Given
L = 10 x 10-3 m
Thf = 90 OC
k = 50 W/m OC
hhf = 2800 W/m2 OC
hcf = 11 W/m2 OC
Tcf = 20 OC
Sol’n.
RT = R1 + R2 +R3
2.) A steel tube with 5 cm ID, 7.6 cm OD and k=15W/mOC is covered with an insulative
covering of thickness 2 cm and k 0.2 W/m OC. A hot gas at 330 OC with h = 400 W/m2OC
flows inside the tube. The outer surface of the insulation is exposed to cooler air at 30OC
with h = 60 W/m2OC. Calculate the heat loss from the tube to the air for 10 m of the tube.
Given:
Inner radius, r1 = 0.025 m
Outer radius, r2 = 0.038 m
r3 = 0.058 m
Thermal conductivity of steel, k1=15W/m OC
Thermal conductivity of insulation, k2 = 0.2 W/m OC.
Thf = 330 OC
Tcf = 30 OC
Hhf = 400 W/m2 OC
Hcf = 60 W/m2 OC.
L = 10 m
Solution:
Q = Thf – Tcf / RT
RT = 0.04 OC/W
Q = (330 – 30) / 0.04
Q = 7500 W
3.) The wall of a building is a composite consisting of a 100-mm layer of common brick, a
100-mm layer of glass fiber(paper faced. 28kg/m2 ), a 10-mm layer of gypsum plaster
(vermiculite), and a 6-mm layer of pine panel. If the inside convection coefficient is 10W/m2.OK
and the outside convection coefficient is 70W/m2.OK, what is the total resistance?
a.) 3.30 m2.OK / W b.) 2.11 m2.OK / W c.) 2.93 m2.OK / W * d.) 3.45 m2.OK / W
Properties:
T= 300K: Brick, kbrick=1.3 W/m.OK : Glass fiber (28kg/m3 ), kglass= 0.038W/m.OK: Gypsum,
kgypsum=0.17W/m.OK: pine panel, kpine=0.12W/m.OK.
Given:
L1 = 0.1 m kbrick=1.3 W/m.OK hc = 10W/m2.OK
L2 = 0.1 m kglass= 0.038W/m.OK hh = 70W/m2.OK
L3 = 0.01 m kgypsum=0.17W/m.OK
L4 = 6x10-3 kpine=0.12W/m.OK
Solution:
RT = 1/hc + L1/ kbrick + L2/ kglass + L3/ kgypsum + L4/ kpine + 1/hh
RT =2.93 m2.OK / W
