UPCOMING EVENTS

Academic Culture Assembly Presents An Evening with Bill Nye the Science Guy
Tuesday November 16
7:30pm-9:30pm, Bovard Auditorium

Admit it, everything you know about science can be traced back to one man: Bill Nye the Science Guy.
He made science cool with his underground lab and showed you how to build a hovercraft with bal-
loons and a piece of cardboard. Above all, he made science approachable and understandable. You
thought all was lost when you left middle school. Now he’s back!

Dr. Bill Nye will be speaking at USC about his experience on the show and his view on science educa-
tion on in Bovard Auditorium. Come out and listen to one of the greatest teachers of our time. Doors
open at 7:00pm. FREE ADMISSION.

And don’t forget to brush up on that catchy theme song.

Presented to you by USC Program Board, Academic Culture Assembly and Speakers Committee

§ Winter Break Delegation to Nicaragua

The Winter Break Delegation to Nicaragua is an opportunity

for students to learn from grassroots organizations in Nicara-
gua working for social justice.

The trip focuses on women’s rights and immigration, but ad-

dresses a range of social issues including poverty, free trade vs.
fair trade, and US-Nicaragua relations. Students will meet with community leaders and or-
ganizers in Nicaragua. Preparations for the trip will include meeting a few times with other
students participating in the trip to read and discuss the history of Nicaragua from pre-
colonial times to present day, paying particular attention to the Sandinista revolution of the
1970s, the subsequent Contra War, and the current political situation in Nicaragua. We will
also discuss gender issues and the status minority ethnic groups in Nicaragua. Students will
be prepared to engage with the Nicaraguan activists, politicians, and residents we encoun-
ter on the trip.

This trip is unique in that it is not a volunteer trip. The goal is to learn from Nicaraguans
working for justice. The dates of the trip are January 1 to January 8, 2010. The approximate
price for this trip is $1500. This includes flights, housing, food, and transportation on the
trip. We will fundraise as a group to reduce that price.
