DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title: Patterns in Cursive

Grade Level: 4th

S & S Statements:
In this lesson, the students will be using their skills that they are currently acquiring through learning
cursive to help create a continuous line. This continuous line will create forms that will each be filled
with a different pattern. This will be an introduction to creating different patterns by using repeated lines
and shapes.

Concepts and Skills

The concepts learned through this lesson will include how continuous line can create form, and how to
fill that form with different types of patterns to make the image more interesting to look at.

Academic Language:
Pattern, Line, Shape, Form, Continuous Line

Purpose of Lesson:
The purpose of this lesson is to show the students how to use continuous line to create forms and how
to use different patterns to create a more interesting image.

Learning Objectives:

Technical: Given a presentation on patterns and how continuous line can be used to create images,
students will successfully create Multiple patterns using repetitive line and shape.

Conceptual: After the students write out their name and draw a continuous line through the paper
they will be given a presentation on patterns, and use construction paper, markers, pencil, and
colored pencils to create patterns to visually enhance their final artwork

Assessment Criteria:
Effectively create forms with a continuous line, and creatively used pattern to enhance the image..

Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson:

Examples of continuous line, as well as examples of different patterns (powerpoint), smartboard,
example of project completed, examples of step-by-step process (powerpoint).

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson:

(1) Colored 8.5x11” piece of construction paper, (1) marker of student’s choosing (not yellow, different
from paper color), (1) pencil, (1) erasure, and colored pencils

I will let the students work until the end of class. If

making patterns on a separate piece of paper. If they
do not finish, I will have them try to complete it before

will have them clean up their stations.

Critical Comments and Reflections:

In this lesson, I was the main teacher while Mr. Hernandez was my assistant. I think that the lesson
went well in terms of informing the students and letting them know what to do and how to do it. The
students in the majority seemed to understand how I wanted them to create the project, with some
needing a little bit of clarification on some things. The part I struggled the most with during the class
was classroom management. The children were well-behaved during the presentation, however, during
work time they became a bit more chaotic in terms of talking and distracting each other. It became
difficult to be conscious of who was talking, who was working, and who needed my help. Next time, I
will better organize how the materials are dispersed so students don’t keep getting out of their seats to
get more supplies and get distracted. I also need to be more firm with the students when it comes to
getting them to stay on task. Overall, I think the lesson went well.
