In this world, agriculture is a feat that we have discovered since stone age.

We have then

learned many things about it and how is it important in our lives. But now, we are experiencing a

major crisis in the drop of our agriculture due to El nino and the lack of water supply. But with the

brilliant mind of researchers, they were able to boost the capability of plants in every aspect such

as growth, time of harvest and its capability to absorb nutrients. This process was successful

through the replacement of soil by a nutrient solution in our gardens. This is called hydroponics,

and it improved the economy of other countries.

But in hydroponics, the nutrient solution isn’t cheap as it sounds, so the researcher had an

idea of replacing it. The researcher thought of a liquid that has minerals that will contribute to the

plant’s growth while being economic and budget-friendly. The researcher thought of rice wash, as

it is easily found in common household. Rice wash, is the product of rinsing rice. The researcher

knew that rice contains many minerals that will help the growth of plants. It contains minerals such

as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Statement of the Problem

General Problem:

Does rice was have the potential to replace nutrient solution in hydroponics?

1. In addition, this study will also aim to test the rice wash in terms of the following

properties:

1.1 Odor
1.2 pH level

1.3 mineral content

1.4 Cost

1.5 Shelf Life

2. The study will also aim to test the effectiveness of the product in terms of:

2.1 Effect on Health of plants

2.2 The growth of plants

3. This study will also aim to compare the rice wash to a commercial solution in

terms of:

3.1 Significant properties

3.1.1 Odor

3.1.2 pH level

3.1.3 Mineral content

3.1.4 Cost

3.1.5 Shelf Life

3.2 Effectiveness

3.2.1 Effect on health on plants

3.2.2 The growth of plants

3.2.3
Hypothesis

The researchers think that certain aspects on the rice wash will be better than nutrient

solution. These are cost, pH level, mineral content. The shelf life will be affected by the rice wash’s

glucose content. The researchers hypothesize that the balanced pH level of the rice wash will be

one of its advantage of nutrient solutions. Using rice wash, it is also hypothesized that is will have

less side effects or no side effects at all compared to nutrient solution that may kill the plant if nnot

used properly. Researchers also think that due to rice wash’s availability, the rice wash will be

excessively cheaper than nutrient solutions.

On the other hand, the researchers believe that the its ability to promote growth on plants

will only be the same as nutrient solution.

Significance of the Study

The researcher knows that the nutrient solution needed in hydroponics can’t be afforded

by most people due to its cost. While, rice wash is only dumped in the sewers and canals, so why

not use it in hydroponics as a substitute for nutrient solution. The study will be made to benefit the

following:

Farmers:

Traditional planting is costly, and uses excessive amounts of water. While hydroponics does not

use much water and it will be cheap because rice water is in use.

Community:

The community relies on agriculture as their source of food, meaning that if we use hydroponics,

we do not only conserve water, but we make the cost of staples less.
Future researchers:

This study aids to benefit the future researchers if they tend to choose a topic similar to this one

and it will help them in some ways.

Future Studies:

This will aid to benefit the future studies as it can be used as a related study.

Scopes and Limitations

The study will not cover the limit of the shelf life of the rice wash as a large amount of

glucose is present in it. It will also not cover different types of plants as it will be only covering

sunflowers and lettuce. Lastly, it will not cover the budget that will be used in the setup of a

hydroponics as the study pertains only on substitute for nutrient solution and the expenses in

building a setup will not be included.

Synthesis

A hydroponic setup consumes 45% less water than that off the traditional ways of planting

and agriculture. It may have been effective, but only those who can afford can use it. Ther

researcher thought of a way to make this costly setup cheaper.

Rice loses up to 75% of its minerals when washed. The latter is then on the rice water. That

is why rice water contains large traces of minerals (NPK) absolutely needed for a plant’s growth.

Also, the pH level of rice wash is optimal for plants, as it ranges from 5.5 to 7. So the researcher

decided to substitute it to a solution that may cost up to 10000 Php (monthly).

Materials and Methods

To make the setup you’ll need:

one co ntainer

one air pump

two air stones

rice wash solution
