Artifact Description: Celebrity gossip newspaper created using Microsoft Word.
What you learned: Wow! I honestly thought this project would be less time consuming
considering that the labor was done by everyone. I thought that having the stories done on
Wednesday would make this project a quick breeze, but I was very wrong. Out of all the projects
we have had so far, this one was the most time consuming. I learned the many different tools that
Word offers, and what can be done to make a creative project. I honestly love the outcome of my
newspaper! I was intimidated at first coming into this project, but with a bit of patience, I was
able to figure out how to make a decent looking newspaper! The stories were funny, and it was
fun to make fictional stories about real people and characters. During this project, I edited some
photos to make them look more believable to my story. I had to find a mugshot of Betty White
(who plays Rose Nylund) and edited it to make it look like it went with the story that was
written. It was easy to use Paint, and just put text over it. I also did the same thing with The
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air picture to make it look like “The Fresh Prince of Jersey Shore.” Writing
a fictional story about a celebrity in a classic TV show was the easy part of all of this. It was
funny to write, and a great way to get the creativity onto paper. Text boxes were probably the
most important part of my layout. They made it easier for me to adjust some pictures since Word
is kind of finnicky with images. I also was able to make some decent looking columns with
them! The text wrap feature was such a life saver as well. I was stressing about the formatting of
some of the text until I used the handy tool. After using text wrap, everything came together
smoothly! I designed my newspaper to be kind of a parody on the New York Times by using the
Old English Font, and of course the title, The Tittle-Tattle Times. While this was a time-
consuming and thought-out project, I had a bunch of fun with it. Once again, I’m learning that
homework can be fun and creative.
National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS) Addressed: Knowledge
Constructor: 3c: Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and
methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or
conclusions.
Application of Skills Learned for the Future: A newspaper project would be awesome in a
classroom! The great thing about the newspaper project is that as an editor, you can choose what
kind of content you want on the newspaper. It’s a great way to help students learn about a
challenging topic considering that they have to do the research, find pictures and put genuine
thought into the project. The quote, “I teach concepts, not keystrokes” heavily applies to this
project. While I was doing the intended subject matter for this project, I was able to read other
people’s creativity and I can only imagine how great their newspapers turned out! This is yet
another awesome way to get familiarized with all the wonderful tools that word processors have
to offer, aside from the traditional essay writing. I never knew about these tools, so I wonder how
many students just need a point in the right direction? I would love to have my future students do
something like this with current scientific events or science concepts that interest them. This
would be a great annual project to show knowledge of subject matter and of course meeting
technology requirements.
