C. Lesson Proper
A function f is defined by y = f(x),
then x is called the independent
variable. Any element of the
domain can be chosen as a value
of the independent variable.

Class, how about the dependent The resulting value determines the
variable? corresponding value of the
dependent variable y.

The value of the dependent

variable y = f(x) that corresponds to a Evaluating a Function.
specific value of an independent
variable x is found by substituting x into
the function rule, then, simplifying the
resulting expression. This process is
called?

Very Good Class!

We also have a rule in evaluating a

function. Josh please read. Replace every x in the function
rule f(x) with the given value, then
simplify the resulting numerical
expression.
Excellent!

Page | 2
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
Let’s have some examples:

Evaluate the given function To evaluate the function, simply

f(x) = x2 + 3x – 2 if the value of replace x in the f(x) with the given
x = -3 replacement value:

If x = -3, then
f(-3) = (-3)2 + 3(-3) – 2
= 9 + (-9) – 2
= -2

Great work!

If x = 0, then
Now, let us use the same f(0) = (0)2 + 3(0) – 2
function if the value of x = 0 = 0 + (0) – 2
= -2

Very Good!
Let us try this function

f(x) = 3x – 1 , if the value of x = 2

f(x) = 3x – 1
Who wants to try on the board? = 3(2) – 1
= 6 -1
=5

Excellent work!
f(x) = 3x – 1
How about if x = -2? Anyone who = 3(-2) – 1
want to try? = -6 -1
= -7

f(x) = 3x – 1
That is right! Thank you.
= 3(0.5) – 1

Page | 3
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
Now, how about if we try x = (0.5)? = 1.5 - 1
= 0.5

It seems that you already know the

process of evaluating a function. Let us
try to have some examples where in
the value of x is a fraction.

Let us try this function

f(x) = 8x + 6 , if the value of x = 3/4

Who wants to try on the board? f(x) = 8x + 6

= 8(3/4) + 6
=6+6
= 12
That was great!

Let us now study how to find the

difference quotient of a function.

What do you call the difference

quotient of a function?
Yes, Karl?
Derivative
Very good!

In finding the difference quotient

of a function you need to
memorize one formula. What is it
Michael?

Okay correct!

There are steps in finding the

Page | 4
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
difference quotient of a function.
1. Substitute the value of x into
(x+h).
2. Write the equation formed after
the step 1 and subtract it with
the original value of f(x).
3. Divide it all to h.
4. Solve for the simplest form.

Let’s try to find the difference quotient

of f(x)=4x+3.

Now let’s try another function

f(x)=x2+3.

Anyone who love to try on the board?

Yes, Kim.

That’s great!

Another topic related on function is

finding the sum and difference of
functions.

If f and g are functions with domain D1

and D2 respectively, their sum is the

Page | 5
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
function defined as

(f+g)(x)= f(x)+g(x)
And their difference is the function
defined as

(f-g)(x)=f(x)-g(x)
The domain of (f+g)(x) and (f-g)(x) is D1
Ո D2.

For example:
Let f(x)=2x3-5x+4 and g(x)=3x2+2x-6.
Find the (f+g)(x) and (f-g)(x).

Another example: Let

Find:
a.
a. (f-g)(x)
b. (g-h)(x)
c. (f+h)(x)

Who wants to try on the board?

Letter a, yes, Mark.

Very good!

Page | 6
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
Letter b, Angel.

Nice!

b.

Letter c, Shiela.

Great!
c.

Gets?
Yes, Ma’am.

Now you will learn how to find product

of functions:

(f۰g)(x)=f(x) ۰ g(x)
Let us try to multiply these two
functions:

1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 (𝑓 • 𝑔)(𝑥) = (2𝑥 + 3) (𝑥 2 )

= 2𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2

2. 𝑣(𝑥) = 5𝑥 + 1, (𝑣 • 𝑤)(𝑥) = (5𝑥 + 1) (3𝑥 − 2)

𝑤(𝑥) = 3𝑥 − 2 = 15𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 3𝑥 − 2
= 15𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 − 2

3𝑥 2 −7𝑥−6 3𝑥 2 −7𝑥−6 3𝑥 2 +𝑥−2

3. 𝑓(𝑥) = , (𝑓 • 𝑔)(𝑥) = ( 9𝑥 2 −4 ) (𝑥 2 −2𝑥−3)
9𝑥 2 −4
3𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 2 (3𝑥 + 2)(𝑥 − 3)
𝑔(𝑥) = 2 =
𝑥 − 2𝑥 − 3 (3𝑥 + 2)(3𝑥 + 2)
(3𝑥 + 2)(𝑥 + 1)

(𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 + 1)
Aside from addition, subtraction and =1
multiplication of functions, we also
have the division of functions.

(f/g)(x)= f(x)
g(x)

Page | 7
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
Let f(x)= √2x and g(x)= √x-1.

Now try solve this on the board.

Yes, Angelo.

Very good!

How about 𝑓(𝑥) =

𝑔(𝑥) = ?

Hannah on the board!

That was great!

Next is finding the composite of

functions. It is written: (f º g)(x)
Which means: f(g(x))

Let us solve for these examples.

1. f(x) = 2x+3 and g(x) = 𝑥 2

(f º g)(x)=f(g(x)) 2(𝑥 2 ) + 3 = 2𝑥 2 + 3

(2𝑥 + 3)2
(g º f)(x)=g(f(x))

2.

D. Exercises
If the function f(x) = 2x2 + x – 3, find
the following function values:

a. f (0)  f (0) = 2(0)2 + (0) – 3

= 2(0) + (0) – 3
=0+0–3
= -3

b. f (3)  f (3) = 2(3)2 + (3) – 3

= 2(9) + (3) – 3
= 18 + 3 – 3
= 18

c. f (-2)
 f (-2) = 2(-2)2 + (-2) – 3
= 2(4) + (-2) – 3
= 8 + (-2) – 3
=3

d. f (0.5)  f (0.5) = 2(0.5)2 + (0.5) – 3

= 2(0.25) + (0.5) – 3
= 0.5 + 0.5 – 3
= -2

E. Generalization
A function f is defined by y = f(x), then x is called the independent
variable. Any element of the domain can be chosen as a value of the
independent variable. The resulting value determines the
corresponding value of the dependent variable y.
The value of the dependent variable y = f(x) that corresponds to a
specific value of an independent variable x is found by substituting x into
the function rule, then, simplifying the resulting expression. This process
is called Evaluating a Function.
The rule in evaluating a function is to replace every x in the
function rule f(x) with the given value, then simplify the resulting
numerical expression.

Page | 9
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
In finding the difference quotient of a function we need to remember

the formula . In adding, subtracting, multiplying and

dividing functions, we also need to remember and apply the rules to
come up with the right derivative of a function.
F. Evaluation
Solve the following:
1. Addition: 1.a. x2+2x+3
a. f(x) = 2x+3 and g(x) = x2
b. 8x-1
b. v(x)=5x+1, w(x) = 3x-2
2. Subtraction:
a. f(x) = 2x+3 and g(x) = x2 2.a. -x2+2x+3
b. v(x)=5x+1, w(x) = 3x-2
b. 2x+3

IV. Homework:
Teacher’s Activity Students Activity
Solve the following:
1. f(x) = 3x f(8) = 3 × 8 = 24
g(x) = 5x+2 g(2) = 5 ×2 +2 = 12
What is f(8) ÷ g(2) ? f(8) ÷ g(2) = 24 ÷ 12 = 2

2. j(x) = 5x j(7) = 35
p(x) =x+1 p(4) =5
Evaluate j(7) ÷ p(4) j(7) ÷ p(4) =35 ÷ 5 =7

3. f(x) = 3x+2 f(4) = 3(4) +2 =14

k(x) = 5x+1
k(2) = 5(2) +1 =11
Evaluate f(4)⋅k(2) f(4) ⋅ k(2) = 14⋅11 = 154

4.

𝑓(𝑥) =
𝑔(𝑥) =

5.
𝑓(𝑥) = 2 + 3𝑥 − 𝑥 2
𝑔(𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 1
