Summary
Designing and Managing a Hybrid Intranet
Estimated time to complete this lab: 30 minutes

Lab Objectives
Contoso, a globally distributed multi-national organization, has been running with a single
SharePoint Server 2013 on-premises platform. This introduced latency constraints for
international subsidiaries. Contoso is moving some team sites to a cloud environment to
alleviate slow response time, provide intranet connected sites no matter where employees
are, and to improve infrastructure management.
In this lab, you will learn how to create a seamless user experience for accessing
SharePoint on-premises content from a SharePoint Online team site.
You will also learn how to navigate back and forth easily between SharePoint on-premises
sites and SharePoint Online sites.
After completing this lab, you will be better able to:
 Set up navigation between SharePoint Online and SharePoint on-premises.
 Use a content search web part to surface SharePoint on-premises content on
SharePoint Online.
 Apply a theme to SharePoint Online to differentiate it from SharePoint on-premises.

Technologies
 Microsoft® SharePoint Server 2013
 Microsoft® SharePoint Online
 Microsoft® Office 365
 OneDrive for Business

Audience
 SharePoint Administrators
 SharePoint IT Professionals

Scenario
In this lab, you will manage navigation between SharePoint on-premises and SharePoint
Online. You will surface SharePoint on-premises content in SharePoint Online, and then
you will apply a theme to your SharePoint Online site collection.

Getting Started
Connect to the Lab Environment

You will be automatically logged on to the client virtual machine (VM) as Garth Fort, with
the credentials CONTOSO\GarthF, pass@word1.
Open the Lab Environment

You will be provided with a Hybrid lab user name and password, similar to LabUserXXX
and pass@wordXXX, where XXX is a number.
To get this information, please contact a lab proctor.

IMPORTANT: This is your unique user name and password throughout this conference
session and is used to log into a number of SharePoint Hybrid Hands-on Labs. Do not lose
this information.
You also have an Office 365 site collection set up for you at:
https://ContosoOnline1.sharepoint.com/sites/LabUserXXX, where XXX is the number
used in your lab user name.

Connect to the Hybrid Lab Environment: On-premises

1. Open Internet Explorer and log on to SharePoint on-premises with these
credentials:
URL: https://intranet.sphybrid.com/sites/contoso
User Name: sphybrid\LabUserXXX
Password: pass@wordxxx
NOTE: If you receive a message indicating that there is a problem with the security certificate,
click Continue to this website (not recommended).
NOTE: Due to limitations imposed by the server infrastructure for this event, lab
participants will not be able to complete some tasks in a hands-on fashion. Instead, click
steps and screen shots are provided to show you the experience you would have when
clicking through the steps. You will be alerted to these tasks in advance with the following
message:
LAB PARTICIPANTS: SCREEN SHOTS ONLY – Read, but do not execute the click
steps
If a task is not preceded by this message, you can complete all steps as written.
Exercise 1 – Overview of Hybrid Environment
Estimated time to complete this exercise: 10 minutes

Scenario

In this exercise, you will gain an overview of the hybrid environment.

Task 1 – Overview of Hybrid Environment

A hybrid environment, combining SharePoint Server 2013 and SharePoint Online, can
fuse together the best elements of both systems and offer a seamless experience to end-
users when implemented correctly. In addition, it can provide cost savings by conserving
users’ time and maximizing the inherent advantages of each environment.

SharePoint Hybrid Options:

 Search
Get search results in SharePoint on-premises or in SharePoint Online from the
SharePoint On-Premises or SharePoint Online search indexes.
 Business Connectivity Services (BCS)
Enable a SharePoint Online site collection to work with data in an on-premises
OData service.
 Duet Enterprise Online
Enable SharePoint Online users to perform both read and write operations against
an on-premises SAP system.
 Identity Management
Provide a single identity and single sign-on experience.
This HOL uses Identity Management to redirect users from SharePoint on-premises to the
OneDrive for Business on SharePoint Online. To create a successful hybrid environment,
you must configure Identity Management correctly.
The SharePoint hybrid experience offers three flavors of Identity Management.

 Cloud Identity
When you create a SharePoint online tenant and add users to the tenant, those
users are cloud identities and those identities are stored in a Windows Azure Active
Directory instance associated with your tenant.
There is no relationship between those users and on-premises users. The users
have two sets of credentials to manage: a user name and password for SharePoint
Online, and another user name and password for SharePoint on-premises.
 Directory Synchronization
This approach takes advantage of DirSync, a tool that allows you to have single
sets of identities. You can install DirSync in SharePoint on-premises and
synchronize accounts on-premises with SharePoint Online Azure Active Directory.
This includes user name and password synchronization.
Users are still prompted for credentials when trying to access content in a remote
tenant.
 Federated Identity (SSO)
When users are logged on to domain-joined machines, you can use an identity
provider, such as Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS), to authenticate
users.
This hands-on lab uses Federated Identity (SSO), so you have one user name and
password to access SharePoint on-premises and SharePoint Online, but you will still need
to log in when accessing either site. The benefit is you only have to use one log-in name
and one password for both environments.
Exercise 2 – Designing the Hybrid Environment
Estimated time to complete this exercise: 20 minutes

Scenario

In this exercise, you will learn about single sign-on (SSO). You will then redesign your
SharePoint Online tenant by adding a content search web part to pull in documents from a
SharePoint 2013 on-premises document library. Finally, you will add a top navigation item
to enable navigating back to SharePoint 2013 on-premises.

Task 1 – Investigate SharePoint 2013 on-premises and SharePoint Online

In this task, you will explore the International sub-site on the SharePoint 2013 on-premises
Contoso site collection, including the theme and document library contents.
1. In top navigation of Home page, click International.
2. Note the default SharePoint blue theme.
3. Note international content in the Documents library.
4. To navigate to your SharePoint Online tenant, in the Internet Explorer address bar
type https://ContosoOnline1.sharepoint.com/sites/LabUserXXX, where
LabUserXXX is your Hybrid lab user name.
NOTE: If you receive a message indicating that there is a problem with the security
certificate, click Continue to this website (not recommended).
5. When prompted for sign-in credentials, in the someone@example.com text box,
type LabUserXXX@sphybrid.com.
NOTE: Because we are using Federated Identity and single sign-on authentication,
you can use your SharePoint on-premises user name and password in SharePoint
Online.
6. Press Tab to move to the password text box.
7. Note that you are redirected to a Contoso page and asked for organization account
information.

Single sign-on redirects you to a unique sign-on page for Office 365.
Even though we are using SSO in this lab environment, you still need to enter your
user name and password when navigating between SharePoint Online and
SharePoint 2013 on-premises, but you only have one username and one password
to use for both environments.
8. Type your LabUser password (pass@wordXXX) in the blank text box, and then
click Sign in.
Your site collection home page opens.

Task 2 – Personalize a Site Collection

Web site designers frequently use themes and colors in complex site designs to help users
visually identify their current location in the portal. For instance, the main site collection
may be blue, but all sub sites branded with different colors. This branding technique works
well in a SharePoint hybrid scenario. You can make SharePoint on-premises one theme or
color, such as the default blue as in this lab environment, and then apply a different theme
to SharePoint Online.
In this task, you will change the theme of the International sub-site in your SharePoint
Online site collection.
1. You should be on your SharePoint Online site collection home page:
https://ContosoOnline1.sharepoint.com/sites/LabUserXXX
2. In the top navigation, click International Sales.

3. In the upper right of the International page, click Settings ( ), and then click Site
settings.
4. Under Look and Feel, click Change the look.
5. On the Change the look page, click a theme of your choosing.
6. In the left navigation of the theme page, click CHANGE.
NOTE: Your screen may not match this screenshot exactly.

7. In the Add a document dialog, click Browse and navigate to c:\HOLS\2101.

8. In the Choose File to Upload dialog box, click the image, and then click Open.
9. On the Add a document dialog box, click OK.
10. On the Change the look page, click Colors drop-down and select a color palette
of your choosing.
11. Note you can also change Site layout and Fonts.
12. When finished making changes, click Try it out.
13. If you like what you see, click Yes, keep it.
Task 3 – Surface SharePoint on-premises content in SharePoint Online

In this task, you will show the hybrid environment in action. Specifically, you will use the
Content Search web part (CSWP) in SharePoint Online (ContosoOnline1 tenant) to
surface SharePoint 2013 on-premises International document library.
The Content Search web part uses search technology to display content. When visitors
browse to a page that contains a CSWP, the Web Part automatically issues a query and
the search results are displayed within the CSWP. In most cases, visitors won't even know
that search technology is being used to display the content they're viewing. To them, it will
look and feel like any other webpage.
In this task, you will set up the CSWP on ContosoOnline1 to retrieve results from
SharePoint on-premises.
1. Navigate to the International Sales site collection on ContosoOnline1, if not there
already:
https://ContosoOnline1.sharepont.com/sites/LABUSERXXX/international.
2. In the upper left, click the SharePoint icon to return to the International home
page.
3. In the upper right, click Edit to edit the home page.
4. In the left web part zone, click above Site Feed, and then if needed, press Enter to
add white space.
5. In the ribbon, on the Insert tab, in the Parts group, click Web Part.
6. Under Categories, click Content Rollup, then under Parts, click Content Search,
and then click Add.
7. When the web part is loaded on the page, on the upper right of the web part, click
the Web Part menu, and then click Edit Web Part.
NOTE: Your screen may not exactly match the following screenshot.
8. In the Content Search web part Properties, click Change query.
NOTE: You may need to scroll up the page to see the Properties dialog.
9. In the Build Your Query dialog box, on the Basics tab, click Switch to Advanced
Mode.
10. From the Select a query drop-down, select On-premises (Tenant).
NOTE: The On-premises (Tenant) search result source was preconfigured for
these hybrid labs.
The result source limits the results for the web part to those found in the on-
premises search index. When the Content Search web part loads on the page, the
query rule fires and the search results from the SharePoint on-premises search
index are displayed in the web part.
You will now create Query text that will constrain the web part results to the
Documents library on the SharePoint on-premises International sub-site.
11. Copy the following query text and, in the Build Your Query dialog, paste the text
into the Query text box.
(IsDocument:True)
path:"https://contosoonline1.sphybrid.com/sites/contoso/internation
al/shared documents"
NOTE: You must add quotes around a URL if it contains spaces, such as “shared
documents.”

12. Click Test query when completed and note the Search Result Preview.
NOTE: SharePoint needs to index results, so you may not see immediate relevant
results in the in Search Result Preview. Instead, you may see RelevantResults(0).
Once indexing is complete, the results will populate correctly.
13. Click OK to accept the new query.
14. In the Content Search web part Properties, change Number of items to show to
6.
15. Under Display Templates, from Item drop-down, select Two lines.

16. Expand Appearance and in Title text box, type On-premises International
content.
17. From Chrome Type select Title Only, and then click OK.
18. Confirm correct results.

19. In the upper left, on the Format Text tab, in the Edit group, click Save.
Your screen should look similar to this screenshot.
Task 4 – Navigate Back to SharePoint On-premises

In this task, you will update your site collection’s navigation with a link pointing back to the
International subsite on SharePoint on-premises.
1. In top navigation, click Home to return to your site collection home page.

2. In the upper right of the International page, click Settings ( ), and then click Site
settings.
3. Under Look and Feel, click Top Link Bar.
4. On Top Link Bar page, click New Navigation Link.
5. In the Web address text box, add
https://intranet.sphybrid.com/sites/contoso/international.
6. In the description text box, type On-premises International.
7. Click OK.
8. In the top navigation, click On-premises International.
9. When prompted, enter your LabUser credentials, and then press Enter:
User name: sphybrid\LabUserXXX
Password: pass@wordXXX

In this exercise, you learned that single sign-on allows you to have one user name and
one password to log into SharePoint 2013 on-premises and SharePoint Online. You then
redesigned your SharePoint online tenant by changing the theme and background image.
You also added a content search web part to retrieve documents from a SharePoint 2013
on-premises document library, and added a top navigation item to enable navigating back
to SharePoint 2013 on-premises.

Summary
In this hands-on lab, you learned how to create a seamless user experience for accessing
SharePoint on-premises content from a SharePoint Online team site.
You also learned how to navigate back and forth easily between on-premises sites and
SharePoint Online sites.
Specifically, you:
 Applied a theme to SharePoint Online to differentiate it from SharePoint on-
premises.
 Used a Content Search web part to surface SharePoint on-premises content on
SharePoint Online.
 Set up navigation between SharePoint Online and SharePoint on-premises.
