CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study


Mobile games are application that is designed for smartphones. Due to
technological advancement, mobile games are having an increase of popularity because it
could be downloaded for free or ‘freemium’ games (Su, Chiang, Lee, & Chang, 2016).
According to Lee at al. (2014), that there are negative effects of using mobile games
where psychological traits are affected. Anxiety, lower self-esteem, distress and
technostress are factors of psychological stress. However, there is a good thing in playing
mobile games more kids or teenager is more having fun playing mobile games in their
home even they don’t play in the outside of their home In contrast, this group also
reported greater enjoyment in playing, greater interest in continuing to play, and greater
acquisition of new friendship (Smyth, 2007). The aim of this study about relation of
mobile games is to know the possible reasons of the students using mobile games and to
determine the level of exposure of the students on playing mobile games. This study
discusses about the relation of the time spent to mobile games to academic performance
of grade 12 students in General Flaviano Yengko Senior High School school year 2019 –
2020.

1.2 Statement of the Problem


The study aims to answer the following questions:

1. How much time does the grade 12 students spend daily on the mobile games?

2. What is the present academic performance of sample?

3. Is there a significant relationship of time spent to mobile games to academic


performance?

1.3 Significance of the study

The importance of this study is to know if there is a relation of mobile games through
academic performance and it will benefit teachers to know if the mobile games can affect
academic performance and it will benefit other researchers in the future.
1.4 Research Framework

Mobile games is was negatively related with the degree of game addiction, whereas
social self-efficacy in the virtual world online indicated a positive association. Social
activities with parents are negatively associated with game addiction, although no
relationship is found between gaming activities with parents and game addiction. Parental
attitude toward gaming has a negative relationship with the addiction. Results and
implications are discussed. (Jeong and Kim 2011).

1.5 Hyphothesis

 Correlational- The relationship of time spent to mobile games to the academic


performance.
 Survey- To Know the effects

1.6 Definition of Terms


Mobile phone – a cell phone or hand phone sometimes shortened to simply mobile, cell
or just phone, is portable telephone that can make and receive calls over a radio
frequency link while the user is moving within a telephone service area.
Games – a form of play or sport, especially competitive one played according to rules and
decided by skills, strength, or luck.
Internet – a global computer network providing a variety of information and
communication facilities, standardized communication protocols.
Player – a person taking part on a sport game.
Student – a person who studying at the school or college.
Technology – the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in
industry.
Relationship – the way which two or more concepts, objects or people are connected or
the state of being connected.
Time – the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present and
future regarded as whole.
Spent – having been used and unable to be used again.
Video game – a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a
computer program on a television screen or the other display screen.
Gamer – a person who plays video games or participates in role playing games.
Video game addiction – this is an also known as gaming dis order is defined as
problematic.
Online – controlled by or connected to another computer or to a network.
Phone – a telephone.
Self-esteem – confidence in one’s own worth or abilities self-respect
