Death Penalty: Discipline Key or Immorality?

“Who, exactly, gives us the right to kill? If killing is wrong, then why are we allowed to kill?”
-John Grisham

Is the death penalty really an effective way to discipline the society? Or it is an immorality act
that causes sin?
Death Penalty continues to be an issue of controversy and is an issue that will always debated
for so many years even here in Philippines. However it is not so easy to consider death penalty
as an easy way to punish the guilty. This has been a very serious problem for human rights
groups, religious figures and other people who oppose the death penalty. There are many who
support death penalty while others oppose it strongly.

. Killers, murderers, terrorists, drug lords, rapist. Who cares if they are faced with death,
right? They deserve to be punished. It only proved that Justice is better served and it also gives
a closure to the family of the victims. And others believe that Death Penalty is Necessary to
Deter Other Criminals. Those are the arguments of others who are in favor of the death penalty
but this asks the question does the government have the right to take away someone’s life?
What if you couldn’t be sure? I mean we’re only human, we all make mistakes What if the
convicted is innocent? Here are the reasons why death penalty becomes immorality.

It creates violence. If a society punishes a murderer by murdering them what are we saying
about violence? Our society teaches its children that violence does not solve anything, and yet
our highest form of punishment is no different than the crime it punishes.

The possibility that innocent people may be put to death. Though there are scientific
methods available to investigate the crime, nothing is guaranteed. You cannot remove the
chances of punishing innocents completely because no one is perfect even judge, what
happens if the person given a death penalty and evidences later turns up and it reveals that this
person is innocent? And that person is given death penalty, there is no turning back.

Life is Sacred. This is the most important. No one has the right to kill a person’s life. No matter
how anyone looks at it, no one can deny the fact that death penalty is the killing of a living. A
human being with mother, father, girlfriend/wife and memories. How could you appreciate God’s
creation if you are taking the life that He gives?

No one has the right to deprive a person’s life, God is the giver of life and only He can
take it. It is Him who can give the true meaning of justice and by his own ways He can make
every single man repent for their sins. Let us bear in mind that Jesus Himself is a victim of death
penalty but instead of revenge He forgave those who humiliated Him and even prayed for them.
If God can forgive why can’t we?

“To take a life when a life has been lost is revenge not justice” – Desmond Tutu
