Multiculturalism Lesson Plan (For fifth grade)
Lesson Plan Title: What does color change?
Concept / Topic to Teach: The concept of this lesson plan is to showcase the history of
this nation on its views of race. To understand that in the past the color of your skin
meant something completely different than what it does today.
General Goal(s): For students to see that race is part of your heritage. That it is a part of
your culture; however it doesn’t defy who you are and what you can do.
Specific Objectives: Students will embody the roles of how people were treated in the
past.
Required Materials: Tape, old/new books, paper, pencils, crayons
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): I would do this lesson plan on a Friday. All week long I would
be discussing race, and segregation that was present in America’s history. Due to the
integrity of the lesson I would send home a letter describing the lesson and how I
planned to execute the lesson, if the parent had a problem they could request their child
not be a part of the lesson.
Step-By-Step Procedures: The morning of the lesson I would have the students’ line up
in front of the classroom. Before the students were to enter the class I would assign
them a number. Their number would match a specific number to a desk. They child
would have to sit at the desk they were assigned for the whole day. There would be
tape along the floor to segregate the two sides. I would explain to the class that we are
going to be traveling in time and they are going to attend school how children back then
did. The odd numbered desk would be considered the “White only” side and the even
number desks would be the “Black only” side. Throughout the entire day the white only
side would get all the better supplies and textbooks. The Black only side would get the
used and broken materials. I would teach the class as a whole the same material all
until lunch. After lunch was over I would have the children switch sides so that way they
go to experience both sides. I would show favoritism to the “white only” side over the
“black only” side.
Plan for Independent Practice: I would have them write in their journal about their
experience thus far in the day.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): I would explain to them about even though today was
frustrating and difficult for some that there is a reason for this. I would explain that skin
colored decided everything. Where you went to school, who you played with, where you
ate and where you lived. I would discuss that even though that was the past we have
had great people in our history that changed all of that to where we are today.
Assessment Based On Objectives: I would assign them a Venn Diagram sheet where
they would have to based off of the weeks discussions and the live demonstration. As
well as write a letter to Martin Luther King Jr. and explain how they thought of the
demonstration.
Possible Connections to Other Subjects: As far as sub subjects this lesson touches on
compare and contrast as well as writing. This also touches on Martin Luther King Jr.
and Black History Month.
