PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Discussion

Photosynthesis is the process by which

autotrophic organisms use light energy to
make sugar and oxygen gas from carbon
dioxide and water.
Where does photosynthesis occur?
Leaf Chloroplast Thylakoid Stroma

Photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts

1. In most plants, photosynthesis occurs primarily in the leaves, in the
chloroplasts
2. A chloroplast contains:
a. stroma, a fluid
b. grana, stacks of thylakoids
3. The thylakoids contain chlorophyll
a. Chlorophyll is the green pigment that captures light for
photosynthesis

There are two processes involved in photosynthesis.

LIGHT-DEPENDENT REACTION
LIGHT INDEPENDENT REACTION (Calvin Cycle)

The Light Reactions

1 . Light dependent
2. Occur in the thylakoid
membrane of chloroplast
3. Water is split into oxygen
gas (O2) and H+
4. Use light energy (photons)
to generate two chemical
energy compounds: ATP &
NADPH

What is the role of ATP and NADPH

in photosynthesis?
ATP provides the free energy to power the Calvin Cycle (a.k.a. the Dark reactions).
NADPH is the key electron donor (reducing agent). This provides the hydrogen and
electrons needed to combine carbon dioxide into carbohydrate molecules.

The“Dark” or Carbon Reactions

4. Light independent (can occur in
light or dark; some enzymes require
activation by light)
5. Occur in the stroma of
chloroplasts
6. Use the chemical energy
produced in Light Reactions (ATP;
NADPH) to reduce CO2 to
carbohydrate (sugar).
7. CO2 is converted to sugar by
entering the Calvin Cycle
1. CO2 enters the Calvin Cycle
2. First product is a 3-carbon molecule: 3-PGA (phosphoglyceric acid).
That’s why it’s also called C-3 cycle.
3. Enzyme RUBISCO (ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) is
the main enzyme that catalyzes the first reactions of the Calvin Cycle.
4. RUBISCO: Is the most abundant protein on earth!
WHY ARE PLANTS GREEN?

Chlorophyll a: (Green)This
is the most abundant pigment
in plants. Chlorophyll a
absorbs light with
wavelengths of 430nm(blue)
and 662nm(red). It reflects
green light strongly so it
appears green to us.
Chl orophyll b: (Green)
This molecule has a structure
similar to that of chlorophyll
a. It absorbs light of 453nm
and 642 nm maximally. It is
not as abundant as
chlorophyll a, and probably
evolved later. It helps increase the range of light a plant can use for energy.
Carotenoids: (Orange)This is a class of accessory pigments that occur in all
photosynthetic organisms. Carotenoids absorb light maximally between 460
nm and 550 nm and appear red, orange, or yellow to us.
Xanthophyll: (Yellow)These are the yellow pigment of the leaves and are
classified as accessory pigments which absorbs the wavelength that
chlorophyll cannot absorb. They serve as protection to excessive amount of
sunlight to prevent further damage in the plant.

4.4 Abstraction

Summary—Light Dependent Reactions

Overall input
light energy, H2O.
Overall output
ATP, NADPH, O2.
Summary—Light Independent Reactions
Overall input
CO2, ATP, NADPH.
Overall output
glucose.
(Video presentation)
4.5 Application (By Group Performance)
Put the cut-out part name of the leaves (internal) into where it is located.
Compare and contrast the light-dependent reaction and the Calvin cycle using
Venn diagram.
Design a Photosynthesis Model through the use of the chips and other cut-outs
and describe the process of light reaction and Calvin Cycle.
4.6 Assessment Directions: Answer the following. Choose the letter of your answer and write
it on a ¼ sheet of paper.
1. What are the by-product of light-dependent reaction?
2. What is the chemical formula for glucose?
3. Why most plants are green?
4. What is the full formula for photosynthesis?
5. Where does the Calvin cycle takes place?

4.7 Assignment Study about Cellular Respiration

4.8 Concluding Activity WHY IS PHOTOSYNTHESIS SO IMPORTANT?
PHOTOSYNTHESIS is one of the most important biological process on earth!

Write your ideas in a ½ crosswise paper.

Answers:
Provides the oxygen we breathe
Consumes much of the CO2
Food
Energy
Fibers and materials
