HOW DO YOU INTERACT WITH YOUR STUDENTS?
Build Connection

The first thing that you should do before

starting the class is to be ready to
welcome your student
Partner with your student

It is a class, yes, but we, when I say we I

mean you and the student are partners in
learning and you are not just telling them
what to do but you’re guiding them to
learn.

Establish that you know what

you’re doing.

Establishing that you’re competent

makes it easier for the students to
follow your lead.

Teaching 101

There are always a set of words in all of our materials. Some

easy, some difficult even for us. We all know that they have a
knack with memorization, they probably know some or most of
the words, what we do is we read WITH them. And always check
for their understanding by asking them to use it in a sentence.
This will enforce their learning and will give you an idea on what
else you can help them with in terms of vocabulary.

HB SERIES OF 2018 8
Teaching 101

What are words but to web a story. There will be stories or

articles in the materials. Oftentimes, most tutor would just read
the story and ask questions. That’s a dead end. What you need to
do is to ready the story WITH the student. That’s right, it’s that
word again “with”. We PARTNER with our students.

We chunk the articles. You can take turns in reading. After

reading you can have the student explain how he understood the
story/article.

Everything in this world can be
Resolved by sitting down and talk.
Most of our students do not have
The English environment, so probably
The only time they get to speak with
someone is through your class. Make
use of that opportunity. Make your
class worthwhile and talk with your
student, I mean really talk to them.
People learn a lot as well through
conversations. Make your class count,
make it something that they would
want to have over and over.

CORRECTIONS
One of the pivotal elements of ESL (English as a Second Language) class is the giving of feedback and
corrections. For some it can be the same difference but let’s face it, it can make or break your stance as a
teacher.
As much as we want the errors to be corrected at all times, we also have to consider these factors:
A. The culture your student belongs to in terms of educational setting.
B. The cultural norms.
C. Their age.
D. The level of your student in understanding the corrections you provided.

HB SERIES OF 2018 11
CORRECTIONS – Young Learners

Children are like a sponge, they absorb

everything that we say to them. In teaching
a young learner, one key factor is repetition.
We have to show them how its done or in this
case how to say it.

HB SERIES OF 2018 12
CORRECTIONS – Teens
Teens have gone through several levels in
school already and most of the time,
especially for Chinese learners, they have
memorized the rules of Grammar and would
often challenge your knowledge based from
what their teachers in school said. How to
go about it? Show them what was wrong and
how to properly do it. Also try to explain the
rationale behind it.

HB SERIES OF 2018 13
CORRECTIONS – Adults
● For adult students we
can do a bit of both.
Show them how it's done
with repetition and

ways of learning and have
different ways on how they
want to be guided or
corrected.

● Lastly, have them show it to you

to check their understanding.
