Instructions (Yes reading them is required)

1. Do all the questions. There are 5 questions in this exam

2. Write your answers on the question paper. All working should be shown on the exam
paper. If you want extra paper for your working, please ask
3. The weightage of the exam is 20%

4. You must not start answering the questions before 08:35

5. It is mandatory that you use the given empty space first for each question. If extra space
is required, continue your working at the back of the booklet, and make sure that you
mention the page number near the question
6. Mark distribution is as follows:

Questions

1. You are given three planes in four dimensional space of the form u + v + w + z = 6, u + w + z = 4,
and u + w = 2

(a) Write the given problem in form A~x = ~b (3 marks)

(b) Describe the intersection of three planes (3 marks)

(c) Find a fourth equation that leaves us with no solution (2 marks)

(d) What happens if the fourth plane u = 1 is included? (2 marks)

2. Write down the 3 by 3 matrices that produce these elimination steps:

• E21 subtracts 5 times row 1 from row 2 (2 marks)

• E31 subtracts -3 times row 1 from row 2 (2 marks)

• E32 subtracts 7 times row 2 from row 3 (2 marks)

• P exchanges rows 1 and 2, then rows 2 and 3 (2 marks)

Write down a possible matrix A such that when we apply the above elementary matrices
E32 , E31 , E21 , we get an upper triangular matrix U i.e. E32 E31 E21 A = U (4 marks)
