Inverse functions-Tables and Graphs

Homework Problems:
1. A function f(x) has these values: f(2) = 5 and f(4) = 5.
a. Give the coordinates of two points on the inverse graph.
b. Explain why the inverse of f(x) is not a function.

2. A function f(x) has an inverse f –1(x) that is also a function.

Given each fact below about one of the functions, write a fact about the other function.
a. f(1) = 2
b. f –1(–3) = 5
c. The domain of f(x) is {0, 1, 3, 5}.
d. The domain of f –1(x) is {–3, 0, 2, 4}.
e. f(x) has x = 3 as a zero.
f. f(x) has its y-intercept at (0, 4).
3. Given the facts stated in all parts of problem 2, fill in these tables for f(x) and f –1(x).
You should have enough information to fill both tables completely.
x f(x) x f –1(x)

2. Suppose a function f has an inverse. If f(2) = 6 and f(3) = 7, find:

a. f −1 (6)
b. f −1 ( f (3))
c. f −1 (7)

3. Suppose
€ f(x) is a one-to-one function with domain (−∞,−2) ∪ [4, ∞) and
range [−3,0] ∪ [1, ∞) . Find the domain and range of f –1(x).

4. A graph of v(x) is given on the grid.

a. Is v(x) an invertible function? Justify your answer.
b. Draw the inverse of v(x) anyway. Explain why it isn’t a
function.
c. Find a restriction of the domain of v(x) so that the
restricted graph will be invertible.
d. Using your restriction from part c, graph the inverse
function v–1(x).
e. Find a second possible answer to part c.

5. Here again are two functions from the previous assignment: E = f(S) and C = g(E).

a. Is the inverse of f also a function? If yes, make an input-output table and a graph
for the inverse function f –1. Label the axes with their meanings. If no, explain
why not.
b. Is the inverse of g also a function? If yes, make an input-output table and a graph
for the inverse function g–1. Label the axes with their meanings. If no, explain
why not.

6. Draw the inverses for the following graphs. Remember that the way to do this is to take the
important points from each graph and reverse the coordinates.

a. c.

b. d.

7. Are the inverses of these graphs functions?

a. function not-a-function
b. function not-a-function
c. function not-a-function
d. function not-a-function
