INTRODUCTION

This experiment is used to demonstration how electricity is generated; we used the above
apparatus for the production of electricity. Electricity generation is a process of production
of electric energy or generation of certain amount of electrical energy by transforming other
types of energy into electrical energy. Electrical energy is expressed in kilowatts-hours (kWh)
or megawatts-hours (MWh).Power plants (Generation Station) are named according to the
source of energy for example Thermal power station uses coals as a source to form heat
energy that will boil the water produce steam, the energy conversion is thermal to electrical,
the steam (driving source) is used to drive the steam turbine the process goes on till electricity
is produced.
Types of energy

 Electrical energy

 Mechanical energy

 Thermal energy

These are three types of energy that we come along, these form of energy can be converted to
one another, like conversion of electrical energy to mechanical energy to that is known as a
Motoring, these form of have the same SI Unit called joules(J) because they can be
interchangeable to one another,

Sources of energy

 Sun

 Wind

 Water

 Fuels

 Nuclear energy

These are sources of energy available for the production of electricity or Electrical energy.
Electrical energy generation are named according to the source, energy conversion that
appear to the full process of the generation of electricity.

OBJECTIVES

 To connect a generator

 To use exciter as prime mover energy available

 To load the whole system with three phase star loads of resistors, inductors and
capacitor

 So we can find readings to our voltmeters and current to our ammeters then electricity
will say it is produced.

BACKGROUND THEORY

Depending upon the form of energy converted into electrical energy, there generating stations
are classified, and four types of power stations are as followers.
Thermal power station- is the type of generating station which coverts heat energy of coal
combustion into electrical energy. The process goes through different stages from Coal and
ash handing arrangement to steam generating plant from there steam turbine to alternator then
will be feed water and cooling arrangement. Through all the stages electricity will be
produced.

Hydro electrical power station- is the type of generating station which utilises the potential
energy of water at high level for the generation of electrical energy, usually it contain water
reservoir that is at a certain height, water is led to a water turbine, the turbine capture the
energy in a falling water and changes the hydraulic energy into mechanical energy at the shaft
of the turbine, the turbine drive an alternator which convert mechanical energy to electrical
energy

Diesel power station- this type of power station uses diesel engine as a prime mover for the
generation of electrical energy.

Nuclear power station- This type of generating station nuclear energy is converted into
electrical energy, elements such as Uranium (U235) or Thorium (Th232) are subjected into a
Reactor, the heat energy is then raised to steam at high pressure and high temperature, steam
goes through steam turbine which convert steam energy to mechanical energy the turbine
drive alternator to electrical energy.

EDUIPMENT USED

 Wires

 Volt meters

 Ammeters

 Variable resisters

 Variable capacitors

 Variable inductance

 Wattmeter’s

 Generators

 Alternators and power generators
