1. TITLE. PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND SUNLIGHT

2. AIM / HYPOTHESIS
Create a research question based on the GRASP task..
Where can photosynthesis happen? Can it happen in a dark area?

Answer the research question through a testable hypothesis.

Photosynthesis stops when there is no light. So you can say that photosynthesis can not
happen in a dark area because the chlorophyll won’t able to absorb the light to energy. But,
the plant still continues day and night. It is just the photosynthesis that can not occur during
night.

3. VARIABLES: Be clear to define exactly what you are controlling and measuring.
Independent: Light dark area

Dependent: starches and photosynthesis

4. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Complement the background information including the following elements:

Definition of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a process of how plants make their

own food inside leaves. It occurs inside palisade cells, (inside) chloroplasts. In order to
occur photosynthesis, you need a substance called chlorophyLL. This chlorophyLL is
inside the chloroplast and it is very important to absorb the light. When chlorophyLL
absorb their light, the light will mix with the water, and carbon dioxide. When they mix
together, it will produce this food called Glucose. Glucose is a sugar-like food that can
feed the plants.

Photosynthesis word equation. Carbon dioxide+ sunlight + ChlorophyLL+ water

Importance of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is very important for plants because

photosynthesis produces glucose. Glucose is also important substance for the process
of respiration.

Definition of respiration. Respiration is a process that occurs inside

mitochondria that uses oxygen and glucose to produce carbon dioxid

Respiration word equation. glucose + oxygen

Relationship between photosynthesis and cell respiration. Photosynthesis

produces glucose and respiration requires glucose to produce water and carbon
dioxide. So you can say that respiration needs photosynthesis to produce
carbon dioxide and water.

Relationship of photosynthesis and light. The substance inside chloroplast

ChlorophyLL, is specialized in absorbing light to produce glucose. But if there
are no light, ChlorophyLL can not absorb the light and photosynthesis will not
work.

The importance of chlorophyll for plants. chlorophyll absorbs light to produce

glucose for plants. Foods are very important for plants because, plants will die
without food.

Photosynthesis and starches production.

Photosynthesis does not form starch directly. However, it does form simple sugars,
which are quickly converted to starch in other reactions.

Glucose Starch

So the production of starch in a leaf can be used as evidence of photosynthesis.

The starch test uses iodine solution, which changes from orange-yellow to blue-black
in the presence of starch. Before testing a leaf for starch, it’s necessary to remove the
green colour of chlorophyll and the waxy cuticle, so that the iodine solution can
penetrate the cells of the leaf.

5. REQUIREMENTS
ethanol kettle of boiling water leaf
water bath at 80 °C with boiling-tube rack marker pen forceps
iodine solution in dropper bottle large beaker boiling tube
glass rod Petri dish white tile
eye protection

6. SAFETY
Read the method carefully and follow the instructions.
Be careful with the stove.

1. METHOD
Procedure: 1. Get samples of different foods and put them on the glass.
2. Get iodine and put 1 drop on top of the food.
3. Take photo of the reaction.

My experiment
0. Put the plant in the dark area for 3 days.
0.1 take it out and one of them with black paper.
0.2 Leave it out in the sun for a few hours

1. Put on eye protection.

2. Pour boiling water into a large beaker.
3. Pick up the leaf by the stalk with the forceps and hold it in the water for about a minute.
4. Remove the leaf from the water with the forceps and place it in a boiling tube. Push the leaf to the bottom of
the tube with the glass rod. Label the tube with your initials.
5. Pour enough ethanol into the tube to cover the leaf. Place the tube into the tube rack in the water bath. The
ethanol will boil and remove the chlorophyll.
6. Check the leaf after a few minutes. If there is still green chlorophyll in the leaf, replace the tube for a few
more minutes.
7. When the leaf has lost all green colour, use forceps to remove the leaf from the tube and rinse it in cold
water.
8. Place the leaf on a white tile and place drops of iodine solution to cover the leaf.
9. Where there is any starch in the leaf, a blue-black colour will form.

include the described method in your own experimental methodology remember to create a way to
measure the results as well as a way to control the variables.

7. RESULTS ( QUALITATIVE / QUANTITATIVE)

A. Describe and include pictures of the experiment’s result.

-The Chips were all turned to black because they had starches. (The chips do have some photosynthesis
working around)
-The mentos and other sweets did not turned to black because they did not have starches. (Sweets do
not have photosynthesis going on)

- The cookies turned to black because they had starches

-The leaf turned black because the leaf had some photosynthesis going around to create starches.
10. ANALYSIS
1. Explain fully why a leaf turns blue-black after using this method. What does this evidence mean?

This clearly means that the plant was doing photosynthesis. This plant had the Chlorophyll absorbing
the very well and sending them to produce glucose. Then, glucose mixes together and come up with a
substance called starches. The leaf turns blue-black because the leaf had photosynthesis and the leaf
had glucose.

2. A plant is left in a dark cupboard for 2days. What color would you expect to see after one of its leaves
is tested with iodine solution, yellow-orange or blue-black? Explain your answer.

Yellow or orange because this shows that the chlorophyll couldn’t absorb the sunlight which makes the
plant won't be able to produce glucose to make starches. Photosynthesis is depending on sunlight and
without the sunlight, photosynthesis will stop. Also, chlorophyll absorb the sunlight but then the
problem is that the plant was left in a dark cupboard for 2 days. So, chlorophyll can not absorb sunlight
which affects the rest of the progress to produce starches.

3. Suggest why a plant should be left in a dark cupboard for 2 days before carrying out experiments on
photosynthesis.

It is a simple knowledge that everyone should know. Plant should be left in a dark cupboard for days because
when the plant is left in a dark area, the photosynthesis stops. This means that the main substance chlorophyll
couldn’t absorb the sunlight to make starches. It should be left out to prove that the plant do need sunlight to
make&occur starches and photosynthesis.

1. CONCLUSION
Draw one conclusion for the experiment.

2. EVALUATION AND IMPROVEMENT

A. State at least one thing in the method that could reduce the accuracy, or the
reliability of the experiment.
B. Suggest changes in the method that can improve the accuracy, or the
reliability of the experiment.
