Individual Practice with Peer Evaluation

1. What are the arguments of the article in the Official diary (DOF)?

 The high consumption of sugar-added beverages contributes heavily

to the development of obesity in Mexico.
 It is fundamental to have a State policy to change food consumption
and physical activity patterns of the Mexican society.
 It’s essential to reinforce effective policies and programs for the
prevention of obesity.
 The present initiative proposed by the Mexican congress is
implementing an IEPS tax on sugary beverages.

2. What are the consistencies or inconsistencies that you found in the

document?

In the document I found consistency in the argument that

policies must be implemented in order of battling the ever growing
obesity rate in Mexico. An inconsistency I noticed in the article is the
lack of real research to back up claims and arguments.

3. What are the bias or errors that you found in the arguments (bad
arguments, fallacies, omissions, false inferences and deceptive
statistics)?

An error I found in the articles arguments is the lack of

statistics. I feel the same argument is repeated throughout the article
with no real scientific statistics to back up the claims. The article aims
to make you believe that the sole reason for Mexico’s obesity problem
is strictly sugary beverages.

4. Can conclusions be derived from the arguments?

The only conclusion I derived from the articles arguments is
that Mexico is suffering an obesity problem. There isn’t really a
conclusion derived from the arguments of sugary beverages being a
main cause. In order of deriving conclusions for this I would need
more detailed information that clearly depicts that sugary beverages
are a main cause for Mexico’s obesity problem.

5. Does the point of view of the document is derived from research?

The article’s point of view is not derived from research. There

isn’t any information in the article based on scientific research, facts
or statistics. The article simply makes a claim without demonstrating
researched information.

6. In which way are you ordering your own arguments to avoid being
disperse?
I am ordering my own arguments based on the comparison done with
the data reviewed previously with the critical thinking applied during
the MOOC
