Assignment 5 | Due Date: 02-12-2016 | 1700 HRS (Friday)

Problem 1:

A magnetic circuit is made of mild steel arranged in Fig. 1. The center limb is wound with 500 turns and a
cross-sectional area of 800mm2. Each of the outer limbs has a cross-sectional area of 500 mm2. The air gap has
a length of 1mm. Calculate the current required to set up the flux of 1.3mWb in the center limb assuming no
magnetic leakage and fringing. The mean lengths of various magnetic paths are shown on the diagram (Use
the given B-H curve). [30 Marks]

Problem 2:

Fig. 2 shows toroidal core that we have pulled out of our parts bin and want to make an inductor from. The
toroid has dimensions Ri=13 cm, Ro=15 cm and D=2 cm. The permeability of the material is μ = 1400 μo and the
material saturates when the B field inside it reaches 1.8 T. [30 Marks]
a) How many turns (N) should you wrap around the core to make an inductor with L = 2mH?
b) How much current can your inductor carry before the core saturates?
c) How much magnetic energy is your inductor storing when the current is at the point of saturating the
core material?

Assignment 5 | Due Date: 02-12-2016 | 1700 HRS (Friday)

Noting it takes relatively little current to saturate this core, we might want to try to increase the capacity by
“gaping” the core, as shown in Fig. 3 meaning cutting an air-gap as shown in Fig. 2. This gap is to have a
dimension of 3mm and will be filled with, of course, air.

d) Draw a magnetic circuit diagram for this saturation?

e) How many turns must you now wind on the toroid to make the inductance be L = 2mH?
f) How much current can this second inductor carry before the core saturates?
g) How much energy does it store at the time of saturation?

Problem 3:

One way of modelling non ideal transformer is modelling a “magnetizing inductance” in parallel with primary
or secondary windings. This question will help you to explore why the real transformer doesn’t work with DC
voltages. [40 Marks]

Consider the circuit shown in above figure. A DC load, modelled by a resistor is connected to a sinusoidal
voltage source by a transformer with N1 primary and N2 secondary model.

The mean path length of transformer is known to be 40 cm. The cross-sectional area of the core is 25 cm. N1 =
100 turns and N2/N1=2. The peak voltage of the voltage source is 315 V. Assume the value of RL to be 100
ohms.

a) Assume the value of magnetizing inductance (Lmag) to be 2H. Find the value of μR.
b) The value of BSAT is known to be 1.5 T. Plot the B-H curve for this core ignoring hysteresis.
c) Determine the lowest frequency at which this transformer can operate without saturating the core.
