The Great Pyramid of Giza was built as a tomb for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu. It took
approximately 20 years to build and has three burial chambers inside. When it was originally built (in
approximately 2550 BC) it was almost 147 meters tall. Today, because of erosion, it is only about 139
meters tall. If you visit Egypt today you can enter the Great Pyramid through the Robbers Tunnel.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest of all Seven Wonders of the World. This pyramid is the
largest of all three pyramids that border El Giza, Egypt and it is also the largest pyramid ever built. The
pyramid was built with about 2.3 million stone blocks and it is thought to weigh 5 .9 million tonnes.
The ancient name of the Great Pyramid of Giza was Khufu’s Horizon. This pyramid is the only one in
Egypt known to have passages inside that go up and go down. If you wanted to visit the king’s
chamber you would have to walk down, all the way bent over.
The Great Pyramid of Giza once had a swivel door at the entrance. It weighed about tones and
could easily be pushed open from the inside. On the outside it was very hard to find because it fit
perfectly. There are only two other pyramids known to have had swivel doors. One was Khufu’s
father’s pyramid and the other was his grandfather’s pyramid. The mortar that was used to build the
pyramid cannot be reproduced today. Even though it has been analyzed they still can’t make it. It is
stronger than the stone that was used to build the pyramid and is still in place today. There has been
no writing or hieroglyphics found inside the Great Pyramid of Giza.
I was on a tour bus with my classmates. We were on our way back to school after a long
day visiting museums and an amusement park. No wonder we left very thirsty. Sowe gave a
big hurrah when two of our friends distributed soft drinks. Soon the bus was noisy with
gulping sounds.
Everyone was enjoying his/her own drink. Everyone? Well, no ... I found the taste of the
soft drink kind of funny. It was sour. I felt suspicious and quickly looked for the expiry date
printed on the back of the cartoon. May 20! Gosh ...that was nearly two months ago. I stood
up, cleared my throat and said, "Stop drinking! These soft drinks arealready expired. The
expiry date is last May.
"At once almost everyone stop drinking. Some of my friends even threw their half empty
drinks into the garbage bins along the bus aisle. Then I heard a voice shoutin5, "you fool,
that's May next year not May this year!" Now everybody gave me a dark look. I felt terrible
because I knew that we were still thirsty. I found out later that the drinks tasted sour because
they had a new lime flavour.

Once, a cap seller was passing through a jungle. He was very tired and needed to rest.
Then, he stopped and spread a cloth under a tree. He placed his bag full of caps near him and
lay down with his cap on his head.
The cap seller had a sound sleep for one hour. When he got up, the first thing he did
was to look into his bag. He was startled when he found all his caps were not there. When he
looked up at the sky, he was very surprised to see monkeys sitting on the branches of the tree.
Each of the monkeys was wearing a cap on its head. They had evidently done it to imitate him.
He decided to get his caps back by making a humble request to the monkeys. In return, the
monkeys only made faces of him.
At last he found a clever idea. “Monkeys are a great imitator,” he thought. So he took
off his own cap and threw it down on the ground. And as he had expected. All the monkeys
took off the caps and threw the caps down the ground. Quickly, he stood up and collected the
caps, put them back into his bag and went away.
On July 20, 1969, the dream to visit the moon came true. Two American astronauts
landed on their names were Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin. The first thing the men
discovered was that the moon is covered with gray dust. The dust is so thick that the men left
footprints wherever they walked. Those were the first footprints any living thing had ever
made on the moon. And they could stay there forever! There is now wind or rain to wipe them
away. The two astronauts walked on the moon for hours. They picked up rocks for earth
scientists to study. They dug up dirt to bring back to earth. They set up machines to find out
things scientists wanted to know. Then they climbed back into their moon-landing craft.
The next day the landing-craft rockets roared as the two men blasted off from the
moon. They joined Michael Collins in the space ship that waited for them above the moon.
Then, craters, plains, and tall mountains of the moon. The left the machines they had set up.
And they left footprints that may last forever.
