Pradosh fast is observed by people on the 13th day of the lunar calendar which is also known as the

Trayodashi tithi...most commonly known as the maas Shivratri, of the Krishna Paksha and Shukla
Paksha, as per which, Pradosh comes twice in a month. As the name suggests, Pradosh has two
meanings...it literally means removal of sins and secondly, its the Dusk time more commonly known
as the Godhuli...a time period of about 3 hours, divided into 1.5hrs before the sunset and 1.5hrs after
sunset....thats known as the Pradosh Kaal.
As per the Shiva Purana, Pradosh Vrat is considered to be the most beneficial fast in order to attain
health, wealth, and children. The Pradosh Vrat liberates the devotees from all the past and present
sins. By observing Pradosham with full devotion and dedication, all the demands are fulfilled by Lord
Shiva and Maa Parvati. It is believed that during the Pradosh Kaal Lord Shiva with Ma Parvati perform
a Holy Dance on the Mount Kailash in a pleased mood and so, offering puja during this gives an
opportunity to remove Negative Karma and fulfilment of all desires. It is said that lighting a single
deep or just going for darshan in the nearby shiva temple during the Pradosh Kaal is enough to

The Pradosh Vrat is a fast which is observed in the name of Lord Shiva, who is known to be the
demolisher of the universe, but in the real sense acts as a protector of the universe. It is observed
during the Sandhyakal of both Shukla Paksha (bright half) and Krishna Paksha (dark half).

WHAT IS PRADOSHAM?
Pradosham literally means removal of sins. These times are the windows of opportunity to remove
Karma or karmic energies that limit our potential in this current life.
Pradosham also spelled Pradosha or Pradosh, falls on the 13th Lunar day (Trayodashi) during the
waxing and the waning phase of the moon in the Hindu Lunar calendar. Occurring between 4:30 pm
to 6:00 pm on Trayodashi, the Pradosha time is propitious to pray Lord Shiva and invoke his
blessings. The Pradosha day is believed to be one of those days on which Lord Shiva along with the
Goddess Parvati is extremely happy, delighted and generous.
It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva at Pradosha day will relieve one from sins and help him
attain Moksha. Also in some scriptures it is said that on this lunar day Shiva purifies the Earth and
people from negative karma.
The Pradosha puja is considered to be more auspicious among all the Pujas performed by the
devotees of Lord Shiva. It is believed that during Pradosha period all universal beings and Gods
come down to earth and attend the worship. The importance of observing Pradosha is mentioned in
the Pradosha Mahatmiyam from Shiva Purana and hence Shiva devotees observe Pradosha Puja with
sanctity. This bimonthly affair indicates the meeting of the Sun and the Moon in a horizontal line
during their movement on their axis.

Pradosh means the dusk time. Pradosham is referred to the auspicious 3 hours period. This time of 3
hours is divided into two parts 1.5 hours before the sunset and 1.5 hours after the sunset. Vrat or fast
means abstinence or reduction of some food items and drinks. Hence, Pradosh Vrat means
abstinence from normal food (wheat, salt) during the time of twilight.
It is also believed that "Pradosh" means getting rid of the dosha (dosha = problem / defect acquired
as a result of sinful actions in the past). In each birth chart there are a lot of such Dosh, that's why it's
luck to know the right time when you can be self-cleaning.

RITUALS DURING SOMA PRADOSH VRAT: ✔️On the day of Soma Pradosh Vrat devotees get up at
the time of sunrise and take an early bath. The morning time is most suitable for meditation. ✔️The
puja on the day of Soma Pradosh Vrat is done during the twilight period (the time 1.5 hours prior to
sunset and 1 hour post sunset). An abhishekam of the lord is done with milk, curd, honey, ghee and
sugar. Several offerings are made as flowers, bilva leaves, coconut, fruits, dhoop and incense sticks.
Lighting a lamp on the day of Soma Pradosh Vrat is believed to be highly rewarding. ✔️After the
puja, devotees listen to the ‘Soma Pradosh Vrat Katha’ and read the chapters from Shiva Purana. It is
also considered very meritorious to chant ‘Maha Mritunjaya Mantra’ 108 times on the day of Soma
Pradosh Vrat. ✔️The fasting of Soma Pradosh Vrat begins at the dawn and ends after completing the
puja in the evening. Staunch devotees abstain from eating anything all through the day and they
break their fast by eating only the Prasad. Proper food is eaten by them only in the following
morning. However some devotees even keep a partial fast by intaking fruits and water. Such people
can end their fast by eating cooked food after the evening puja rituals. The severity of the fast is

Bhauma Pradosh Vrat is an important day for followers of Lord Shiva. When the observance of
Pradosh Vrat coincides with a Tuesday, it is popularly referred as Bhauma Pradosh Vrat or Bhaum
Pradosh Vrat. This day holds special significance as there are several legends associated with Lord
Shiva and Mangal. According to the Hindu scriptures, Bhaum or planet Mars observed severe ‘Tapas’
and was bestowed with Mangal Loka by Lord Shiva. It is therefore believed that a person who
devotedly observes the Bhauma Pradosh Vrat and worships Lord Shiva will be granted fulfilment of
all his/her desires. Women observe this sacred vrat to be blessed with a mal child. The power of
Bhauma Pradosh Vrat is such that it removes all the obstacles and negative forces in life and also
purifies the surroundings. A person having ‘Mangal Dosh’ in his/her horoscope should perform this

RITUALS DURING BHAUMA PRADOSH VRAT:

On that day of Bhauma Pradosh Vrat, devotees get up and take an early bath. The observer of this
vrat must also take bath again before sunset.
The puja is performed in the north-east corner of the home and during the ‘Pradosh Kaal’ (period
before the dusk). The place of worship is cleaned with Gangajal before placing of Lord Shiva.
Devotees perform ‘Abhishekam’ and make several offerings to the lord. While ding the rituals, one
must chants mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva. Aarti is performed in the end and the Prasad is given
to all present for the occasion.
Fasting is the prime ritual of the day. A person who keeps the Bhauma Pradosh Vrat benefits good
heath and is freed from all diseases. The fasting begins from the time of sunrise and continues till the

According to the Puranic legend, the Devas (gods) appealed to Lord Shiva in the most conducive
muhurta of pradosh to seek his help in defeating the asuras (demons). They ran to Mount Kailash on
a Pradosh evening and were received by Nandi, Shiva’s sacred bull. Shiva agreed to help them in
defeating the asuras. In this way, the tradition of Shiva worship along with Nandi on trayodashi
started and continues to this day.
In another legend, Pradosh is the time when Lord Shiva emerged from his stupor (because of the
poison he consumed from the samudra manthan) and danced the tandava on top of his Nandi bull.

Pradosha vrat or Pradosham is observed twice in the lunar month as per the Hindu calendar. This fast
is observed on the Trayodashi (13th day) of both the Krishna Paksha (Amavasya) and Shukla Paksha
(Poornima). The work ‘pradosh’ in Hindi means the dusk of the evening tide or early night. As this
sacred vrat is observed during the ‘Sandhyakaal’ that is the evening twilight, it is called as the
Pradosh vrat. According to the Hindu mythology it is believed that on the auspicious day of
Pradosham, Lord Shiva together with Goddess Parvati feels extremely delighted, pleased and
generous. Therefore the followers of Lord Shiva keep a fast and worship their deity on this chosen
day to seek divine blessings. The Pradosh vrat can be observed by all irrespective of the age and
gender. People in different parts of the country observe this vrat with full devotion and dedication.
The Pradosh Vrat is observer in honour of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati. In some parts of India, the
disciples worship the Nataraj form of Lord Shiva on this day. As per the Skanda Puran there are two
different methods of fasting on the Pradosh vrat. in the first method, the devotes observe strict fast
for whole day and night, that is, 24 hours and which also includes keeping a vigil at night. In the
second method the fasting is observed from the sunrise until sunset, and the fast is broken after
worshipping Lord Shiva in the evening..

Rituals in the Pradosh Vrat:

1. On the day of Pradosham, the twilight period that is the time just before sunrise and sunset is
considered to be auspicious. All the prayers and pujas are observed during this time only.
2. One hour before the sunset, the devotees take a bath and get ready for the puja.
3. A preliminary puja is performed where Lord Shiva is worshipped along with Goddess Parvati, Lord
Ganesh, Lord Kartik and Nandi. After which there is a ritual where Lord Shiva is worshipped and
invoked in a sacred pot or ‘Kalasha’. This Kalasha is kept on the darbha grass with lotus drawn on it
and is filled with water.
4. In some places, the worship of the Shivling is also performed. The Shivling is given a bath with
sacred substances like milk, curd and ghee. The puja is performed and the devotees offer Bilva leaves
on the Shivling. Some people also use a picture or painting of Lord Shiva for worshipping. It is
believed that offering Bilva leaves on the day of Pradosha vrat is highly auspicious.
5. After this ritual, the devotees listen to the Pradosha vrat katha or read stories from the Shiva
Purana.
6. The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is enchanted 108 times.
7. After the puja is over, the water from the Kalasha is partaken and the devotees apply the sacred
ash on their forehead.
8. After the puja, most of the devotees visit the Lord Shiva temples for darshan. It is believed that
lighting even a single lamp on the day of Pradosham is very rewarding.
