MARKS
2. Introduction This experiment is

3. Objective 1. To calculate the number of mole water in barium

chloride hydrate using percent composition
concept and the atomic mass.
2. To identify the unknown hydrated salt
(Compound A).

4. Apparatus crucible and lid, clay triangle, tripod stand, Bunsen

burner, crucible tongs and white tile.

5. Chemicals 6 M HNO3, 1 M HCl, barium chloride hydrate

(BaCl2.xH2O) and Compound A.
(Compound A can be any of the following:
LiSO4.H2O, MgSO4.7H2O, FeSO4.7H2O, SrCl2.6H2O or
CaSO4.2H2O)

6. Procedures 1. Crucible and lid obtained. Crucible cleaned and

any stress cracks, fractures and fissures checked
before used (if the crucible is dirty, the apparatus
moved to hood and 1-2mL of 6M HNO3 added
and evaporated to dryness gently then the
crucible inspected after cooling for any defects.
The crucible and lid should be supported on a
clay triangle if n defects are founded).
2. Initial mass of the crucible and lid recorded.
3. Crucible was heated gently for five minutes
before heating with an intense flame. Heating
continued for two to three minutes with an
intense flame until the bottom of the crucible
becomes red. The crucible allowed to cool on the
clay triangle before proceeding with the
experiments.
4. The mass of the ‘fired’ cool crucible and lid
recorded. Step 2 was repeated until two crucible
and lid mass reading differ by no more than
10mg or 0.010g.
5. Between 1.5 and 2.0g of hydrated salt added to
the crucible and the combined mass of the
crucible, lid and salt recorded.
6. The crucible with the sample placed on the clay
triangle and the crucible lid was removed to
allow the evolving water molecules to escae
during heating.
7. The sample slowly and gradually heated by
intensifying the heat. The sample drastically
heated at a high temperature for 10 minutes. The
crucible covered once removed from heat and
allowed to cool at room temperature in
desiccator. The mass of the crucible, lid and
anhydrous salt recorded sing the same balance as
used in the earlier step.
8. The sample reheated for an additional two
minutes with medium or high heat. Combined
mass of the crucible, lid and anhydrous salt
weighed and continued repeating this process
until two concurrent readings within 10mg of
each other were obtained.
