Dear Parishioners,
The word ‘GRATITUDE’ is a key to today’s
readings. I came across a saying from
Melony Beattie: “Gratitude unlocks the
fullness of life. It turns what we have into
enough and more. It turns denial into
acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to
clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a
house into a home, a stranger into a
friend”.
In our first reading (2Kings 5:14-17) we
see that the prophet Elisha asked
Naaman the leper to bathe 7 times in the
River Jordan. He was cured. He is so
thankful that he wants to shower Elisha
with gifts, but none was accepted
(needed). Instead it is Elisha who offers
the gifts … two loads of Israeli soil! We
use the terms – ‘The Promised Land’, ‘the
Law of Israel’, the Holy Land’. The ‘land’
in Jewish tradition is not just a piece of
ground. It is far more significant. It
signifies a religious reality – like water
and bread–wine and oil … They point to a
divine reality. Naaman will worship the
God of Israel from now on as a result of
the encounter with Elisha.
We see a similar debt of gratitude in the
Gospel. Notice too, that it was an
‘outsider’ Samaritan, who turned back to
say ‘Thank You’ to Jesus to express any
gratitude to Jesus. In their own minds the
others, I’m sure they were thankful, but
failed to express it. They continued on to
show themselves to the priests in the
Temple to verify their cure. This ritual

to be more important than showing
gratitude! By returning to Jesus, there is
a personal encounter taking place. This
makes a difference.
The case of the lepers is not just a
physical cure; it also brought those
healed back into the community. Prior to
that, the lepers had to live in a colony,
excluded from family and friends. Do you
have any idea of being excluded? What
does it feel like? Not good! What a
difference being accepted back after
isolation! (Reflect again on the quote
from M. Beattie).
We can learn from these examples to try
to develop an ATTITDE OF GRATITUDE!
Gratitude to God and to each other is a
vital part of our faith and religion.
Pope Francis has often spoken of the
importance in family life, of saying ‘thank
you’. it is not only the words that are
important but the intention and meaning
behind them. We are so quick to criticise,
but can be slow to show appreciation and
gratitude. What blessings do you have to
be grateful for today? Have you let God
know? Have you let others know? Say
‘thank you’ as soon as you can today!
