such development process.

Historically, women and children of India is considered as the weakest section of indian society requiring
special care support and protection. The problem of women folk of marginalized and minority
communities are far more serious compared to other communities or sections. Traditionally Indian
economy is a main centered on male and women activities were limited to household. Men were
considered as income earners and women as home makers. Extreme dependency on men for satisfying
the reasonable needs of the household resulting high suffering and harassment for women and children.
A society will not develop without a family centered development. In India, family system is very strong
in many societies women going for employment outside the house is social unacceptable. With
economic development coupled with technological advancement and social progress, the demand of
household as well as the requirement of the family increased.as such man alone is unable to fulfill the
basic requirement of the present family.

With a population of 125 crores, accounting for 1/5 the world people, the strength of the India lies
primarily on its human resources. Half of the India’s human resource is constitutes female and only a
fraction of this resource is utilized for economic development. Because of social stigma and family pre
occupation the female folk is unwilling to search for employment outside their household or locality.
With increase in literacy, education and vocational training, women achieve capacity to take any
employment but the family and social compulsion prevent them to do so. Technological advancement in
the form of cooking gas, kitchen ware, fuel and electricity eased their household burden and women has
a lot of time to spare in such circumstances. women folk is currently locked before the TV creating
further mental and physical problems. Inter household interaction and family get-togethers are
becoming a thing of past leading to social stress within the family and society. Return to the old value
based system incorporating modern an outlook is the need of the day for women empowerment and
happiness.

Minority women especially Muslims who form 85 percent of the total minority population is considered
as the weakest section in the Indian society. As the Sachar committee report submitted in 2006, the e
work participation among women is only 14.1 which the lowest among the all community. Muslim
women works mainly in household units and their earning is very poor. The work atmosphere and
household burden as low earnings make them weak and unhealthy there by creating a vicious circle.
Even though, Muslim women of kerala is better compare to their sisters in other states, they too suffer
from economic and social disabilities.

Kerala nicknamed as gods own country for its picturscape beauty and agro biodiversity is the most
socially advanced state in the country in terms of physical quality life index. It is also the most density
populated state in India with the human life quality index which is comparable even to the most
advanced countries in the world. But kerala is comparatively backward in industrial and agrarian
development and is dependent on other states for most of its food and other economic needs. Almost ¼
of the state population lives outside particularly in gulf countries for making a livelihood. Though
remittances are heavy, it is not properly utilized for the economic development of the state. Because of
family separation caused by working of male folk in distant countries, the women suffer a lot of physical
and mental strain resulting in family tensions. Many of such women are now educated and semiskilled
women who find their education and skill unutilized there by resulting in a huge waste of human
resources. A proper strategy for utilization of women potential with a family centered economic base is
the need of the day and for that collective efforts and proper initiatives are urgently required. Kerala has
a minority population of about 45%. The Christian minority accounting for 19% of the population is
economically and socially advanced but the Muslims forming about 26% of the population are relatively
backward economically, educationally and socially. Muslim minority is mostly concentrated in the north
Kerala. Malabar region is comparatively underdeveloped having a high emigrant population of
uneducated and unskilled youth to gulf countries. Of recently the return of immigrants is causing serious
economic concerns and many families find it difficult to meet both ends and means. Nowadays there is
education explosion among minority women in the Malabar region resulting in a large number of
educated unemployed women folk tied to their households. A proper utilization of these untapped
resources will create a self-sufficient and empowered women resulting in economic and social
advancement of rural area. Women prefer to be engaged end economically self-sufficient so as to
contribute her time, energy and intellectual capabilities for a better family life. Such engagement should
be consistent with social acceptance and harmonious with environment. Woman likes to be cared and
loved and a system with intrinsic values of care and love could only be create happiness in the
household. MAZRA is committed to create such a system where women in the family are economically
self-sufficient, environmentally supportive and socially acceptable.

In India, Cow is traditionally, considered as a sacred animal. Economic livelihood of ancient societies
were centered around rearing of cows and mulching of animals. With economic advancement cow
become an economic animal and those cows breeds which yield more milk have prefered over
indigenous breeds. White revolution of 1960s and 70s was primarily focused on development of
imported high yielding breeds and replacement of indigenous breeds. In the process, cow moved from
household premises into cow farms resulting in the loss of warm relationship between cow and
household.

Further, the milk yielded by cross breeds are increasing become non acceptable as a protein diet
because of the artificial feed and medicines administered to such breeds. People prefer to have milk of
indigenous breeds which is protein rich having better medicinal values . However, rearing of indigenous
breeds is presently a costly affair as the yield of such cows are less compared to cross breeds. Of late, a
demand has developed for indigenous cow milk considering its aesthetical as well as nutritious value
and people are willing to pay more for such milk. Here MAZRA plans to promote indigenous cow breeds
as an economic source of livelihood to the household and to develop a system by which empowerment
of women particularly of minority communities is achieved. Apart from providing economic source, milk
gives supplement nutritin to the rural children who suffer from nutritional deficiency particularly
protein. A growing child requires 60 grams of protein/day but low availability of pulses in Kerala make
the situation of worse. Household has to depend on milk/egg for supplementary proteins to the children
and availability of quality milk in the household is the boon to protein deficient children.

The cow based women empowerment could be made more viable if it is supplemented with biogas,
poultry rearing and vegetable gardening and bee keeping. MAZRA aims to create such an integrated
project linking cow, milk production, chicken rearing, bee keeping, fisheries and vegetable farming for
women empowerment.

The project vision

The vision of the project is “To promote creation of economically viable and socially acceptable
livelihood in economically and ecologically depressed areas for weaker sections of the society through
ecofriendly, innovative and integrated tasks”.

The Mission

MAZRA plans to fulfill the above vision through following mission components.

1. Economic and social empowerment of women

2. Women centered family development

3. To maximize self-employment and income generation through local area development

4. To Preserve and promote indigenous cow breeds

5. To develop harmonious relationship among man, animals and nature.

6. To Procure and supply of healthy milk

7. To minimize out flow of locally generated income

8. To ensure value based, financially viable and socially inclusive development pattern

9. To assure holistic development by promoting value based farming practice

10. To promote harmonious inter personal relationship among the people through innovative
livestock and agricultural projects.
Current Project

Project outline & components

The present proposal is to establish an integrated livestock and farming project for procurement,
production and supply of Desi cow milk (A2 milk) supplemented with poultry, bee keeping, fisheries
and vegetable farming. Kerala is a deficient state in supply of milk and exist huge gap between per
capita consumption demand and per capita production. Kerala accounting for 3 percent of the total
population of the country has a contribution of only .17 percentage of total milk production. The huge
gap is partially met through import of milk from other states. (Add statistics)

In kerala, dairy farming is home centered and cow rearing is on a decline. Due to environmental
issues and pollution organized large dairy farms are receiving resistance from people. Kerala is high
density populated state with limited availability of large vacant area for pasturing/rearing. Moreover ,
the land cost in kerala is very high and hence it is uneconomic for establishing dairy farms on a profit
basis. The traditional system of rearing cows in attached sheds near home is almost becoming an
extinct the harmonious relationship between man and cow has lost over the time and the new
generation seldom get an opportunity to enjoy the warmth of a cow man relationship. The women in
the house also get depressed and bored as opportunities creating spending of the time are limited in
present day homes. Further, they do not have control over the safety of the milk they consume for
feeding their children. Because of non-availability of quality milk, milk purchase for drinking is
curtailed thereby creating protein deficiency among growing children.

Apart from this, there is a need for generating income in the household especially to the women who
can become self-reliant for her home needs and also supplement family income. This project will
create such environment and innovative model in the society.

Process

This an integrated project involving cow, poultry, bees, fish and vegetables. In the initial stages,
women of thousand households with minimum infrastructure facilities will be selected as
beneficiaries. Each household is designated as unit and should agree to rear two Desi brand cows in
their home garden. Modern cows homes with hygiene standards will be provided in each household
for rearing cows. The women homemaker will be entrusted the task of maintaining the cow and
necessary training will be provided to them. Selected household should own/pocess a minimum land
area of twenty cents and access to equal area for raising green fodder. The households will get cattle
feed from a centrally distribution center. Milk produced in the unit will be collected twice a day
through a collection system.

Base campus

The project will have a base campus with base farm for demonstration as well as production purpose.
The base farm will have a capacity to rear sixty cows at a time. The base farm is attached to the dairy
and milk from satellite unit and the base farm will be collected, pasteurized and packed there for
distribution to the consuming households. The dairy will have a add on facilities for making ghee,
butter, ice cream and other milk products. The base campus also accommodate the administrative
block, veterinary clinic, training center, conference hall, guest house, laboratory, R&D division, project
evaluation and management unit etc.

Paultry unit

The households who possess more land and willing to rear poultry will be helped to establish poultry
units in their gardens. The project aims to establish four hundred poultry broiler units of hundred
chick each and four hundred Desi egg chick units of twenty five fowls each. The broiler chicken and
Desi eggs for will be bought back and marketed. The base campus will provide chicks, feed, veterinary
assistance, technical support and training to each unit.

Bee keeping

The project also propose to develop two hundred bee keeping unit in satellite households. Each unit
will have ten boxes and as such a total of two thousand boxes will be provided for bee keeping and
collected honey will be processed in a centralized process system in the base campus and will be
marketed as MAZRA natural honey.

Fisheries

The project also proposes to develop hundred fish ponds in the targeted households. And marketing
system for collection and marketing of fresh fish will be created.

Vegetable farming

Each unit will have a homestead garden for growing organic vegetables using cow dung and poultry
waste. The excess vegetables over and above home needs will be procured and marketed as
quality safe vegetables under MAZRA brand.

Location

The present project is to be implemented in Kozikkode district of Kerala in the hill vally eastern region
of the district with the base campus at Engapuzha in Puthuppadi gram panchayath. The promoting
trust had already procured twenty two acres of land at Eangapuzha is in the process of establishing
infrastructure facilities for the base campus. The location is accessible by pucca road and is just one
kilometer from national highway 212 connecting Calicut and Mysore. The area is highly fertile having
lush greenery and water facilities. A river tribute flows on the southern side of the base campus.
Engapuzha and Adivaram towns lie just two kilometers from the farm. The site is also connected with
three phase power line.

Organization
The project is promoted by MAZRA, the farm wing of Relief and Charitable Foundation of India (RCFI),
