Introduction:

In this research we intend to design and develop an interactive game using the bicycles. This
game has a very unique concept in comparison to other interactive applications available in
the market. The basic idea is to use the physical strength while cycling and then this physical
strength will be used to move cars on tracks which will be customized. This game could be
installed at various places including schools, colleges and offices and lot of people will
benefit from such innovatively designed game. This game will be used for entertainment
purpose and it can be also used to maintain good health. Users will also gain psychological
benefits from this application. In this modern world, people make use of the technologies to
a great extent which eventually affects their health physically as well as mentally. This
interactive game will ensure that the users will find this game very interesting as well as
helpful when it comes to health. The physical efforts of the users during cycling will help
them to maintain good health with minimum cost. But implementation of such application
will have some complexities to some extent. Based on the previous experiments which were
conducted in the past, it was concluded that conventional cycling has less energy
expenditure as compared to interactive game of cycling. In this research, we will try to
analyze and fix issues which can be faced during the implementation of this concept. In the
setup of this interactive game, using the physical strength will be our goal. We will also try
to develop this application in a very innovative and attractive manner which will seek the
attention of users and eventually the number of users will increase. Different mechanical
components will be brought in use to keep a track on physical strength which will be used to
move cars on the track. (Waters, 2010)

Research Background:
This research will emphasize and focus on the mechanical process which will be included in
the working phase of this application development. The motion sensors which will be used
to detect and track the motion of the bicycle will play a vital role in this application. This
mechanical force will be used to set the cars in motion and these cars will start running the
tracks. We will focus on the connection which needs to be present between the bicycle and
the cars on the tracks. We will analyse the motion involved in cycling. We will also focus on
the development of the customized cars which will run on the tracks due paddling. Basic
concepts of mechanics will be brought into play and to calculate the mechanical energy
generated while riding the bicycle. We will study how the conversion from the rotary
motion to linear push takes place that too in the desired direction. One of the critical
parameters in this implementation will be the speed manipulation of the toy car. We will
also study the materials which will be used in each of the components. We will also have to
predict the life spans and durability of the components that will be used. Traditional gaming
experience was not very interactive and appealing so we will have to find a solution for the
same to make it popular among uses. Based on the results of the previous experiments
conducted in the past, it was found that traditional cycling techniques had less energy
consumption when compared to interactive gaming setup. So, we also need to find a
solution for this problem. (T. Wen, 2009)

Aims & objectives:

AIM:
Our aim is to develop an interacting gaming experience for the users which will work on the
basic principles of cycling.

Objective:

This game will help the users to maintain good health. Paddling the bicycle requires physical
strength and this strength will improve their stamina also. We plan to build this system in a
manner that minimum electricity is consumed in this process. We plan to design this
application in a very attractive and innovative style which will please the customers and this
game can also be used for entertainment purposes. To design this type of setup from a
technical perspective, few complications may arise so we need to find answers for some of
the questions before proceeding to conceptual design.
1. The first question is related to the power generated and how it will be transferred from
the gears using belt drives or chain?
2. The second question is about mashing of two gears to achieve the desired force?
3. How the dimension on the gear affects the generation of motion?
After developing a product we need to decide the type of audience that will be targeted
based of the usability of this product. To attract the customers, we need to develop a plan
based on some standards and constraints. To achieve this, following steps will be taken into
consideration. In the initial phase we plan to setup a user-friendly environment including
the safety measures. This setup should be easy to access and easy to assemble. Setup of this
game should look pleasing and attractive enough to please the audience. The cost for the
setup should not be very expensive and it should not exceed the budget.
All the components which will be used in this setup should be durable and should have
satisfactory life span.
Literature Review:

Before initiating the implementation part of our system, proper research and assumptions
are required to avoid any issues during the implementation. So we have reviewed some
research papers which were published in the past that would help us to improvise our
knowledge. These research were based on the similar concept of power generation from
paddling. Reviewing these researches helped us in gathering more information about the
core concepts involved in interactive cycling.

First Study:

The first research which has been reviewed was written by ‘MR. J .Sunil’ who is an assistant
professor of mechanical engineering in one of the college in India. The name of the report
was titled as ‘Bicycle power generation and its feasibility’. Their aim was to generate
electricity using the mechanical energy that will be generated while paddling the bicycle.
This research focuses on the generation of electricity using minimum cost and minimum
resources. Bicycle generators are brought into play. This system was operated manually. The
components that were used included bicycle, battery, invertor board, battery, chain and
generator stand. The generator was connected to the bicycle’s wheel via belt. One side of
the Belt was kept on the rim. The second side of the belt was kept on the generator which
passed through battery and the invertor board. The invertor board and the battery were
arranged in a sequence. Terminals of the generator were in contact of the battery. The
electricity generated will get stored in the battery. The current will be generated in DC form.
This DC current will be converted into AC current by the invertor. Power terminals are used
to supply power. The bicycle that is used is pedal driven and it consists of two wheels. The
conversion of the mechanical energy to electrical energy is carried by the generator. The
battery used in the invertor had voltage of 11 volts and the capacity was 22000 mA. The
weight of the battery was 6500g. The construction of the generator was based on the initial
design. Human force was used to rotate the large sprocket. The Large sprocket was
connected to small sprocket by a chain. Due to this, the wheels start rotating which is
connected to the generator. The electricity generated is in Dc form. This DC current is
converted to AC current by the invertor. Ammeter along with a voltmeter is used to
measure the power generated from bicycle. After measuring the voltage and current, power
can be calculated. It was observed that the power generated in 60 minutes was 20 watts per
hour. In this experimental setup, eight bicycles were used along with generators. So the
total power generated was 160 watts per hour. The power generation analysis and the
feasibility analysis was carried out successfully. The principles of working were analyzed
successfully. This technique of power generation can be used for domestic purposes. This
setup is portable so we can move it from one place to another easily. (Sunil, 2015)
Second Study:

The second research reviewed was based on ‘interactive bicycle simulator’ that was written
by ‘Dong-Soo Kwon’ and ‘Gi-Hun Yang’ who were studying in ’Korea Advanced Institute of
Science and Technology’. This research is based on the simulation where the rider
experiences motion while using the bicycle simulator. This experimental setup includes a
bicycle, resistance system for pedaling, projection system and a visual simulator. This
research was conducted to develop simulator. This research includes concepts like ‘motion
generation system’, ‘bicycle dynamics’, ‘handlebars’ and ‘pedal resistance system’. Visual
simulators are used to generate dynamic images. The tilting motion of the riders are
recorded and then this data is forwarded to the dynamics module. The velocity and the
location of bicycle is calculated by dynamics module. ‘The motion generation system’ uses
Stewart platform and this Stewart platform is composed of six actuators which are linear. It
includes two types of platforms, upper platforms and the other one is lower platforms. They
are used for ‘motion generating system’. Electric motor drives Stewart platform that possess
140 kgf load capacity. Tracking control of system can have value around 8Hz and then
simulation of the bicycle takes place. For this, model-based strategy was used that includes
calculations based on system dynamics for each sampling time. As the bicycle has two
wheels, it can have different types of rotational movements and also it can go translational
directions. Estimation of different forces and rider’s motion are mandatory to measure
bicycle dynamics. The model that was used in this research had two wheels (front and back),
handlebars and a frame. It was assumed that the entire weight of the bicycle was equally
divided between the two wheels. It was also assumed that all the components of the bicycle
are rigid excluding the tires.

The speed of the bicycle changes according to the pedalling actions and brakes. Handlebars
can be used to change the direction. The forces which were taken into consideration were
air drag and friction between the tires. When the speed of the bicycle is very low, the air
drag force and resistance is neglected. The air drag force is directly proportional to the
speed. It is assumed that tires can undergo deformation only when it has direct contact to
the ground. Reaction forces through the bicycle are passive and active reaction forces.
Simulator’s controlling system includes some computers. One of the computers is used to
control Stewart platform. Second computer controls evaluate the dynamics of the bicycle
and the third computer is used for displaying campus models. This simulator the bicycle was
developed keeping in mind the issues involved in bicycle dynamics and the frictional forces
between wheels and ground. The rolling resistance was also taken into consideration. The
rider’s leaning motion was also calculated. The users get realistic feeling while using these
bicycle simulators. (Dong-Soo Kwon, 2001)
Third Study:

The third research which was reviewed was based on ’Interactive Video Cycling leading to
Higher Energy Expenditure and more enjoyable than conventional exercise in adults’ which
was conducted by ‘Mr. Javier Monedero’ and ‘Mrs. Elizabeth Lyons’. In this research, 35
participants went through a cross- sectional analysis. In the initial step, the participants
performed maximum cycling activity and oxygen intake was measured for identifying
ventilator threshold. Participants were supposed to report a laboratory at ‘Dublin City
University’. Participants were asked to report on different days. On the first day, test on
incremental maximal was conducted on ergometer to evaluate the maximum oxygen intake.
On the second day, the participants were given information about the Game Bike and also
with the video game.

On the remaining days, the participants performed cycling activity for about thirty minutes
that too in a random order. Oxygen peak test was conducted using an open circuit
spirometer. The power output was initially fifty watts for females and seventy-five watts for
males. During the gaming trials, the participants were asked to lie down for about ten
minutes and determining the physiological variables was done. The baseline values of
oxygen intake were calculated based on the observation of last three minutes. High EE rate
and high oxygen intake during ICVG sessions depended on various factors. One of the factor
includes physical discomfort because in ICVG sessions included audio and visual
interactions. It was observed that single session of ICVG (Interactive Cycling video game)
resulted in significant rise in EE rate in comparison with a single session of conventional
cycling. Participants found ICVG more interesting. Hence we can say that ICVG is a good
alternative to maintain good health. In this research, it was found that ICVG sessions
achieved greater ratings in terms of enjoyment in comparison to conventional cycling
sessions. In the end, it was concluded that metabolic activities and cardiovascular activities
exceeded the physical activity guidelines under ‘international recommendation’.

It was also observed that the interactive video game cycling also included the same amount
of efforts as required for Conventional Cycling. The ratings interactive cycling got in context
of entertainment were better than the Conventional Cycling. The intensity of exercises
observed in interactive cycling game was higher than the intensity observed in conventional
cycling. (Javier Mondero, 2015)
Design methodologies:

Design Phases:

Chapter/Phase I (INITIATION)
Project design initiation consist of deducing the field and project domain. In this phase we
will decide the exact design field of the project. We will than discuss and finalise the project
domain and title. Once the domain is finalised, we will specific project-oriented aim and
objectives. Finalisation of topic of project will than be followed by literature review to attain
the required conceptual knowledge and fill the design gap to produce the conceptual
design.

Chapter/Phase II (LITERATURE REVIEW)

Before the development or consideration of any design it is important to keep the basic or
design related basics clear. This phase of the project will consist of studying the basic
mechanics of the design engineering and current concept designs based on our topic.
Literature review from previous posted papers, reports and researches will help us deduce
the required information for covering the gaps that we have based on interactive system.
We will try to involve the related literature acquired in making robust design that can be
practically implemented thorough our project.

Chapter/Phase III (RESEARCH DESIGN)

Once the literature gap is full filled this phase of the project will consist of bifurcation of our
design project based on different fields required. First, we will deduce the methods that will
be required to prepare our projects. We will than take a further look at the numerical
calculations based on the mechanical components used. It will consist of calculations based
on the loads, power transmission etc. We will deduce the major parts that will be required
to construct the interactive gaming set up in this phase. We will construct the concept
design based on the acquired principles through literature review. Created concept design
will be than developed using CAD modelling. Motion analysis will be performed to check
proper mating of the designed parts.

Chapter/Phase IV (CONCEPT VALIDATION)

Phase four of the project will concede the calculation and analysis part. Once a software-
based model is created using desired concept we will make run the simulation for dynamic
loads. It will include analysis of stress, strain etc. Bending moments of the shafts involved in
the setup will also be tested to determine their failure point based on weight. Once these
calculations are made, we will perform numerical calculations to validate the software
attained results. After the validation of the results we will perform construction of the
model.
Chapter/Phase V (CONLCUSION AND SUMMERY)
After successful manufacturing and construction of the project we will conduct an
experiment involving our peers to determine the practical feasibility of the constructed
model. The experiment will be based on different age groups people and their respective
weights. BMI will be calculated and a comparative data base will be created. We will also
produce a survey form to test the user interaction of the designed project. We will than
compare all the data both mathematical and statistical in order to attain the comparative
results and check the feasibility of the design.

Concept Designs:

Following are the designs based on two different mechanism for the design considereation.

CONCETP I.
Concept I based on Simple chain drive and gear train mechanism:

Figure. Concept 1
Setup:

Given setup consists of 1 circular track that will consist of 2 tracks and cars. There will be
hollow designated path for the car to propagate through. The push that will be need for the
car to travel through the track will be given by the chain drive mechanism. Power generated
through peddling of cycle will be transferred to the gear train. Gear train will consist of
mated gear with respective gear ratio which will help torsional spring in the mechanical
setup to store the kinetic motion. Then once the paddling is detached through from the
setup the spring will try to form its original state liberation some amount of kinetic energy.
This kinetic energy will be converted to mechanical work and will be transferred to the car
driving system which will run the car on the designated track.

Steps of Mechanism:

 Two players will start paddling the cycle and motion generated from the paddling
will be transferred to setup.
 Controlled motion through differential will be used to contract the torsional spring.
 Cycle will be than detached from the system. Cutting the supply of power to the
system.
 Kinetic energy produced from the spring will run the car through the track.
 Car that will attain the required kinetic energy first will convert it to potential energy
and will help run through the track faster than the other car.
 A trip mechanism will be set to control the contraction of the torsional spring.

Advantages:

 Moderate difficulty of design.

 Easy to manufacture and assemble.
 Durable and will have requirement of less maintenance.
 User friendly and due to usage of differential there will be enough exercise time.

Disadvantages:

 Space required for the setup will be huge.

 The weight of the setup will be heavy thus restricting the mobility.
 Very fast paddling might hamper the durability of the setup due to wearing of
mechanical parts.
Concept II

Concept 2nd is base on the dynamo mechanism which will use the energy generated through
paddling to produce energy and produce electricity to generate progress of the setup.

Figure 2. Concept II

Setup:

Above stated concept design uses bicycle, dynamo, gear train, differential as main
mechanism parts to develop the total setup. It consists of vertical straight track on which
two-line patterns are drawn which is has LED lights on each side which when glow give
illusion of car travelling in upward direction. The average is required for the setup is is
around 4x5 meters. There the board with car track will not require any electricity source.
The basic idea behind the design is that it will use the potential energy generated through
cycle will be used to glow the lights on the panel with help of electricity generation through
dynamo. The ergonomic of the setup will look like any other arcade game that we play.

Steps:

 Paddling the cycle will rotate the chain pully.

 Generated energy will be transferred to the differential through chain drive and
rotation of the shafts.
 The differential will supply required power to the dynamo which in return will
convert the mechanical energy to electrical energy.
 The generated energy according to the magnitude will glow the light attached to the
panel and will show case the progress in the vertical direction.
 The LED panel that is fully light will give the impression of completion of the race and
winner presentation.

Advantages:

 The outlook of the design will be very appealing and attractive.

 Low maintenance.
 Feasible for all age group of people.
 The exercise time for paddling will be more than concept one.

Disadvantages:

 Design of the concept will be very complex

 Manufacturing and assembling cost of the setup will be higher
 Proper support for vertical panel will be need for ensuring the safety of the people in
the vicinity

Comparison of concept design:

Comparing both concept design on the basis of manufacturing, assembling, lifespan and
design difficulty. We can observe as a mechanical and design engineering considering the
project constraints the design with the simple mechanical parts will be easier to design and
manufacture. The cost of the system will also be less. Second concept is more attractive on
the outside, however disadvantages associated with it outweighs the advantages. Hence it
will be feasible to move forward with detailed designing of concept I.

Design tasks:

Design tasks can be divided in to 3 major fields of parts based on design requirement one is
computer model created using design software and second will be calculations based and
third will be physical construction of the model.

Concept Development:

Concept development stage we tried to develop conceptual design based on different type
of mechanism. We started with the simple mechanical setup to hybrid of mechatronics. By
the end of this task we were able to populate two designs which we have used in our
concept designs sections. Both designs are distinctive and innovative. And require advance
and critical level thinking and designing skills.

CAD modelling:

After the selection of the concept model. We intend to make a CAD model which will make
determine the feasibility and sustainability of the design virtually and analytically with the
help of simulations and motion analysis. We will draw all the calculation and analysis based
on the results oriented here. And then determine the practical feasibility of our design for
the engineering project.

Setup Manufacturing:

After all the analysis is made and feasibility of the project is proven we need to analysis
machine the required parts using mechanical workshop to develop and assemble the setup.
Once all the parts that are needed are procured we will assemble the whole system and run
test experiments and take surveys and review to validate the efficiency and practicality of
the project.

Resource Procurement Requirement:

Rubber:

Rubber sheets will be required to lay out the track for the setup. The track is set to be
having diameter of 1m. Thus, we will need the sheets of the rubber to setup on track of
4mx1mx0.1m dimension.

Aluminium:

We will need aluminium sheets and planks for the creation of the structure of the setup
including track and frame of the setup.

Differential:

Differential is need to control the supplied RPM from the driver shaft. The cycling will
produce very high RPM and it will not be feasible for dynamo to work at such torque. Thus,
differential will help the required power to make the system reliable and feasible.

Dynamo: Dynamo will be used to get the differentiated energy in the form of revolutions
per minute to generate electricity that can charge the phone.

Gear: Gear will be used to transmit and convert the torsional motion to translational motion
and help in the contraction of the spring which will actuate the driving mechanism for the
toy car on the track.

Bicycle:
Bicycle will be used in order to peddle and supply the motion to the gear train and
differential.

Plastic cars:

Plastic cars will be used to determine the progress due to paddling on the track and will
determine the track winner.

Torsional Spring:

Torsional spring will be used as power mechanism element in our setup to provide motion
to the toy car.

Miscellaneous Setup items: Certain small mechanical tools like screwdriver, nuts etc will be
used to assemble and create the setup.

Project Budget:

Product Number needed Price

Bicycle 2 100x2= $200

Aluminium 3 58x3= $174

Gear train 1 $120

Dynamo 1 $80

Torsional Spring 1 $180

Differential 1 $187

Plastic cars 2 20x2 = $40

Rubber 1 $57

Miscellaneous $70

Total $1148
From the above stated table its clear that the total budget of the project is approximately
$1200. In addition to this the project setup will require 4x4 meter of space to be installed
within.

Conclusion:

After consideration of all the data presented above, we can conclude that the project is
feasible to the designed and constructed practically. We can see all the mechanical process
that will required in the project to be simple mechanical process. The designated Gantt
chart provides the information about the total layout of the project according to the time
frame. After CAD modelling of the interactive design setup we will make simulations and
analysis of for load and stress conditions that will test the robustness of the setup and life
span. The detailed material requirement list designates the required components for
calibration of the project. The presented budgets reparents that the total project cost is
feasible and can be considered for practical manufacturing implement and test on the
peers.

However, above stated setup will help us improve the physical fitness amongst peers. As
students and office worker we do not get much time to exercise our body to maintain a
healthy life style due to time constraints. This machine in the vicinity will help us exercise
and have fun with the peers at the same. The proposed design of the project is appalling
considering the ergonomics and we guess this project will be successful.
